Almost 90% of the time that I switch on my Windows 8 PC (Specs in Sig) in the mornings from a cold boot, I get a Black Screen as soon as Windows loads. Sometimes I get a a mouse cursor that stops responding after a few seconds and sometimes I just get a Black Screen with no mouse cursor. I have to power off the PC and switch it on again for it to boot up properly. I have fully updated Windows and I'm still seeing the issue nearly every morning (or whenever I start the PC from a cold boot).

As far as I'm aware I've not got any hardware issues.

Anyone else experienced something similar?

we had something similar and left the pc for an hour and it came back to life. Turned out it was installing some windows updates but just not telling us it was doing it. However you said you have done all updates Edited by squeeky

Well, it's been 2 days since I updated the BIOS and have to say, no black screen and Windows boot up has been unbelievably fast! Didn't get a chance to time it, but it was definitely fast than before! I'll keep an eye on it, but I had no idea a BIOS update could have such a positive impact!

Only in the mornings? Only Cold Boot?

My guess is that its initialising another piece of hardware that has an issue.

Is it ok when its warmed up? Can you cold boot it throughout the day without issue?

Possibly that Video Card is pulling all the power from the PSU.. bit like a starter motor on a cold day.

Is there an new driver for the Video Card? Is it Signed for Windows 8?

I would check that the PSU is sufficient enough for everything you have loaded up on that Rig.

3 x 1TB HDDS and a Video Card that specifies a minimum system requirement of 500w an i7 CPU and god know what else you have crammed into the Antec Case you probably need some heavy duty jumper leads to start it in the morning ;)

Well so would I, but clearly something is holding it back so I would jettison some of the load one morning before you power up just to test it. disconnect a couple of drives, unplug any USB kit do anything to drop the load on a cold start and see.

Well, firstly, apologies for the thread resurrection. But despite trying all the advice on this thread and despite reformatting my PC and reinstalling it with Windows 8.1, I'm still getting this issue. The really weird thing is that it only seems to happen from a cold boot in the mornings. If I come home from work and boot up the PC (despite it not being booted up at all for the whole day) Windows boots up just fine. However, in the mornings, I will get a full black screen or a black screen with the cursor stuck in the middle.

Any ideas? BIOS and all drivers are up to date.

GPU, had the same kind of issue on an asus tablet till they spat out WDDM 1.3 drivers for it. It could be that the card or the drivers are not snaping to quick enough as W8 uses gpu acceleration for everything metro. Can you try it with a different GPU temporarily?

No, don't have one available :(

It's a standard Gigabyte Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 Ti running the latest WHQL drivers from Nvidia. I'm presuming that shouldn't cause the issue.

Unless it is very slightly dodgey, not enough to cause problems with most things but some things in computers were not made to be fully ready in as shorter time as Windows 8 can manage a boot. Can you add a delay in the bios, that may also alleviate the issue.

One thing, did you install the AI Suite crud that comes with the motherboard?

I have had huge problems with pretty much every version of that software so now I never install it. The power management part can really mess up graphics cards when coming out of sleep for example too resulting in the card not initialising.

Also try turning fast boot settings off in the bios as well as removing all usb devices besides essentials in case one of them is the cause.

Actually having this issue with a dell 9010 we recently ordered, will try your suggestion now - thanks!

Noooo... I stay miles away from AI Suite! Never ever needed it! I'll have a look at the fast boot options when I get home. As for USB devices, all I have plugged in is:

Microsoft Wireless Receiver for Keyboard and Mouse

Microsoft Xbox 360 Controller for Windows

That's pretty much it!

I had a similar issue with my Home PC when I built it a year ago. Cold boot would black screen, but subsequent reboots were fine.

Turned out the PSU was iffy, because as soon as I swapped from the 850W down to a 750W spare it worked perfectly.

Do you have another PSU you can test with it?

You trying this without any additional hardware plugged in to the machine?

**EDIT**Oops, didnt see the last page on this thread, ignore what i said.

Unless of course its a device plugged inside the machine (graphics adapter, wireless pci card etc)

I had a PC that did this exact thing for 5 years! I just left it in sleep. Always would post but nothing would happen had to force reset and it was fine. I think it was a RAM issue. Same ram in both slots? or have you got some OCZ ram that needs overclocking to get the rated speed. (so the SPD data isn't quite right)

I've got the following RAM in my rig:

GeIL 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz VALUE PLUS Dual Channel (GVP38GB1600C9DC)

It's running at stock, haven't forayed in to overclocking as yet.
