Hi there,

Our helpdedk is clear and our normal daily tasks will be complete by 10am do after that we basically have very little to do!

Anyone got any suggestions of what we can get our teeth stuck into? Serious or fun I don't care!!!

Don't believe you! The users will arrive by 9am and throw a spanner in the works!

Documentation... there is always documentation that needs dojng

Planning... it's OK now, but where should the network be in 1, 2 and 3 years time. What could help to improve the way things are done and overall results?

Lol. We had our short, medium and long term plans reviewed and agreed only last week.

However, there is some documentation that needs updating I suppose.

This is all because we had a very productive summer where we managed to get ahead of ourselves by quite a bit.

Documentation or CPD. There should always be something to do in those areas...

Have you got a super-duper colour-coded network diagram? Is every single ethernet cable and port labelled? Are your shelves and storage areas tidy?

And have you really cleared out your office? Is it all nice and tidy and have you had an honesty session about how much of that stuff is actually likely to ever be useful?! ;)

All stuff we put off doing, but...

How's your monitoring? Maybe installing and configuring Nagios would be a good use of your time?

Rancid to monitor and backup switch configs?

Inventory system? I'm a big fan of lansweeper

All things that you should get benefit from but not impact anyone else.

I have job for you here.

Take what I affectionately refer to as "The Whoopin' Stick" around the classrooms after PM reg and make sure all the staff have logged out of SIMS before I start the upgrade.

You will required a good line in menacing states and effective patting-the-stick-in-your-hand-ology.

Do your kids not require spoon feeding, staff know everything about IT and admin users know how to unjam a printer?

Where is this school?

Read the new National Curriculum - Primary pupils will need to know/learn what algorithms are (and that's just for starters). Forget about getting English and Maths right!

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I have now started to go over the network diagrams again to make sure all is up to date.

Also, I have been having a butchers at some monitoring for the. LAN as one of the things I'm fighting for next is to get our mixed bag of switches replaced!

DR Plan

DR Tests

Redundacny Plan

check all network devices NTP , PWD, email, syslog, etc are configured.

Probably much more, our helpdesk trots along between 450-550 open tickets between the four of us.

We take and clear ~200 a week, although the first 3 weeks of term were closer to 300!

we have lots of projects on the burners to keep us busy for years.
