sippo Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Is anyone else receiving a lot of SPAM recently. No not the tinned type. Our puremessage is picking up, on average, 500 a day. Some still get through though. Really annoying.
synaesthesia Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Yeah, it's just getting worse and worse. Thankfully Office365 is picking up the vast majority but it does making checking through the quarantine for false positives a bit labourious. One of the worst contributing factors is typically publicly available addresses on websites; we have a few, and you can always easily see the same spam email going through to just those few users (well, trying to).
CAM Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 There's been some rather prevalent malware using E-Mail to spread itself over the net which doesn't help. Most of my spam consists of a dodgy ZIP or EXE file and badly written attempts to make me open it.
bossman Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Odd one or 2, the invoice ones but I have tightened our spam filters until they are just on the limit and warned the staff, can't really do any more, one of the staff over Christmas accidentally opened one of these invoice's which quickly sent her details to a spam server in Africa which used her account to send 21000 spam e-mails in just under 6 hours. Problem was this member of staff didn't tell me and it took me 3 days to get our mail server un-blacklisted from all the players and 2 which were from Canada who seem to have a very tight grip on advertising spam and blacklisted us as "truncated" and "lashbacked", it seems to be getting worse with e-mail I feel and speaking to one or two other IT pro's that people are quite regularly being blacklisted. Hey ho! what a wonderful world we live in!
unixman_again Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 We are too. Typical examples Payment request of 1917.53 (14 JAN 2015) , Invoice (from Hexis), etc. Sophos is marking them as spam but forwarding them on to the recipient rather than squirreling them off.
localzuk Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Yeah, there's been a definite increase in malware spam - UPS, aquaid, invoices etc...
X-13 Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Yeah, there's been a definite increase in malware spam - UPS, aquaid, invoices etc... Seems Christmas was expensive this year for the spammers.
davyboi Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 The first thing that popped into my head when I saw this title was SPAM EGG CHIPS AND SPAM, and python was way before my time!
sippo Posted January 15, 2015 Author Posted January 15, 2015 I've emailed staff to delete ANY emails they don't know the sender - standard protocol. But yet they still open the document that is attached. Argh!
bossman Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 The bad file types ie exe's are filtered to quarantine and send a message to the end user hehe! I usually get the message forwarded to me saying that they are "frightened to read it haha!" dopey or what? Or they will ask "Am I infected?" makes me cry with laughter
X-13 Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Or they will ask "Am I infected?" makes me cry with laughter "That's something you should ask your doctor about." 1
kearton Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 We are too. Typical examples Payment request of 1917.53 (14 JAN 2015) , Invoice (from Hexis), etc. Sophos is marking them as spam but forwarding them on to the recipient rather than squirreling them off. Same here... dozens of the "Payment request" ones with .doc and .xls attachments. I've forwarded copies to ICT4C (FYI @mwalpole) so hopefully they and/or YHGfL can block them upstream of us
Sylv3r Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 We are seeing a lot of the common ones here too - invoices, .zip files, word or excel documents with macros etc. We use SmooZap for our SPAM filtering have have the SPAM level pretty high but are still suffering from mail getting through. We are now actively blocking the domain on our Smoothwall box, and sending the e-mail plus headers in a text file to [email protected] which will hopefully start resolving our issues - if other Smoothwall customers who use SmoothZap could follow suit hopefully we will see a reduction in messages through everybody contributing.
mwalpole Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Hi, Only just seen this thread, yes please send them to us Kearton, we can block them before they get to schools who use us for mail relay. Kind regards Marc
