[sims] reason 0!!!!!

We are running sims in our school i dont know why we bother with it so many errors worst program ever but the problem is

we keep on getting this reason 0 does anyone know what it mean please we are kind of confussed now

More often than not Reason 0 is an incorrect mapping in your Connect.ini

 

Hardly the fault of SIMS.

Reason 0 can also be incorrect password or network drive not present - is your connect.ini pointing to the right drive? Do your workstations have the right drives mapped?

I've also known reason 0 to be the SQL service stopped. I think overall reason 0 is 'can not connect to database' for any of the reasons above.

when you say you keep getting it, is it all the time? only recently? since you did something e.g. upgrade or reboot? is it certain machines?

 

can you log in on the server?

I believe reason 0 can also mean no printer is installed.

well it is not password because it works on other workstations i will check the ini file

try detaching and reattaching the DB

Just reinstall it on that workstation, I gave up trying diagnose anything beyond the s drive not being mapped.

There are so many issues that cause Reason 0.

 

Incorrect connect.ini, problems with mapped network drives, database not upgraded successfully, SQL Services issue, there is something wrong with the users login... to list a few.

We had the same error after we upgrade SQL from 2005 to 2008.

I changed the conect.ini file to look at \SIMS2008 instead of \SIMS2005

There are 9 possible fixes for Reason 0. These are due to:

1. Incorrect setup of SQL

2. Incorrect connection file

3. Unfinished upgrade (indicated)

4. Incorrect setup of SQL

5. Insufficient disk space

6. Firewall

7. SQL not running

8. TCP/IP problems

9. SQL connection.

This is how I have managed to fix a reason 0 error before.

 

Reason 0 Fix

 

Take a backup using SQL Sesrver management Studio

 

Paste the following into the query windows and then click execute

 

use sims

go

exec sims.db_p_install

exec sims.db_p_grant

Just to throw another cause of reason 0 into the pot, we are currently having problems (only in the last 2 weeks) where our corporately provided AV (eTrust) is preventing the openning of files in the S:\SIMS\Setups folder to return the file version number to SIMSLOAD to see if an update is required. This is not a SIMS problem, but a problem in SIMS caused by another product.

We can show this by seeing how long File explorer takes to display the file version.

I'm sure somewhere in the recommended setup, you are supposed to exclude the S folder from AV checks. There's definitely a list of certain file extensions that should be excluded if not the entire drive.

 

I've often had this issue when hacking around with test servers, and it can be due to mismatch between password and username from restoring the wrong file to the server. The detach / reattach thing or those sql scripts mentioned earlier can sometimes fix that.

Perhaps a SIMS error message thread should started, as most of the above is of no use to the OP.

 

Check connect,ini, SQL Engine, shared drive. 3 simple checks, if it's none of those dig a bit deeper, it really is very simple 99.9% of cases and takes no more than 2 minutes as opposed to 48hrs discussing how the error would be better worded. I'm off, I have offered the OP help off-thread.

It does have a validating prefix 'I believe'.

There's no way to vet every post for accuracy. It's up to the reader to determine how useful the advice is and make their own judgement.
