Disease Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Wonder Why, is some scandal about to rock the Catholic Church to it's foundations, maybe NASA is about to announce something that will hit religion hard? Interesting
Andrew_C Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Wonder Why, is some scandal about to rock the Catholic Church to it's foundations,Sorry; have you been living under a rock? What more scandalous thing can there be than the deliberate, top level, cover up of wide spread kiddie fiddling in the catholic church?
Disease Posted February 11, 2013 Author Posted February 11, 2013 Sorry; have you been living under a rock? What more scandalous thing can there be than the deliberate, top level, cover up of wide spread kiddie fiddling in the catholic church? I know about all that, that has been going on longer than anything, I am thinking there may be something new.
6Foot2 Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Wonder Why,... Link: BBC News - Pope Benedict XVI in shock resignation After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry... Seems like a reasonable explanation: He is 85. Not saying there isn't a major scandal for the church about to break [over and above that we are already aware of] Time will tell I guess?
hardtailstar Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 the bloke is 85, I wouldnt want to be in his position at that age, no matter how fit I was.
Robz Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 I know about all that, that has been going on longer than anything, I am thinking there may be something new. Me too, some new scandal either involving him or the church, his resignation may just be to try and prevent any such scandal becoming public knowledge. Or he may just be getting old and has the wisdom to pass his job onto someone younger.
witch Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Or he may just be getting old and has the wisdom to pass his job onto someone younger. That is what he is saying and at 85 I think he may well be right. If so then he is doing the right thing.
HaleStorm Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 To be fair, the guy was a member of the Hitler youth, which I will admit he might have had no choice over, but he has helped to cover up a lot of "issues" within the catholic church such as the child molestation accusations. It wouldn't surprise me if there was something else just as damning.
localzuk Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 I reckon he's gonna come out and say he's now an atheist... 2
CyberNerd Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 It's interesting that we (me included) assume there must be some sort of new scandal, I guess that we are so used to it now...
HaleStorm Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 It would be hilarious if his last official words as pope were "the cake is a lie"
Arthur Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Or he may just be getting old and has the wisdom to pass his job onto someone younger. By younger, you mean someone in their 70's?
Disease Posted February 11, 2013 Author Posted February 11, 2013 But surely being Pope is a calling you have been chosen by God himself is the belief, not something you just resign, it's not happened for over 600 years.
laserblazer Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 The reason is that they have discovered the original job description for priests that has been corrupted through centuries of copying. What it actually says is "Priests are required to celebrate Mass" and not "Priests are required to be celibate to perform Mass" The Pope doesn't want to be the one to explain.
Theblacksheep Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 There's been older Popes and they usually die in the job .... Pope John 2 wasn't allowed to resign despite bad health.
gshaw Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 We're in trouble now, the prophecy of the last Pope will soon be upon us... Prophecy of the Popes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gatt Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Point I keep making here is the news are bigging this up as him resigning, when in actual fact he is stepping down due to old age - thereby this means he is "retiring"...
localzuk Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Point I keep making here is the news are bigging this up as him resigning, when in actual fact he is stepping down due to old age - thereby this means he is "retiring"... Popes don't normally 'retire' though. They die of old age, in post. ie. You don't normally retire from being the hand of God...
HaleStorm Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Popes don't normally 'retire' though. They die of old age, in post. ie. You don't normally retire from being the hand of God... Correct its like being "hand of the king" where you normally get murdered...just like poor old Sean Bean
X-13 Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 You don't normally retire from being the hand of God... Surely, as the "hand of God", he can do what he likes? [Providing he follows the rules laid down by said God.]
E_G_R2 Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Just because he's retiring dosn't mean to say he stops serving god?
localzuk Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 (edited) Just because he's retiring dosn't mean to say he stops serving god? Yeah it does. He'll be off down the bingo hall this afternoon... You'll see the headlines "Ex Pope seen in Mecca" Edited February 11, 2013 by localzuk 2
featured_spectre Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 JPII was going even on his deathbed, delivering Sunday Sermons from the balcony etc and he was horrendously ill, and despite dying at a younger age than the current pope, he did the job well. The post is for the remainder of your life, not just for a few years.
X-13 Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 The post is for the remainder of your life, not just for a few years. Garunteed job for life? How do I apply? 1
Love_Sausage Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 A Pope is for life, not just for Christmas
