Dell Optiplex 3010 - Memory Upgrade

Hi,

 

Does anyone know if their would be any reason why we couldn't upgrade our memory from 8Gb to 16Gb in one of our Dell Optiplex 3010 machines... we use it as a VM and need to allocate more memory. They only have two memory slots available so we were going to go for 2x8Gb from Overclockers but have tried Crucial and another site which reported we could only have a maximum of 8Gb.

Best to check with Dell, Might be limit set on the motherboard or limited due to bios. (upgradable)

Ah OK. I posted that because I though, perhaps, you might not have the handbook to hand.

Sometimes, those limits are reached through testing such as if 8GB sticks were not available at the time of manufacture. I have managed to upgrade machines well beyond the listed maximum, but there's no guarantee.

I think it maybe worth a punt to see if it works or not... worst case we can use the 8Gb sticks in two other machines and swap out the 4Gb sticks into other machines so they're on 8Gb as well.

Same here, 16gb is detected and is usable. Used 2x 8gb ddr3 1600 gskill ares cl9 and cl10 modules.

download and install the memory check software which will tell you exactly what you need.

+1 on the GSkill modules. I just replaced the two supplied 4GB Samsung DIMMs with a pair of these GSkill 8GB ones from NewEgg. My Optiplex 3010 booted right up and I'm happy. This is after 3 separate Dell "technicians" said that 8GB was the max memory possible for the 3010.

Necrothread revival, I can confirm this works with other 8GB DDR3 1600 sticks, we got a deal on some 8GB 2-Power sticks and refreshed all our Maths department machines as they like to have multiple copies of SMART Notebook 16 open (which eats memory).
