I think in have sorted my issue. The DG was set to our ISA and not the switch. I need to test it fully tomorrow though! It works with my test VM. I had better get an early start tomorrow just in case!

Just realised that we paid a firm a lot of money 7 years ago to setup our network from scratch and they did the DHCP! Not that changes anything, apart from not feeling a total numpty!

Big oops on the ip range, however we are nat'ed via the LA, it's not caused an issue yet, but something I need to sort out. Thanks

Thanks for the query, the tagged ports are connected to the VM hosts. 3 hosts each with 4 NICs. I configured them when I was trying to configure extra NICs for the DHCP severs for the VLAN 20 before I was told that I should use the routing options of the switch. Currently the NICs are disabled on the VM servers. I hope this makes sense and is right!

OK, I have had a bit more time to look at this now and I am getting out of my depth. Here is my setup: DHCP + DNS X 2 on 172.0.0.11 & 172.0.0.12 SN 255.255.248.0 DG 172.0.0.20 (ISA server) Currently all workstations are on the default VLAN Core switch Layer 3 HP 5406 connected to 2610s and 4208 (Layer 2s?) 5406 IP is 172.0.1.15 SN 255.255.248.0 DG 172.0.1.15 (its self) I am finally trying to segregate my traffic for BYOD and also to reduce network broadcasts. I have created another scope on my DHCP servers 172.0.20.0-172.0.23.255 SN 255.255.252.0 VLAN on my 5406 called BYOD-Stu VLAN:20 There is another VLAN – LEA VLAN:02 which connects our internet feed from the old server room to the new one but no VLAN IPs are set IP 172.0.20.15 SN 255.255.252.0 DG 172.0.20.15 IP Helper-address – 172.0.0.11 & 172.0.0.12 Nothing else is setup on the switch apart from STP, DHCP Relay and IP routing is enabled. I have created a VM connected to a NIC untagged to VLAN:20, however it will not get an IP address, any thoughts on what I am missing? :-(

I am preparing for BYOD at the moment and have hit a brick wall (many times!) I have 3 VLANs 1 (default) and 20 (BYOD-Stu) Our DCs are on VM Sphere and setup VLAN 20 on each of the hosts One DC has an extra NIC on VLAN 20 and an static IP 10.0.0.11, and will deliver an IP to a workstation on another host, however if I connect a workstation to a port (B13) which is "untagged" against Vlan 20 I can ping 10.0.0.11 but it will not give me an IP address!!! Each of the hosts NICs have the VLAN 20 tagged The Switch is a HP Procurve 5406 and the config is below. Any ideas before I set up another server with DHCP enabled? vlan 1 name "DEFAULT_VLAN" no untagged A21-A22,B13,B21-B24 untagged A1-A20,A23-A24,B1-B12,B14-B20,C1-C24 ip address dhcp-bootp ip igmp exit vlan 20 name "BYOD-Stu" untagged B13 tagged A2,A4,A7,A9,A11,A17,B2-B7,B19 no ip address ip helper-address 10.0.0.11 exit spanning-tree

Thanks, that is my next plan using VLC Player across the same switch and then across the core switch, sadly I am outside all day on a sponsored walk, so I won't get chance until tomorrow now! They are on the same VLAN and subnet though. It does sound like a routing issue though.

I am struggling with setting up Mulitcasting with SCCM 2012. I can multicast to a VM client through vSphere 5.1, however when I try to deploy the same image to physical client I receive a 0x80091007 error. The vSphere infrastructure is connected to a HP Procurve 5406 switch and the client is on a HP Procurve 2650 Switch. All managed switches have IGMP enabled. I have even tried connecting the client directly to the 5603, with the same error Does anyone have any ideas on where to start with this? To me it looks like a switch routing issue, either on vSphere or Procurve. I have tried changing the VM NIC from E1000 to VMXNET3. I have 400 workstations to reload over the summer and really don't want to unicast!

Thanks guys, we have a Acer W510 for a student and are really impressed with it. We are looking at W700 for some staff. I think the 510 is looking like a more suitable domain based unit. Time to go begging for more money again!

Our Physics department are keen to get hold of some tablets, they are looking at the Dell XPS 10inch (£200ish - Buy Dell XPS 10 Inch Windows 8 RT Tablet at Argos.co.uk - Your Online Shop for Tablets.) however it comes with Windows 8 RT. We are on MS EES so in theory can upgrade to Win8 Pro. •2GB RAM. •Microsoft Windows 8 RT operating system. •1.5GHz Qualcomm 8060A processor. •32GB HDD. Does anyone know if this is possible and if the hardware will support 8 pro?

I was contacted to day by our MS EES supplier to remind me that the renewall is due, whilst on the phone he said that Forefront has been discontinued We are still running ISA 2006, mainly for local user control and logging, not much else. We have purchased the Forefront Perpetual License to stay legal, however what are other schools using to monitor and secure their networks from the LA on the cheap?

Thanks for the reply, am I right in thinking that cygwin allows linux applications to run on a windows platform? NFS sounds a simpler solution as staff had read only access through the old system. Does NFS also need linux?

We were using an internal Exchange 2007 server with access to folders, however it died the other day so was went to office 365 for email. However the loss of access to network shares will be of some concern to staff. I have been looking at the Windows Share Web Client block to connect users to a Shared drive on the file server I am very confused, please can someone clarify if this will now work if Moodle is on a windows server (2008) and the file server is also a windows server (2003)? It appears to me that I need to install SMB Client and cygwin, which server does this go on and are there any security concerns with these applications? Is there any other way - office365 sharepoint? Dear All, The story so far... We used to have an Epson B500 in the art dept, which was working great, however one day it stopped working. The finance dept has done a deal with a local OEM toner firm which supplies us with reconditioned laser printers FOC. We replaced the B500 with a recon HP LJ4650 which is great at most things but eats full page colour prints. We have tried changing paper, different brands of toner even puka HP, keeping the paper in another room in case it is becoming damp, new fuser units. Understandably the art department want to throttle me. Before they do, what do other schools use, any thought on continuous feed ink jet systems? Many thanks

I have just been sent an email Boardworks saying "...Prior to the school’s change to an academy, the school purchased resources from Boardworks, ... These licenses are currently not valid for use at the new academy...." Has anyone else had one of these?

We are in the same situation. Microsoft are launching Office 365 (rebadged live@edu) for education with basic sharepoint for free, but then charging for full sharepoint on a per teacher per month basis. I am looking at a short term fix using skydrive, yacapaca, and other open forums. I know this is not ideal, but at lease we are in control of what we use and can use new features when and where we want. I have also come across EDU 2.0 for school: the free, easy way to teach and learn online, but not had time to really look at it yet (cost $900 per year for 999-2000 students!)

Due to drop in LA funding we are thinking of dropping uniservity (£4k per year) and using edu20. Has anyone looked at it or using it?

I know this is nothing to do with IT, however I have been asked to investigate a low voltage power installation for two new music suites. I seen that some schools have a large DC transformer with individually fused outputs which supply 12V DC to the desk. Has anyone got these, if so do you have any names and specs you could share? Thanks for the responses. Currently they have an extremely poorly inkjet. I am investigating the costs of small colour copiers for various departments; however this is taking a very long time! In the meantime I need to update their current printing solution. They need A3, and they will only be printing onto paper or card, no textiles or cakes etc! I do like the CISS solution, but is it very messy to maintain? Is it cheaper to run than a colour laser? Thanks
