There are a couple of good articles on the Xbox/PS4 today on Arstechnica :-

The Xbox One and PS4 share similar specs, but the devil

Does the power of today

I'm starting to feel tempted to cancel my XB1 pre-order TBH. I also have a PS4 on order and other than Forza5 (which really looks awesome) there aren't any exclusive titles out for it I want that aren't also coming out on Sony's console. From the tech articles I've been reading and the comments regarding the games it is really looking like the PS4 is going to have a significant hardware advantage this generation. It's making me feel apprehensive about buying an XB1 at launch especially given it's the more expensive machine......

Hmmmm...

it is really looking like the PS4 is going to have a significant hardware advantage this generation.

It's going to be a while before developers take advantage of the better hardware though.

Five reasons why PS4 and Xbox One games will blow your minds in 8 years time « Pocket-Lint

... we've taken a look at five top games that featured as launch titles for the current generation of consoles, either Xbox 360, PS3 or both, and their franchise equivalents at the tail end of those consoles' lifespans. The difference in quality is quite remarkable.

Xbox One memory performance improved for production console « Eurogamer

...the launch games will have mostly been developed on incomplete hardware - a state of affairs that was blatantly obvious from titles seen so far. On paper, Sony retains a clear specs advantage, but it was difficult to see that reflected in the quality of the games at E3. Based on what we're hearing about the approach to next-gen development, it could be quite some time before any on-paper advantage translates into an appreciably better experience on-screen. (Source)

If you purchased all of the launch day games, they would take up approx. 341.35GB leaving you with just 158.65GB of free disk space.

Remind me, digital only is the future right? No more disks, right?

While you're still downloading a 50gb game, I'll be playing it from the disk.

Physical copy master race. :p

Surprised the hard drive is still 500gb considering the size of these downloads, especially if that's what they're trying to push. What's the betting they have an "elite" version in the pipeline already?

Oh, they probably do. It'll be announced just after launch and be way more expensive.

Or just before and the fee for upgrading will be a lot higher than buying a similar sized HDD/SSD.

I'm upping the PS4 to a 1TB SSHD on day one. After that it's a case of superfast broadband (currently at 60Mbps but can up it to 120Mbps at any time) and simple hard drive management (delete games I've played and don't need any more/redownload if I change my mind).

I probably will up the HDD too, but I can't afford super fast internet... I have other, more important, bills to pay.

I think the PS4 will look slightly better after a few years than the xbox but MS have set up 300,000 server for online players. Add that to the fact they have a massive head start in the online gaming side of things and things balance out. Something like 75% of all online gaming last year was done on an xbox and now they have this massive infrastructure setup to take online gaming to the next level.

Please do not cancel your order as we need someone to test both and feed back. I will take whichever one you do not want, but can only pay with a smiley.

This is a totaly meaningless statistic without any detail. Are they virtual or real servers? In one data farm, or spread across the globe? What spec are they? CPU? RAM? Network connections? Are they dedicated for a particlular game/use?

All I know is the Drivertar feature of Forza 5 looked very interesting.

If I am recalling the launch event correctly, I am sure they said dedicated servers for each game. However as you say, no details on the spec of server and environment.

They also mentioned computing in the cloud to get better performance, which has been called out multiple times.

I wouldn't trust what they say at a staged PR event.

Well I just preordered one, can't get the forza bundle here which is rubbish as now I get a pointless copy of FIFA that I will probably never play. Still $700 now so only 50 more than the ps4 and I can use it with media too which is something I do tonnes of, everything with an hdmi port that I own can do dlna and switching devices to quickly bang a picture or mp3 up is insane.

Are they virtual or real servers?

Virtual.

During a session at the GDC Next conference in Los Angeles, Microsoft’s John Bruno spoke in-depth about the Xbox Live Compute system. While it’s based on Microsoft’s Azure technology, it has been modified specifically to fit the Xbox One‘s needs as a platform. Games like Forza Motorsport 5 will use the technology to enhance certain aspects of the game, but that comes at a cost. Bruno specifically notes that “once in a while, rather frequently actually, the host OS will require an update, meaning the physical machine is going to get rebooted, whether your code is running or not.” If the connection is dropped, or the server completely reboots, you could potentially lose progress in your game. (Source)

In one data farm, or spread across the globe?

Global.

Xbox Live Compute represents one of the ways that games will be better on Xbox One. This service is specifically designed to enable game creators to utilize the scalable computing resources that Microsoft deploys within our regional datacenters, to enhance their game experiences beyond what is generally possible with the finite resources of a console. (Source)

So, why did we build Xbox Live Compute? When we were planning the next generation of Xbox Live, we spent a lot of time talking with game creators about ways to make games better. We realized that there was an incredible opportunity to bring together the resources and global scale of Windows Azure, with the game services of Xbox Live to build a cloud computing platform that was uniquely focused on gaming and game creators. Our intent was to enable developers to take advantage of server resources in their games without having to deal with the challenges that come with building, managing and running servers at scale.

The Machinima snap app looks like it could be good as well.

One of the first things “Xbox, Snap Machinima” will do is offer curated videos from our catalog based on the current game you’re playing. These videos will provide everything from game walk-throughs, game reviews, help videos and more. Additionally, we’ll offer an enhanced Snap experience, also known as “Machinima Wingman,” for a select number of Xbox One titles that will provide richer, custom-created and exclusive videos to complement gameplay experiences and offering everything from in-game help and tutorials to strategy videos.
