Labeling PC's - What do you use?

Need to re label all our PC's in the summer and just wondering what you use, have usually just used paper labels but they seem to just peel off these days so needing somthing a little more robust. I must be able to print on to them and thats about it, not bothered about any school names pre printed on etc.

I name all workstations, then use Visio to create a room plan.

 

Laminate 1 for the wall, and store on a shared folder for convenience.

We've gone for some of these and they seem to work quite well. I ended up acid etching all machines with a serial number which consisted of postcode of school, asset number and date of arrival at the school.

 

So it looked like HP56QR003452304JAN2012.

 

Kept a spreadsheet of what was where and left it like that.

We use a brother p touch printer to print our serial numbers as bar codes and also we print the computer name to stick on the top of the PC plus we put one on the back.

we don't actually label them with a name, but we use School Asset Manager | The Solution to Better Asset Management who provide us with a sticker for the machines with a QR code. All managed by an app and and online database. We then write in UV paint the serial number and the school on the machine.

But if you use UV paint or acid then the warranty is no longer valid, according to our reseller?

The no-peel labels look awful when the kids try to pick them off though.

We have a policy of "If you don't tell me which computer/user it is, I'm not fixing it."

All our PC's are labelled externally with the asset number using RS sticky labels. We also use BGInfo on every desktop which displays PC Name, Asset Number, Serial Number, Username, Login time and OS version (still a few XP machines left...) as the wallpaper.

 

Teachers or students tend to just report the asset number (1234) if a job is raised, we use GLPI to keep track of whats where from that point forward.

We get our PCs etched by the reseller (Stone) and we stick on a metallic sticker with an asset number and barcode towards the rear of the PC. The staff (mostly) know to report this number to us and for the most part the stickers stay intact. There is the occasional one peeled off but surprisingly few. That could be because we keep them relatively out of the way I guess.

I have never once had a problem with Acid Etching a PC being sent back. We keep the machine anyway, plus we know if all they have done is change the HDD into a new machine or changed what we need them to change.

just use the personalised asset sticker,

 

we do have some laptops that also have a name sticker on them but this is usually the year and what number they are for examplae number 3 in year 6 would be YR63. these labels are just made using a label machine.
