Laptops for Staff implications

Just wondering- how many of you provide a laptop per teacher, and what do you do if and when you have a part time/PPA style teacher.

 

Currently being told that anyone using their 'home' laptop is putting us on dangerous ground in terms of having personal effects and/or sensitive data on there.

All staff here have a laptop or chrome book depending on role. Part timers get them as well just older stock.

All teachers have a school owned laptop here. For supply, we have a bank of 6 laptops, mostly older machines. There is a generic Teacher username for supply teachers to log in with.

all staff that need a laptop have one. If a teacher is on PPA/away then the TA's laptop is used in that class if free. We do have spare laptops that can be used as a last resort. We try to get TA's to use thiers as it means they know how to connect it and show the teacher where everything is. It saves me having to spend 5 minutes in the morning setting up laptops and showing them where things are.

We have them for all teaching/classroom staff. We have a stock of spares for casual/temp users and repair cover, all set up and ready to go. We are currently considering whether this model is sustainable (have done so many times and each time have continued) or to go to having a machine in every class and a few in faculty offices.

We have removal all ours from server. If staff want to work from home they use a personal device connected to an RDS session.

Same here, including TA's. We get them to sign a 'Loan of laptop agreement' / disclaimer that they wont use it for their personal use.

 

Because we use folder redirection on our network they have a network and a local login (otherwise they can't access their work at home without a VPN). They transfer one to the other with encrypted USB sticks. Its a bugger when they want to install their printers etc though. You end up doing it for them or giving them local admin accounts.

 

I'm sure there are better of ways of doing this tho'.

If you want to do it on a budget, we can help you give every teacher one vith varying specs depending on need / time spent in school

We have a laptop per teacher but are now switching to iPads per teacher if they want one (instead of a laptop)

 

We have RDWeb meaning any member of staff can go to our webpage, login with their AD stuff and then use an app as a service (IE using SIMS on the school server although it appears to run as a local app on their machine it's actually a remote desktop instance so uses the school data, school, processor/ram/hardware etc... only the interface is shared with the user). Technically this is possible from any machine running windows 7 or up but in reality we give staff laptops to use at home due to the whole "Well if the school expects me to work at home then the school needs to provide resources so I can do it".

 

We still have machines in classrooms, the laptops are purely for home use or for use in school if/when the teacher doesnt have access to their room/pc/staff room is all in use etc...The reality is that 50% of the laptops hardly ever get used. The laptops are all setup with a TrueCrypt partition, a sign off agreement and instructions.

 

In terms of time invested there's very little we do once we hand them over. The most often "complaint" is a user forgetting their initial logon or accidentally turning the wireless off but it's rare since most of them dont get used anyway.
