SIM Only Contracts - Any good deals?

Data. I barely use my phone for calls and I don't send vast amounts of text, but I get though close to 1Gb of data a month. If I had unlimited, I could get Google Music on the go and leave my iPod at home. :)

 

Virgin Mobile do the same price plan for £17/Month with Unlimited Data. However, they have recently changed their policy so that if you do go over the limit, you will be charged £1 per day for unlimited data. So, unless you go through 1Gb at the very start of the month, I think that's a decent enough offer. See http://virginmedia.com/datach for more details.

 

Having said that though, I don't think any Unlimited Tarriff will be sufficient for constant listening to Google Music as you'll very quickly hit the fair usage policy limit.

Does GiffGaff have any specific restrictions outside the UK my Y10 daughter is soon to go on an exchange to Spain and is currently using a very old mobile on PAYG and currently rarely needs a top up of more than a tenner every 6 months but she is keen to buy herself a Nokia 620 and use that as her PAYG.

 

I'd consider GiffGaff "semi-contract" - the £12 a month is a "booster" that gets you your minutes/texts/internet, and then everything else on top of that is PAYG. I've never bought non-booster credit though as I don't send MMS (why would you when all phones capable of receiving picture messaging can also receive emails now?). You can set up the £12 a month to renew automatically through the website so it's pretty much the same as a pay monthly phone.

 

I switched to GiffGaff for the £12/month deal and I couldn't be happier. I get to use Google Music all I want (I have over 19,000 songs in my collection so google music is the only practical way of accessing all of them on the move) and I don't have to worry about getting shafted with data charges. They also say they don't allow tethering (like all networks) but I've not had any trouble tethering my Nexus 7 via bluetooth when out and about, which is also a bonus. It piggybacks off the O2 network (in fact, my phone says O2 on the screen instead of GiffGaff), so if you get good O2 signal where you are GiffGaff is probably your best choice for sim-only network.

Oooo, I am currently with O2 and network coverage is fine where I am! Thanks chaps, looks like GiffGaff will be the network of choice then. :)

 

Even at £12 a month, it will still save me £25 every month:)

 

Don't 02 do a sim plan or am I thinking of the Pay as you go where they keep doubling what you get ( seen the advert on telly )

The costs of O2's simplicity sims don't even come close to what gift gaff charge. Even when I canceled with O2 and said I found a sim only deal, the operator said "I bet it's with GiffGaff" and immediately offered me a PAC code. They just can't compete in the sim only world.

I was going to move to GiffGaff but when I asked for a PAC code Vodafone matched GiffGaff - the £10 a month deal. I think I get something like 600 minutes 500mb data and unlimited texts.

Giffgaff's ok but their reliability isn't up to the same levels at the other operators. Twice in the last couple of years they've had days of no calls for anybody. Once was when their basement room that contained the billing system flooded; can't remember what the other time was. If you can live with that, they're fine.

T mobile have some great deals too at the moment, in effect their full monty plans but sim only. I was tempted but had to replace my Desire.

Well, I went with GiffGaff in the end and I took out their £12 goody bag (250 mins, unlimited texts, unlimited data) and am chuffed to bits. Initially, I had some minor issues getting the data working and had to delete all my APN's and fiddle about adding new ones, however after that, it's was good. Signal is spot on (as I would expect) and have no issues with playing music through Google Music. Even got it set to always play high quality mode too, and it works a treat. :)
