I need a new email account for personal use as BT are pulling the plug on TALK21.com

Having been a TALK21.com email user for donkeys years, I was dismayed to receive a mere 1 months notice from BT that they are pulling the plug on TALK21.com email accounts unless you pay for their premium email service or switch to BT Broadband.

 

Setting aside any moral issues about the shortness of notice, nor the fact that I am a BT landline user & PlusNet (my current ISP) are owned by BT, and I am not about to switch broadband supplier or pay BT any money for email, which 'free' email provider would you recommend?

Buy a domain and host it with someone for a few quid is my advice, it was the best thing I have done, I change ISP and move around as much as I like and no risk of it not being ready or usable for me, for a few quid a year it is worth looking at IMHO over the other stuff.

Agree with John, you can set it up how you like and most paid hosting services come with a mailserver that requires minimal maintenance to keep going but lets you set it up how you want. Mine is set up as a global inbox so I can use as many throwaway addresses as I want and anyone can contact me by sending a mail to my domain.

 

You also get the bonus of a bit of webspace to tinker with. I suggest CSNewMedia.

I use Gmail for my personal email. It can be link to outlook or thunderbird and even apples mail client. You currently get around 15Gigs of space more than plenty for me.

We moved over to gmail a few years ago as we expected our BT accounts to disappear once we stopped being BT customers. Like you, our accounts will finally go next month. The only thing I use with it is freegle. Now google calendars and gmail organise the family around the world! Edited August 17, 2013 by elsiegee40

I have a talk21 account and had issues with bt over linked accounts but through that I found out that they are mapped to a @btinternet.com address.

 

So [email protected] becomes [email protected]

 

Afaik if you link your bt.com account to talk21 account they wont cut you off.

 

I haven't had an email through about the change in service.

What @john said. I purchased a couple of domain names and use them with Gmail (via Google Apps) and FastMail (who are owned by Opera). Both enable you to create virtual e-mail addresses like [email protected], so you don't have to give out your real e-mail address when signing up for things on the Internet and support IMAP / ActiveSync (among many other things). If you have an Android smartphone or tablet, Gmail is a no brainer.

 

I would avoid the e-mail accounts you get with ISPs and web hosts. They are almost always rubbish.

Is advise against yahoo email stronger than any other provider. Their security record over the last year has been awful.

 

I use gmail personally, but am considering moving it to my own server, and paying for a secondary host somewhere.

As others have said - get your own email domain (mine is with 1&1). I also use Outlook.com, which I have had no issues with.

I have several gmail accounts and my own personal domain with email. They all get forwarded to a single email address that I use with Office365. Had my own personal exchange account for 7 or 8 years now - although not always with Microsoft!

Ive been using gmail for things but recently started using outlook.com which I find is great. Main reason for it is because of moving to windows 8 on my tablet and desktop pc plus laptop.

 

Im going to look into having my own email if I can get one cheap enough.

If you went with FastMail - and assuming Talk21 support IMAP - you could use the "Migrate IMAP Mailbox" feature to quickly transfer all of your e-mail over while keeping the exact same folder structure. You would be up-and-running in less than an hour.
