[fog] HP Compaq Pro 4300 SFF - cant take image

We are having big problems trying to take a fog image from the above system.

 

It has a fresh install of Windows 7

 

Fog keeps reporting more than 2 partitions not valid for this image type.

 

So I investigated using G-parted and there are three partitions

 

 

Non of our other systems running Windows 7 have three partitions

 

is the unknown SDA 2 partition something to do the the UEFI Bios? these are our first systems with UEFI

 

I did use g-parted to remove all the partitions then did a fresh install of Windows 7, Windows would boot but we still could not take a fog image and g-parted reports no partitions.

 

anybody got suggestions on how to fix?

 

We have 42 of these to set up so doing them individually is not an option.

I think this is down to EFI and Secureboot. I don't think fog supports it, as it has only very recently started making an appearance in machines and fog hasn't had an update in a while. Try cross posting this to the fog forums.

 

One of the reasons I switched to SCCM.

There should be a legacy bios mode you can switch to. It worked for me with laptops with UEFI and I managed to upload and deploy W7 images as normal.

If you search for "F10", you should go to the section saying how to disable Secureboot and EFI.

On the relatively small number of machines we have with EFI, I had to disable it to image them with FOG. Not much choice at the moment, still work fine though.

Sort of getting there. The problems we were having with taking an image appears to be down to an old version of Fog, using 0.32 we can take an image.

 

However, restoring the image is presenting a few problems.

Ok I can restore but for some reason fog will not restore the disk unless the partitions are already set up on the destination. So what im having to do is restore the partition information with clonezilla first then fog the machine.

 

Dont understand this at all, the old version of fog(0.29) was perfectly happy with restoring anything regardless of what partions were or were not on the destination disk. If anyone has any thoughts on this I would like to hear them, but for the moment I have a solution I can work with.

Very odd. What type of disk have you chosen to use for your image (single disk etc) in FOG? We use 0.32, it works well on a vast variety of machines but can't work with re-sizeable disks for us.

Whichever imaging software you're using, you need to disable Secure Boot and EFI. Everything will work fine, as is the case with HP and Toshiba (as well as others).

 

Even for admins brave enough to image/deploy Windows 8 with Secure Boot and EFI enabled is creating problems.
