Dell XPS Windows 8 RT\Windows 8 Pro

Our Physics department are keen to get hold of some tablets, they are looking at the Dell XPS 10inch (£200ish - Buy Dell XPS 10 Inch Windows 8 RT Tablet at Argos.co.uk - Your Online Shop for Tablets.) however it comes with Windows 8 RT. We are on MS EES so in theory can upgrade to Win8 Pro.

 

•2GB RAM.

•Microsoft Windows 8 RT operating system.

•1.5GHz Qualcomm 8060A processor.

•32GB HDD.

 

 

Does anyone know if this is possible and if the hardware will support 8 pro?

Windows RT devices run ARM CPUs and they can not run Windows 8 Pro.

 

But as said it depends what they want to run and if you have access to remote apps or similar.

^^What he said. This is crititical - they do not run x86 compatible CPUs, and cannot run Windows 8 Pro. They also will not run most of your desktop software - though Office should be included. You can't stick them on the domain, so you have to manage them with other tools too (SCCM etc).

They are hoping to use them for office apps, research etc.

Your price point is a little low for windows 8 Pro tablets. The market is still not very helpful to educational institutions at the moment.

 

I've got some great android options (with bluetooth keyboard stands) for around half your target price. Or some windows 8 Pro options for about double...

you cant add windows rt to a domain and you cant upgrade rt to pro/enterprise. Something like an acer w510 or asus vivotab is more suitable but ive yet to get a vivitab onto anything but win8 std cant get it to usb/micro sd boot

We bought an Acer Iconia W700 which is lovely - quick, well built and a good overall spec. Double the £200 budget - it may be worth buying half the number of tablets though?

we have a Acer W510 for a student and are really impressed with it. We are looking at W700 for some staff.

 

I think the 510 is looking like a more suitable domain based unit. Time to go begging for more money again!

No you still cannot join an RT device to a domain.

Microsoft don't see it as an "issue". It's an intentional design choice. You can manage them via InTune + SCCM I believe, in terms of locking them down, loading apps, etc (in much the same way as you can with MDM modules for iOS, for example) but if you need proper domain management then you need to be looking at something running Windows 8 Pro.
