I just thought I would post this up for those of you who may have not seen the recent update, but on the 29th August Microsoft announced that they will be doubling the mailbox storage limit to 50GB!

 

You don't need to do anything to take advantage of this new mailbox size. Your mailbox size will automatically be increased. The increase starts rolling out to customers today and continues through November.

 

This increase to a 50 GB mailbox per user benefits Exchange Online and Office 365 service plans, including: Exchange Online Plan 1, Office 365 Small Business, Midsize Business, Enterprise E1, Government G1, and Education A1. If you have one of our premium service plans (Exchange Online Plan 2, Office 365 Enterprise E3 and E4, Government G3 and G4, Education A3 and A4), you already enjoy unlimited email storage through your personal archive, but now your default primary mailbox size is increasing to 50 GB. Kiosk user mailboxes are doubling in size, too-from 1 GB to 2 GB.

 

In addition to doubling the storage in your users' primary mailbox, we've increased the size of other mailboxes to help you work even more productively. Shared mailboxes and Resources mailboxes are both increasing to 10 GB (more than doubling), so you'll have plenty of room to store everything you need for your projects and collaborations. The size of Site mailboxes remains unchanged.

Well I am using Google apps and have had far less downtime than our own exchange I always found exchange to need a constant nursemaid. Edited by nicholab

Why in a school would you run a mail server now?

 

When you are unable to get redundant / reliable internet connections and given probably 90% of email is internal if not more it makes sense to have it in-house. (yes we were bitten by a cloud email from the LA was ~3 years of chaos and removed it for in-house exchange and problems all went away and exchange is a good tool and looks after itself usually)

The "cloud" does not mean you lose your job, not usually. I used to hear that a lot a few years ago.

 

"Cloud" services don't run themselves. Granted, whoever provides the services keeps the lights on, the power running, the patches patched and the air con cool, but ultimately you'll still need to keep your skills in managing these services* up to date. You can't just "set and forget". Not for very long at least. :)

 

*You just might need different skills of course...

 

If I'd had the chance to ditch my (super capable but ultimately time consuming) Exchange org in favour of letting someone else do the hard work so that I could focus on other more important things I'd have been all over it!

Just a shame their 2013 webmail update is so awful!!

 

Why in a school would you run a mail server now?

 

Change Management, basically Microsoft forcing Office 365 users to upgrade when they might not want to.

I must have been missing something with the Exchange boxes I have run in the past as I have never ever found them time-consuming or problematic. I must be missing something with them but I've never had any issues!

Is there anyway to delay the 2013 upgrade?

 

I've already delayed it 4 weeks, but there is no option on the most recent email about the "automatic" upgrade

 

Our staff are just getting used to the 2010 version :/

To keep your skill set in exchange up to date. Most of the schools sector may be running office 365, but most of the private sector are not. You have to keep your skill set alive.

This is the sort of self-centred approach that causes entire school ICT systems to be outsourced.

Thanks, I would recommend Office 365 to anyone, in fact I think running a local exchange server is crazy in this day and age :)

 

But I finally see the disadvantage of the cloud, sometimes you don't want the latest upgrades...

That's the major positive, or negative, about moving to the cloud though (with almost any provider, not just Microsoft).

 

Over time I'd expect the notion of an upgrade (in a majorly disruptive sense) to become a bit passé, and things will just evolve.

Cheers - its because I have to show all my new students email and I can see the confusion in their faces already when they login a week later to discover its not the same!
