Internet Speed & Costs

Hi,

 

I work in an International School and I am commencing negotiations with our ISP to try to reduce our internet costs. I am trying to research what other schools are paying for their internet but ISP do not seem to publish this data on their websites.

 

I would be interested in getting any feed back that I could use, such as the cost of the internet and what speed you have signed up for. I appreciate that sometimes the actual speed may vary.

Costs are going to vary massively so you'll probably get a very wide spread of cost / speed.

 

I think we pay £15k or so for 100mb though to get the ball rolling.

We pay approx £10k PA for 100mb connection including a backup ADSL+ connection for redundancy.

 

But as @RTFM mentioned; costs will vary tremendously depending upon your location and the available services and suppliers in your area.

The best you can do is contact several ISPs in your country and then work out the avg for there.

Both were still £k's cheaper in comparison to BT or Virgin Media.

We've got a coverage of about 85% of the UK for between £8,495 to £8,995 for a full 100Mbit using BT based circuits with even better pricing in London.

 

We've also managed to do 100Mbit on 1Gbit bearer on Virgin from £5,995 in certain areas.

 

Beating BT Retail on price is unbelievably easy for us or our friends at M247.

 

It's very rare we're beaten on price for connectivity so do give us a go

Generally speaking no. We have different options available and the cost also changes dependant on if you're a primary or a secondary school.

 

If you're a primary schools I'd recommend FTTC anyway as it will near enough always outperform a 10Mbit leased line and prices for that including content filtering start from £2,600pa.

I don't know if it is a leased line as we had fibre and that was replaced with a pair of copper lines and I remember the BT man talking about SDSL as he installed it. We were paying £10k for the fibre line and now using copper it's dropped to a round £5-6k which includes the filtering and web hosting.

Think we pay under £12k for a 100mb leased line with ADSL failover from M247.

We pay about £11k for a 50 meg leased line with ASDL failover from Eclipse Internet. We are in the final year of a 3 year contract so I expect that cost to fall considerably when we renew or move ISPs.

 

Watch out for other costs that you may incur - installation and maybe the router

yeah this is the big one for us

we are in a very rural area, and its looking like it will cost a few few quid to get it installed.

The thing is we need to start an order to get a quote on install costing!

Yeah, but that is OK. You can pull out at no cost if there are Excess Construction charges. If you have the signoff on a good quote, or we can provide you one, get the order going and then you will know

@wickit i agree with @psillars get a good quote and sign up. Once the survey has been done you can cancel if the installation will be excessive. We are very rural too and feared the install costs but actually wasn't that much more than standard once the survey was done. We also agreed to do certain bits of work ourselves onsite to keep the install costs down.
