So are we saying that John Hurt is an older 9th Doctor (McGann) having aged? We've never had a Doctor who's aged. Just Colin Baker getting fatter.

No the idea is that McGann regenerated into Hurt and Hurt regenerated into Eccelstone, we just haven't heard the story of the 9th Doctor (Hurt).

Therefore Eccelstone = 10th Doctor, Tennant = 11th Doctor and Smith = 12th Doctor.

No. Hurt is a NEW doctor.

Or... more like a previously unmentioned regeneration that comes between McGann and Ecclestone.

Then there's the whole he's The Doctor, but he's not "The Doctor"...

Not that I've looked into it (and I don;t even see how it's possible), but is Matt Smith confirmed for the next Season yet? He's not going out of it is he and being replaced by Hurt?

But he cant be a New future Doctor, because the current Doctor knew exactly who he was

I meant new in the sense we've never heard of him.

I heard he was leaving at Christmas...

It was superb! I actually think these last seven episodes have been the best in a whilse. I rather thought the show lost it's way with the Rory & Amy storyline.

So I reckon John hurt is the ninth doctor (a new one therefore moving the others up a notch) We know the doctor himself would never commit genocite. He just isn't capable (providing you ignore rememberance of the daleks)

So I surmise that Hurt is the ninth Doctor who then became the Valeyard (the Valeyard isn't just the doctor between the 12th and final regeneration, he is the darker side of the doctor present at all times but never allowed to surface (except in a few of the novels when the 7th Doc becomes him for a time))

This would allow him to do the dirty on the Time Lords and the Daleks, though it looks like it also cost hime his own life.

It was tennant or Ecclestone who said 'they burned' so I assume he'll bring about whatever cataclysm ended the time war and resulted in the time lock :)

No he's in the Anniversary special, though I have heard he might be leaving after that...

Don't forget the original Silurians which Pertwee and UNIT killed off (before the 'new who' changed the history) and the Zygons.

The Doctor has a history of Genocide.

Hmm but of course he could know his future self, he's met his past self before so that means the past Doctors met future Doctors... if you see what I mean? :)

But the Doctor is always very surprised at what he looks like after a Regeneration, if he knew his future selves then he would know what to expect

On a side note....did anyone else think the Whisper Men were a bit rubbish....and just a people version of the snowmen?

I didn't even know they were called Whisper Men until people were talking about them...

Though it made me laugh that there are more and more monsters with bits of their face missing.

Silence = Just eyes

Whisper Men = Just a mouth

Next big thing, giant ears or a giant nose.

Sorry I don't understand that.

I was saying that it could be possible for Hurt to be a later Doctor that the current Doctor met whilst knocking about time and space, that's how he knows who he is.

From the episode I walked away thinking Hurt was a pre-Hartnell incarnation. Having read through this thread I like the idea of John Hurt being between Eccleston and McGann and being responsible for the Time War. That kind of thing makes me excited about the 50th Anniversary special.

In terms of numbering, didn't one of the recent doctors point to himself and give a number? I'm sure it makes Matt Smith number 11. I like the idea that McGann just grew old and that's who Hurt will be playing.

As for Matt Smith and Clara (can't remember the actresses name) - I'm sure I read somewhere that they are both signed up for the next season?

They are, so no worries there. Smith will do at least one more season, which is great news as I think the dynamic between him and clara is the best they've had in the show for a while.

Matt is the 11th "Doctor" but he's the 12th regeneration.

Hurt did something that makes it so he doesn't have the right to be called "The Doctor" anymore.

I've actually turned episodes off this season rather than watch them to the end! If they pulled a stunt like that I may not bother watching the show again. There's only so many time that Dr Who can "jump the shark" and be forgiven in the name of Sci-Fi!
