sims How to Prevent SIMS Next Gen Default Timetables
Wirral_Wonderer replied to EFIRMIN's topic in MIS Systems
The support team we use are saying that PP are talking about delaying the move to Stage 3, at least there may be some good news out of this. Gives us more chance to migrate to a different system! -
I have just started at a school as data manager and asked the IT Team for a SIMS ID login for the Parent App. However they tell me they don't have access either, nor do SBS who support SIMS in the school. The school's SIMS is on-premise and have MS365 and GoogleClassroom, I think they are migrating over to MS365 and I think the Network Manager is also new. I remember setting up SIMS ID when the parent app first came out in a previous school when I was Network manager, and I remember messing round in MS365 and setting up the tennant (along with a lot of swearing!), but that was a loooooong time ago. Is anyone able to point me in the right direction so I can help my IT Team? Cheers

SIMS Connected and NovaT6 Satellite
Wirral_Wonderer replied to Wirral_Wonderer's topic in MIS Systems
Thanks Sally I will check it out when I get time later -
Does anyone know how to download the current version of NovaT6 Satellite install from Sims Connected? My brain is still on half term!!! Thanks
-
Would anyone be happy to share their TimeTabler's experiences of moving from NovaT6 to Bromcom's eTimtabler? I do both network management and Timetabling at my school and was wandering if it is worth going through the pain of learning the new software whilst keeping sane!

Paranoid about SIMS and FMS being time bombed
Wirral_Wonderer replied to Wirral_Wonderer's topic in MIS Systems
I have worked in education for a very long time, I know that I will never be fine But at least I may sleep a bit this weekend knowing that Finance Audit is in on Monday and FMS "Should" work. Backup taken and a virtual server dated a few weeks ago is ready to spin up just in case -
Paranoid about SIMS and FMS being time bombed
Wirral_Wonderer replied to Wirral_Wonderer's topic in MIS Systems
Thanks both, I will quote you on that when I am hauled up in front of the head on Monday -
I have a huge amount of paranoia about us moving away from SIMS and FMS and that will the school still be able to access the data after 1st October. Is anyone able to confirm that after the Summer update that SIMS and FMS will not be time bombed or at least have a Delorian I can borrow?

I have heard of some schools using the Inventry Anywhere App for students to sign in. There doesn't seem to be a way to set their passwords, has anyone else managed to get it working?

Salamander free tool and Bromcom
Wirral_Wonderer replied to Wirral_Wonderer's topic in Cloud Services
Sorry @slugshed, I am being really thick here, but where do I get that from, the instructions say to create an account? -
I am trying to get Salamander's free tool to connect to Bromcom, I was getting there with adding the extra fields not listed on their help sheet and now when I click test Connection, I get the error - Error Getting School data from the Bromcom API. The request failed with HTTP: Status 401: Unauthorised. I can log to Bromcom using the school ID account details, but I can't get past this. I guess it is locked out after too many attempts, does anyone know where this is cleared or is there anything else I need to do? Thanks

New Sophos XG Firewall Nightmare
Wirral_Wonderer replied to Wirral_Wonderer's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Huge thanks to @Wave9_Lee and their team, they went above and beyond to diagnose the issues and sorted a few others out as well. With hindsight I should have asked for help earlier rather than pressing on trying to resolve it myself whilst also swapping to another MIS. At least my swearing kept the staff out of my way, but it wont last!!! Thanks again. -
New Sophos XG Firewall Nightmare
Wirral_Wonderer replied to Wirral_Wonderer's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Thanks for the recommendation @Jobos, I know they are very highly thought of. -
We have purchased a Sophos XG Firewall, after being told that we can set it up ourselves (I should have know better!!!), mostly it works, however.... 1- when we connect andriod devices we get the captive portal popup but won't connect due to certificate error. If we browse to the portal and authenticate it seems to work Sophos solution is to install their client on the device or get a globally signed certificate for the internal IP address (but we are accessing it from a url on an internal private address) 2- when we connect apple devices we don't get anything. If we browse to the portal and authenticate it seems to work. Sophos solution is to install their client on the device or get a globally signed certificate for the internal IP address (but we are accessing it from a url on an internal private address) 3- When we connect Windows devices we get a window asking for authentication but not the pretty portal one that I was expecting 4- We have a few staff who are in the right groups but are knocked off the internet when on domain PCs and reauthenticate every 10 mins - issue with STAS?!? Is anyone available to help, as I am about to have a meltdown. If we need to pay then we will do as I am desperate!!! Thanks

You have got furhter than we have, ours just says system is unable to impor the file - the file slelected is not valid, all the students are shown, but the last line says Unexpected Error the coversions of navchar data to type to a small data type resulted in an out of range value... We are supported by our LA and they came back with that ESS are aware and working on a fix! Good luck!
-
Just so that you are not all scratching your heads, ESS have confirmed that there is an error with SIMS when importing an ATF for new admisssions. Aparently they are working on a solution...
-
That's an interesting solution. I will follow that up. Cheers
-
Thanks for the clarification, now to go cap in hand to the Buisness Team! Cheers

I have been going round in circles for the last few weeks with conditional access and MFA (to disable it on our internal network). We are on the free E1 licence, please can somone confirm if we need an Azure Premium P1 or P2 and also am I right in thinking this can be used to enable MFA on our Remote Desktops? Thanks

Our aged Dell Sonicwall (purchased in 2014!!!) is well beyond it's usefulness, and near on useless for reporting unless we purchase Fastvue reporter. Any thoughts on what is a good Firewall with a decent filter and educational reporting. We also use RDP for staff and would need a MFA solution for a limited number, possibly as a bolt on Before everyone suggests Smoothwall, firstly it doesn't have MFA for RDP, so would have to purchase an extra solution, and is it really as good as the sales team say it is (TBH the demo was pretty good!)? Current thoughts are Smoothwall, Watchguard (waiting on prices) and Fortinet. Thanks everyone

Fantastic, thanks for letting me know, I didn't think to work through all the menus

I am trying to archive our old classes, however the button for cleaning up SDS i snot there. All I have is the option to delete the profile. Have i missed the boat? Plan B is is to write a powershell script to rename the classes and archive them. Any thoughts before I write the PS script really screw up Teams?
-
We have an phone system which pre-dates the dinosaurs and are budgeting to replace it. With Teams being integrated into everyday school life, I was wondering what experiences are of other schools who have transitioned to Teams from an inhouse phone system for both internal and external calls? Our new Business Manager has come from a NHS and Medical Charity background and used Skype with headsets so is not afraid of the jump!

are those prices for cloud based backups and not local? Seems very expensive when you scale it up.
