This is the SQL conversion release as well, fun times ahead :D

 

I have it downloaded but I'm holding off installing for now because I need (want) to do the Personnel conversion first and test that before I launch into the one that could go tragicly wrong.

 

Anyone installed it yet?

Installed the 7.96 August on a virtual PC setup, just one minor hitch with SQL 2000 SP4 - can be fixed via KB solution.

 

Can't go any further on that setup though - need to get hold of the SQL 2005 conversion util - but this is only available through SOLUS 2 and not on the CD.

 

Gonna bite the bullet and do the August update on main system without SQL migration tonight to get hold of sql util to test on virtual setup.

Having other issues though now with the main server upgrade :?

 

Hoping its related to using remote desktop ...... we will soon see.

Just a pointer that I had to phoen up tech support regarding.

 

The SQL2005Migration.exe file does not appear in the Sims/Setups folder automatically. When you have doen the update you need to run the infrastructure.exe again which will unpack the files needed for migration.

 

Might give it a go tonight.

 

On another matter, the ability to log on directly to Sims using Windows Authentication seems to work okay except when you try and use the old way to log on. Sims system manager changes the username to domain/username but it will not allow me to log on whatever password I use.

The migration went well with only a little panic as I chose windows authentication instead of mixed mode on the Sql 2005.

 

Its a good idea to install the Management studio too which I missed out on the install options. This lets you change the mode and mess around with the settings. I ended up downloading it fromt he internet.

 

It seems soooo much faster.. not

Ye sI installed it and it went OK.. When the user logs on for the first time it tries to update Adobe Reader...which fails as the users has no rights...

 

But SIMS is OK

Our staff users only have 3 letters in their logon and SIMS demands 4.. so how will it work ?

Works fine, I changed all our staff today to use windows authentication. One of these only had 3 letters and it accepted it.

It wasn't related to remote desktop in the end, it was down to the account the services were starting up as.

 

Time now to try a 64 bit server - not supported I know but hoping performance will out weigh any potential issues.

Is it possible NOT to use Windows Authentication but keep the old way of doing it? We have one user for whom his SIMS logon doesn't match his network logon, and I really don't want to cause him difficulties...

What windows authentication, phrase can o' worms springs to mind, we have enough fun making sure our teachers log out of sims, if you do not require another login to run sims, security if majourly decreased aspecially with those stubborn members of staff.

Nick,

 

The choice is entirely yours. You have to edit the connect.ini file to turn on Windows Authentication - so if you do not make any change, the usual SIMS login box will continue to appear - with users being required to separately log into SIMS.

 

However, if you wish to remove the ability for your staff to separately log into SIMS - then you can do this, by pointing the users in System Manager to their domain/username - and modifying the Connect.ini to say Connectiontype=trustedauto or Connectiontype=trusted. Full details are in the System Manager handbook.

 

But - be reassured. The authentication method for SIMS does not change, unless you manually change the settings. Therefore, after upgrading to the August Release, the authentication method will still be SIMS and not Windows.

Hi,

 

Just bitten the bullet and done the August upgrade via Solus after assurance from LEA Tech Support that it's all been tested and runs ok.

 

Upgrade progressed okay but now can't log in to SIMS.Net. Either on the Server or on clients.

 

Get the "Sims connection failed for login [name], reason: 7" error message.

 

LEA Tech Support now not answering phone and a search for KB71595 has proved fruitless. Hair on floor.

 

Anyone help?

 

God help us when we come to do the SQL2005 conversion/upgrade.

log in as sysman and password

 

 

a) reset all the passwords by hand

b) explain to staff on the most chaotic day of the year they have new passwords and they have to change them when they log in with the temp one you gave them.

Note that this is if you have detached the SIMS database and attach it to another SQL server instance on the same or different server.

 

@Tech_Guy have you moved SIMS to another server?
