You see rep power? That's how many rep points you can give or take away in a single "repping".

When you're new it's 0 so they can't alter your rep.

As you get more rep, your rep power increases. Some forums have a minimum post count you must be above to get rep power as well, I don't know if this one does.

For instance, I have 2 rep points, but 10 rep power, which means I can give any of you 10 extra rep points for a good post, or take 10 away for a bad.

It depends on how the forums are configured. But in a default vBulletin install anyone with 'rep power' can add positive or negative reputation to anyone else.

not really because i think this will cut down the stupid pointless posts that keeps popping up. I personaly really like the idea :)

It puts power in the hands of the members. If you think someone deserves a positive reputation then reward them for the posts they make. They, in turn, have more power to reward others who make good posts.

If you don't think they are any good then do not reward them, or if you think they are talking tripe then remove rep.

Those with the high reps will have them because *you* think that they are the cream of the crop.

In some forums this cuts down on those who just want to push up their post count.

A word of warning about post counts ... don't try to catch up with Geoff ... he is actually a supercomputer based at a secret location and can post the correct information faster then you can say ... erm ... a very long word! Rumour has it that he makes up 1/4 of Google's server farms, but I think he is secretly the Facebook system!

/me runs ... very fast!!! :D

Is he also the Stig?

I like the idea of Rep points. I know there is a chance they'll get out of hand but I think we have to try them. :) But please can we have one each to get us started. :)

To be honest I think that the whole rep thing is stupid. It is all to easy to abuse a system like this and just go around giving people negative points just because you do like the person or because you do not agree with what they said. Also we should all have the right to see who has given us rep points, especially negative as we can then respond to it accordingly.

I believe the admins have fairly fine grained control how the rep system behaves. Including disabling negative rep and allowing/disabling the display of various information related to rep.

I think it's an excellent system and that Geoff and GrumbleDook are the most awesome people ever... (in this thread)

:)

Yay!

PS. You're awesome too...

The rep system seems good to me, those who post good info will be repped and therfore will be shown to be those "in the know".

As for

well, what are we; mature adults or immature children? I'm sure the majority of us are above negative-repping someone just as we don't like what they've posted.

I have to disagree with you there. Their has been a lot of flaming, personal attacks and immature behaviour on the forums in recent months and I don't think that this will go away overnight. I suggest that you go and read some of the old threads to see how people have behaved on here.

True, but the rep system could actually help with that. If someone is being flamey, then neg rep can be assigned, and if someone is getting a lot of bad rep (which the admin's will see) they can look into it easier and deal with it.

This is very true, it can be difficult sometimes for us to decide just how much a particular member is causing grief... there's 5000 of you to keep an eye on!

As long as the system is used as intended it is pretty much self policing. It is also flagged up if somebody receives a particularly bad rep or if somebody is trying to abuse the system.

You should look at it more as a reward for receiving good advice than a way of belittling others.

Well I will reserve judgement on this for the time being......
