Recommendations for connecting to another school remotely

Hi all,

I may be soon taking on another school and I'm looking for the best way to connect to that school remotley. I need to be able to remote desktop user's machines and the Domain Controller. Years ago I did this at my current school using a VPN but only using PPTP on the DC (I got told that having the DC as the VPN server was not the greatest idea in terms of security so stopped after a few weeks).

 

Any advice would be great, I'm open to suggestions for VPN or using an online service such as LogMeIn etc

You could set up a VPN with the school's firewall and you would effectively be on the network. Alternatively, a Remote Desktop Gateway could help. Maybe the school already has a remote access solution you could leverage?

I would use Teamviewer into the main servers then use AB tutor console on one of the servers to connect to all the schools PC's. A safe and simple solution, just make sure you do the regular security checks/ password policies ect.

I go along same lines, but have a look around at software and find one that suits

 

I use Teamviewer on a personal level and cant fault it for that.

I used to use NoMachine FreeNX server at the school, from that using RDP to the clients. Worked very well and that was 5 years ago.

Create a VPN between the 2 schools and then just use what ever you use to control your desktops, VNC or what every it may be. Will be like they are on the same LAN just different IP to connect to.

+1 for VPN, we use openVPN with PfSense boxes at either side.

If it isn't already deployed, CentraStage is pretty cheap. Would allow you to provide the remote support but also give you a host of other functionality.

Team viewer would cost £439 for a connection for that price there is no real set up hassle and inbuilt sercurity.

Teamviewer is a good option, not too expensive and fairly secure.

 

I use hardware routers with IPSec VPN between office locations so all of the office networks can see each other. Works quite well, and if you have routers or equipment with VPN available, it's just a little effort to configure.

 

Using software VPN is also possibly, there are a number of VPN servers and VPN clients, though the cost of the full suite of software would cost more than buying the equivalent hardware.
