Ruckus 7982 AP's

Well I spoke to the head today and it looks like I am about to get the authority to order a ZD3050 and 25*7982 Ap's

which will put one in each classroom and leave 3 spare to jot round other areas of the school.

 

I know there is a lot of people on this forum that use Ruckus but I just wanted to know were you mount your ap's ??

as today I was told for best reception to the wireless devices to mount them on the ceiling as we are only a single story building,

but is this where everyone else mounts them or do you wall mount them ??

I did look at the new AC access points but a couple of companies have told me to avoid them.

Avoid them on what basis - the access points are not even in general circulation but from what i have seen of pre-production units they are awesome!

My Ruckus APs are mounted on the ceiling using the mounting kit you can get from Ruckus, we do have odd ones on walls though but they are facing the direction of use

Do you notice any difference in performance with the wall mounted and ceiling mounted AP's.

No doubt you should avoid them at all costs as,

 

1. They are far too cheap

2. Have too little margin in the MSRP for the vendor to make any profit/commission worth the effort.

3. Do not require expensive controllers and additional licensing

4. Have no requirement for complex and expensive aftersales maintenance contracts.

5. Are simple enough to install yourself even if your IQ starts with a decimal point.

 

No, you are far better advised to seriously look at the most expensive solutons available as they are no doubt better suited to your requirements.

Or you cold spend about £50 and test one for yourself...

Ruckus is fine, ceiling mounting is good as it gets you line of sight to the devices without too many meat sacks (humans) in the way to mess up the signal.

 

Unfi is great to brute force with but lacks the civility of a managed system that can beam form, client redirect and actually pay attention to what other aps are on the channel, none of which is unfi's strong suit but if you are just flooding the area with aps effectively hitting it with a big hammer then unfit may work for you too.

Don't get me wrong, I'm looking at some of their cameras and for some deployments they will work fine but some other solutions undeniably have more smarts built in. Yes some of this may be fixed by new software in UnFi's future but the others have it right now so it is unfair saying they are the same when a lot of the features don't yet exist on it. It is much better now they have released the pro grade hardware but there are still holes, these may or may not affect you but should be included in the comparisons.

We mount ours according to the room their in. Some are ceiling mounted, but most are wall mounted (as our ceilings are stupidly high and difficult to cable).

 

I'd question why you need an AP in every room though personally! That's a heck of a lot of capacity. I'd also question the need of a 3050 series controller? The 1125 would do you fine, and you can get a further license for it to move up to 50 APs and 1250 concurrent sessions.

Wall mounted using the Ruckus mounting kit. As with @localzuk our ceilings are way too high to make this a sensible option.

 

With regards to the number of APs, have you had a wireless survey done? @CPLTD came to our site and worked out how many APs we needed for our requirements and where to locate them.

You might not need as many APs as you think?

The school has had such bad experiences with wireless in the past so while we are not paying for it why not order the 3050 and 7982 ap's.

I've upgraded mine to 3050 with additional the 7982 x25 and should be arrive today. Its worked out cheaper for me than replacing the my old Zone Flex 1025 to 1125
