Microsoft, in recent months, has undergone one of the biggest restructures in its life as the Seattle-based company attempts to shake off the fact that it is still best known for selling shrink-wrapped packages of software.The hunt is now on for a replacement and Microsoft said a special committee would direct the transition from Ballmerism.

Microsoft shares are already up nearly 9 per cent as this article is published following the announcement. ®

Not surprised. Their overall strategies have been disjointed and confusing since he took over. Just look at the Xbox One stuff!

 

Their mobile strategy has been useless too.

 

I hope they get someone with an actual vision for the company in to replace him. Someone who understands the need for strong enterprise software income, as well as consumer products.

Has anyone else noticed the irony in the fact that clicking on a button to bring up a home screen on a phone is basically the same as clicking on the Start button on Windows < 8 ? And yet this is precisly what they ditched on the desktop?

Microsoft needs 'vision' IMO. What they have had for the past 13 years is 'management'. Apple had vision under Jobs, but I think it's still to early to tell whether they will succumb to management again as happened after they ousted Jobs back in the 80's.

That said, Microsoft still did a few good things since Ballmer took the reigns in 2000 (remembering Gates did not fully leave until 2008), but you could still feel the hand of Gates behind them.

It will be interesting times ahead, and just who steps up to take control will be a subject of great speculation over the coming months. And I can't even begin to guess.

Oh, I won't deny that the use experience in windows phone is good but their strategy is non-existent.

I hope his replacement doesn't end up just being like his current second in command getting a leg up, because it's shown that clearly no one currently within his senior staff has an innovative bone between them, including him.
