tmcd35 Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 If a game is effectively locked to one user making it much much harder to copy then surely the "subsidy" that legitimate buyers make should be reduced as they should be copied less I agree entirely. But the counter arguement is "how much does it cost to produce a AAA game?". A couple of hundred people working 3-4 years?
X-13 Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 But the counter arguement is "how much does it cost to produce a AAA game?". A couple of hundred people working 3-4 years? And the counter to that is either: A) How about you stop paying them insane amounts of money? or B) How about you learn to manage your budgets better?

Theblacksheep Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 And to counter that - "Fine, but well only give you more games like AC:III" That was awful and the reason i'm not going near AC:BF.
X-13 Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 (edited) And to counter that - "Fine, but well only give you more games like AC:III" And to counter that... "I like AC:III" But, seriously, if an indie game made by one guy sells better than a AAA title with a $10 SQUILLION budget... Something is wrong. Likewise, if your AAA game is regarded a failure even though it sold a bazillion copies, something is wrong. [Apparently bazillion is a real word... the more you know.] That was awful and the reason i'm not going near AC:BF. But, it's Pirates! Edited July 11, 2013 by X-13
CAM Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 @X-13: Clue is in the name - indie. Publishers slap an enormous expense and business ethic on top of development studios who can't afford to distribute and publicize the titles themselves. Developers work slave hours for slave wages as development takes over more and more of their life just to get shafted by the publisher (again) and abused by the fanbase over bugs typically introduced by the publisher's demands and changes. It's possibly one of the worst professions to be in unless you really love developing games.
X-13 Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 @X-13: Clue is in the name - indie. Exactly. If an INDIE studio has a higher profit margin than a AAA studio, then the AAA studio needs to re-evaluate what it's doing. Which includes telling publishers where to stick their demands.
Theblacksheep Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 (edited) But, it's Pirates! It is, but ubisoft can burn in hell for their terrible engines, hours of tutorials even though its sequel, boring gameplay, annoying advertsing and the worst thing ever UPLAY!!!!!!! (I may or may not have ordered watch_dogs for ps4) Developers work slave hours for slave wages as development takes over more and more of their life just to get shafted by the publisher (again) and abused by the fanbase over bugs typically introduced by the publisher's demands and changes. It's possibly one of the worst professions to be in unless you really love developing games. I made £1,500 in royalties on a game that sold over 5m units. Edited July 11, 2013 by Theblacksheep

sted Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 I agree entirely. But the counter arguement is "how much does it cost to produce a AAA game?". A couple of hundred people working 3-4 years? but if say 1/2 were pirated before now its 10% surely that means they can make more money selling it cheaper so its even less worth pirating while being harder to pirate
CAM Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 Big profit games aren't unheard of, but they also aren't common either. For every Minecraft or D:ET there are many more indie titles that get overlooked or fail miserably. A publisher is a shortcut to the big markets and a better chance of hitting the charts.

Except when that publisher is EA... [censored] EA. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is a good game. [Especially since it's the studio's first game, IIRC]. The developers went bankrupt, EA made $10million. THIS IS WRONG! FRENCH Canadian. "Sorry, we're cheese eating surrender-monkeys, eh"? Edited July 11, 2013 by X-13

X-13 Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 How did this happen? Xbox One demand "through the roof", could outship PS4 by 3-to-1 « Hexus I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's either selective data parsing or straight up marketing BS.
CyberNerd Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's either selective data parsing or straight up marketing BS. Like all the BS about SurfaceRT pre-orders being sold out, eventually leaving MS with a $900 million loss
CAM Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 I wouldn't trust anything MS say in their current state of schizophrenic lunacy. One minute everything seems on track, the next they hit the world with rapidly changing idiotic ideas before repealing them without a trace of admitting fault.
LosOjos Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 It's funny how MS seem to be like a lost puppy excitedly chasing their tail since Bill left. We all knew Balmer was crazy! In an unrelated note, it's strange too that Apple seem to have given up on marketing and started in a downwards spiral since Jobs died. I've never been a fan of Apple but they seem to have completely lost it now. Maybe it's mere coincidence, but I can't help but feel both companies have been left in the hands of people who just don't understand their own products appeal.

CAM Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 I think the lunacy is spreading TBH as everyone goes mobile crazy. MS with Metro tells it's own story, Apple wishing they could do the same giving rise to the new iOS and the largest Linux distro Ubuntu went utterly mental and threw most of it's toys out the pram to shove Unity in our faces (I've used it, I hate it). Now we have Mozilla jumping on the mobile bandwagon, Ubuntu again and even Facebook are trying to get in on grabbing a slice of OS pie. Imagine a world where your computer's basic functions are run by Zuckerburg and co....
tmcd35 Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Microsofts general problem is they don't know who they are supposed to be competing against. Is Sony/Nintendo for gaming? Is it Apple/Google for TV and mobile? Is it Google/Yahoo for the Internet? Is it Oracle/VMWare for virtualisation? Is it Amazon in the cloud? Is it Software as a Service? They fighting too many battles on too many fronts and have forgotten their core markets along the way. I can see MS starting to loose their grip in the corporate world now. I can't remember where I read this, but I certainly agree, Microsoft should have been broken up into separate companies years ago.
