Arthur Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 (edited) I would be careful with this offer, they are giving Windows RT machines away at their partner conference as well. Google gave away Chromebook Pixel's at this year's I/O conference (and a Nexus 7, Nexus Q, Galaxy Nexus and Chromebox the previous year). Should I be careful with any of those? Stinks of trying to remove old stock to me, of a failed operating system. What's wrong with that? Other companies do the same. Edited July 9, 2013 by Arthur
synaesthesia Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 Hardly failed is it - and £133 is giving it away. If it will do a good job of something (which it certainly can if you put your mind to it) then nothing really stinks to me.
sparkeh Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 Well yes RT has not gone down too well so yes I am not surprised that they are trying to clear stock, could be in preparation for the big push on Surface Pro aimed at business, coming next month: Surface Pro for enterprise: We name the dates and the lucky partners
pcstru Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 I would be careful with this offer, they are giving windows RT machines away at their partner conference as well. Stinks of trying to remove old stock to me, of a failed operating system. Maybe. Still £133 for an RT is a bargain. They are fine little tablets for browsing and email. That they come with office (albeit, 'student edition) is a huge bonus.

robjduk Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 anyone got theirs yet? They took 3 weeks to tell me as we didn't have a VAT number and to resubmit the order even though as academy we don't have one so here we are at the beginning again. Im quite the Microsoft fanboy most the time but it takes them 3-4 weeks to tell me they cant take the order!
fiza Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Looks like the orders are coming through. Just recieved mine. Did they deliver from what you put in the order or was there another step? We submitted our order and received a confirmation that they would be in touch. Should I expect a delivery then or are there other steps after submitting the order?
Phildw Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Looks like the orders are coming through. Just recieved mine. Just emailed the quote. Got a reply confirming the order and now its turned up. When did you place your order/email the quote?
AngryTechnician Posted August 1, 2013 Author Posted August 1, 2013 (edited) I still haven't had a full confirmation, despite ordering 5 weeks ago and following up a second time a few weeks later as per my earlier post. I never even got any response from that one. I've pretty much given up hope of our order ever arriving at this point. Edited August 1, 2013 by AngryTechnician

SYNACK Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 (edited) Great hardware, alright software and free office, overall a great value proposition only sabotaged by it's lack of management options. Edited August 1, 2013 by SYNACK
robjduk Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 I would say sabotaged by whatever goons are running this promotion to schools. Put in box, post and send a bill really isn't that hard to do.
kearton Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 I emailed Anthony this morning to chase up our order and got this response... From: Anthony Nneke (Brook Street) [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 02 August 2013 09:08 To: Subject: RE: Surface Order Hi, Thanks for letting me know, if you can advise when your order was placed, I will chase up. Apologies for the delay or lack of response you have had from the surface Education team, they are experiencing a high volume of orders and are working on a backlog of orders. If you do speak to respective network managers at Edugeek can you advise them to contact me if they have not had responses like yourself. Kind Regards Anthony Nneke Consultant Internal Schools Business Manager, tel: +44 118 9094 265 [email protected] | schools blog
robjduk Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 emailed him about 3 times in the last 9 days and the responses have dried up. Sadly this division of Microsoft couldn't organise a hardware sale out of a purpose built storage depo. Anyone else seen or heard about their order? I don't even care if they are cancelled, I just want to know. I just have this fear they are going to turn up in September and I will have to pay for them out of next year's budget. They were a nice I have some budget left purchase, not a 1st week of the new budget must have. Trying to stay calm about it but I have had a better customer experience from PayPal (anyone ever had a problem with ebay will know what I mean).
Tall_Paul Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 Ours have turned up out of the blue whilst I was away, so I would imagine yours will be getting there at some point!
pcstru Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 We only ordered a couple, four turned up but only two of the softtouch keyboards.
fiza Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 We emailed our order on 4th July. Got an email back 18th July to say they were reviewing our order but have not heard anything since. Just emailed Anthony Nneke to see what is going on.
Arthur Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 Just received a second unordered one as well! Buy one, get one free?
AngryTechnician Posted August 21, 2013 Author Posted August 21, 2013 Ours turned up a few days ago out of the blue. I never got a proper confirmation email, only the initial "thanks for your interest" email. I did chase it up with Anthony though so that may be why it didn't follow the stated procedure.
gshaw Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 Received ours OK after about 2 weeks, upgraded both to 8.1 Beta and going out to staff soon. My thoughts on the RT - love the form factor but find that outside of MS Office and OneNote I need Win8 Pro, if only MS could make a mid range i3 Surface in the RT form factor I'd be sold for sure
SHimmer45 Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 starting chasing our order as i sent it off 16th july and got the confirmation email that that i had "expressed interest" with the FAQ and that its. ideally id like to phone someone about it but they dont provide any phone numbers......
rpenhale Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 Had an email from Kieran Porter today. [email protected] Tel: +44 118 9095303 . He informs me Microsoft were waiting for new stock in the UK which has now arrived and we should receive our devices in the next week or two.
AngryTechnician Posted August 22, 2013 Author Posted August 22, 2013 I got a shipping confirmation today for the device which arrived on Monday . To be fair it did say "In some cases you may have already received your delivery" but it was amusing nonetheless.
zag Posted August 27, 2013 Posted August 27, 2013 Apparently Microsoft lost 1 Billion dollars in unsold stock of these RT tablets. My guess is you will be holding an expensive paperweight soon Microsoft Surface sales numbers revealed as SHOCKINGLY HIDEOUS Why Teflon Ballmer had to go: He couldn't shift crud from Windows 8, Surface
m25man Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 I'm guessing that dumping these into the UK will allow good old M$ to offset a proportion of the $1bn losses against UK Corporation taxes? I just hope they prove worth it even for that price.
