Nick_Parker Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 Hi all, I'm having a very odd problem with 3x HP V1810-48G Switches. Everything is working perfectly and then overnight a few of the ports will stop working. The computer/laptop still picks up that it is connected & the switch still picks up the link as active but no traffic goes through. The computer/laptop won't be able to get an IP and even if I manually assign one, it still cannot ping or connect to anything. If I plug the computer into a different port then it all works, alternately, if I reboot the switch, it all starts working again (but obviously it disconnects the other 47 ports while the reboot occurs). I have updated the switches firmware to the latest in the hopes that maybe it was a software fault but it is still occurring. If it was one switch I would assume it to be a faulty switch but the fact that it is happening on 3 switches means there is some sort of configuration fault somewhere. I thought maybe it was loop protection but that isn't enabled. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
Nick_Parker Posted May 9, 2013 Author Posted May 9, 2013 Not enabled I've found one thread on an HP forum where 2 or 3 people have had the same problem but they are also still looking for a solution.
cpjitservices Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 (edited) I've seen this before on an enterprise Nortel, and we had to bin the switch. It's a Hardware level failure or it was on the Nortels anyway, the very same symptoms. Although - I would double check what Spanning-Tree is doing, you may not have it enabled but I bet it has Rapid Spanning tree or Loop detect enabled or something similar and it could be dropping the links to the switches - the links that keep dropping are they switch to switch links ???? if this keeps happening it Might be time to ring HP and abuse your lifetime warranty Edited May 9, 2013 by cpjitservices
chazzy2501 Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 have you enabled them as edge ports and turned on RSTP?
Michael Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 It does sound like a switch failure, but to have three go at once... what are the odds? I'd suggest resetting them to factory default in turn, with minimal config as possible initially. If the problem(s) are still there then I'd agree they need replacing.
SYNACK Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 I thought it was rebranded 3Com not rebranded d-link. You could try turning off a bunch of debugging if there is an option and turning on a bunch of logging, there was a hack to turn on the cli I think that may give you options.
Nick_Parker Posted May 9, 2013 Author Posted May 9, 2013 (edited) @cpjitservices Loop detection is disabled so it's not that And the ports are not switch to switch links - just a random one or two of the normal 48 ports that connect to PCs. @chazzy2501 I don't think it's possible to enable them as edge ports? @Michael - There were all factory reset before I installed them, it was only after they started giving problems that I logged into them and updated the firmware. @SYNACK - I'll have a look and see what logging options it has Thanks everyone for your input so far! CyberNerd Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 It does sound like it could be an STP misconfig somewhere - I'd be inclined to check the core switches and look for stp abnormalities. No CLI on V1810 so if you do decide to get shot of them I'd advise getting something more manageable.
chazzy2501 Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 I just read the manual (I don't even own this switch!) it says that under the STP you can explicitly set a port as edge. (only for ports that connect to a client, not another switch)
Nick_Parker Posted May 15, 2013 Author Posted May 15, 2013 Am I correct in assuming that STP = Loop Detection? If so, Loop Detection is disabled on the switch so it can't be that causing it?
BenMcDougall Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 Ni Nick, I know its been a while, but did you ever find a solution to this problem. I am having the same issue exactly? Thanks Ben
glennda Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 Ni Nick, I know its been a while, but did you ever find a solution to this problem. I am having the same issue exactly? Thanks Ben I see this all the time with HP switches - managed, web managed and unmanaged - never worked out why. On reboot the ports come back.
ConradJones Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 I see this all the time with HP switches - managed, web managed and unmanaged - never worked out why. On reboot the ports come back. because their made by hP? @glennda Pro-Curve or 3Com ?
BenMcDougall Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 These are HP pro-curve, not 3COM rebrands. I notice that they reboot themselves roughly every 2 weeks as well !
glennda Posted October 18, 2013 Posted October 18, 2013 because their made by hP? @glennda Pro-Curve or 3Com ? HP - Always and the lower end tho @BenMcDougall - I have never seen that.
timtom Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 I used to have this exact issue - the switches would continue to work but you couldn't get into the management until a hard reset. The fix seemed to be (well, they've all held for 3-4 months now) upgrading to the latest firmware. At the time for us this was from PK1.4 to PK1.15 although there is likely an even later one now
Nick_Parker Posted October 21, 2013 Author Posted October 21, 2013 Ni Nick, I know its been a while, but did you ever find a solution to this problem. I am having the same issue exactly? Thanks Ben Hey Ben, I'm afraid I still have not found a decent solution - beginning to think it may be worth looking at a different switch for these areas. Pity tho, all our other HP switches have been fantastic, it just seems to be a fault with this particular model.

lmgtfy Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 @Nick_Parker Just wondering if you ever found a solution or if you just replaced as we are having the exact same problem. Shocking that HP are ignoring it really considering its on their forums as well Questions about our V1810-48G Switches - HP Enterprise Business Community
lmgtfy Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Further to my last post I thought I would have one more look on HP's website and they have released a new firmware recently on the 09-Jan-2014 version PK.1.18. Has anyone tried this I know I will be tomorrow!
Nick_Parker Posted January 29, 2014 Author Posted January 29, 2014 Hey @Imgtfy, Nope, no luck, still the same problem and having to regularly reset the switches. I have tested the new firmware (PK.1.18) and same issue still
glennda Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 The problem is the limited functionality of the spanning tree on these devices, This is half of the problem you have with these low end switches I'm afraid.
lmgtfy Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 Hey @Imgtfy, Nope, no luck, still the same problem and having to regularly reset the switches. I have tested the new firmware (PK.1.18) and same issue still O dear that's a real shame I was really hoping they may have fixed it. @glennda I appreciated these switches are not expensive high end switches but believe me I have Netgear switches that were far cheaper in fact completely unmanaged switches that were like £10 and they never have had this issue. Has anyone contacted HP over this so far? Cheers
chazzy2501 Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 @Nick_Parker Just for giggles have you tried manually setting the options for the failing ports. I'd try forcing them to 100Mbit (Client won't notice anyway and reliability trumps speed) I'm not saying this is the issue it just might accidently fix it. 100Mbit is way less involved than Gigabit.
