Symantec Endpoint Protection duplicate client hardware ID
meastaugh1 replied to Duke5A's topic in Enterprise Software
Did you run ClientSideClonePrepTool before sysprep? This tool will generalise the SEP install and avoid these duplicate ID issues. www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO54706 -
[FROG] Launch executable from a hyperlink
meastaugh1 replied to eddyc's topic in Virtual Learning Platforms
I was asked to provide a similar shortcut to SIMS from sharepoint a few years ago. If the suggested CMD solution doesn't work, then I suggest LaunchinIE -
We used to have several of these on our floor standing projectors. As already suggested, students would regularly set them off, although I appreciate this is likely to be less common on ceiling mounts. I think money would be better spent on clamps or secure cages.

While it would be possible to do as you suggest, I was thinking more along the lines of a custom list with columns for each sport's grade and textual comment, perhaps with a row per student, per year. The potential problems with using spreadsheets in a document library is that the name field has to be unique and teachers will have to open each individual file to review. A custom list will show all student records in the browser or can be exported to spreadsheet. The other option is to setup a survey.

We've been asked to do similar for PE in sharepoint in the past. I created a list and assigned students permission to add/edit items but not permission to add or modify list views. Assign teachers Design permission. Modify the All Items public view and filter for [me] on the Created By column. Show teachers how to create personal list views without the filter. I'd also be inclined to enable content approval where students will be creating the items. If you will be creating a part populated list (with name, year/region group etc) then add a username column and filter on that instead of Created By. I appreciate there are more secure ways of doing it in sharepoint, but the above can all be done through the web interface.

I'd be inclined to try model-specific drivers as I've found that UPD doesn't work with some models, regardless of what HP might claim (OJ8000, k8600, CLJ2605). If you can't find them on HP's site or in Windows, try downloading from MS catalog site.

Software Restriction Policies (SRS)
meastaugh1 replied to purkleturkle's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
Perhaps it's not being blocked because a zip file is opened rather than executed? In my experience, there may be one or two poorly thought out mini-application's that self-extract to the user's temp folder and then execute from there. You will be able to add explicit hash rules to allow these executables to run. -
Software Restriction Policies (SRS)
meastaugh1 replied to purkleturkle's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
The reason you were unable to block executables from running within a zip file, is because Windows extracts the executable to the user's temporary folder then executes them there. A path rule to disallow %Userprofiles%\Local Settings\temp should do it. -

Smartboard being interactive on wrong screen!
meastaugh1 replied to Hulbert99's topic in AV and Multimedia Related
Strange. I've just double-checked and it does work here: cursor and ink, although I only have it setup on one Windows 7 computer in extended mode. The primary screen is the monitor, the projector is secondary. It's an Intel DG35EC mainboard with a cheap graphics card: Geforce 210. I've included screenshots of the smart configuration, but I don't think I changed anything there: -
Smartboard being interactive on wrong screen!
meastaugh1 replied to Hulbert99's topic in AV and Multimedia Related
Have you oriented the board and pressed space to ensure the orient screen appears on the IWB? -
Not much help, but I've had similar problems with XP on the DQ57TM. I believe switching on the projector before Windows started caused clone mode to switch off. Once I upgraded to Windows 7, cloning works consistently.

I don't think anyone is saying that. I can't imagine why simsload.exe can't run a Windows Installer upgrade, so the experience for unmanaged environments (ie primary) is almost the same as it is at the moment. Capita already test against AD for ADP, so I would hope it shouldn't be too much of an ask.

Remote shutdown computers that are logged off
meastaugh1 replied to has's topic in How do you do....it?
BeyondExec will do what you asked for. For instance this command will shutdown all computers listed in the file room1.txt that are not logged on. beyondexec.exe -g room1.txt -d Shutdown -l 1 -f -n Computer names in the text file should each be on a separate line. -
Hi, Does the board beep when interwrite starts up? Is it connected via a serial cable? have you tried a different computer? Are you saying that both green LEDs are on all the time? As far as I recall one should indicate power and the other contact between the board and pen. So if the latter is on all the time, it sounds like a short of some kind. I think the box is attached to the board with a ribbon cable or two, should you want to try swapping it with one from a working board (at your own risk).

No, you just need a plain old MSI table editor, such as Orca or InstEd It. Specifying the properties at the command line (as documented) is just as valid as using a transform file. I don't recommend you modify the registry directly for anything other than testing. The reason being that at some point Windows Installer will likely reset the values to those specified in the MSI/MST. Yes, I believe we did initially use a timeout of 45 seconds, then later increased it to one minute, then two, because a timeout that short is particularly frustrating for end-users, as you might imagine. Thanks for the suggestions, but tbh further development in unlikely. There have been no changes since it was created > five years ago. I believe it checks every 1 second.

sorry for late reply, only just noticed your message. will try to send you a link later today. It was created by one of my former colleagues.

Yes, we bought Easyreg (integrates with SIMS lesson Monitor) and Easylock (access control) three years ago. Overall experience hasn't been fantastic, but with Easytrace/AMI's support, and me spending a significant amount of time gathering data, diagnosing etc, it is now mostly a working system. Many of our early problems were related to (or possibly just more easily apparent) the access control system; these were resolved by assigning the server more resources, ensuring the readers are on a VLAN separate from the main network and flashing the readers with the latest firmware. We had more problems when we added eight more readers to the system as part of a refurb last year (6 access control, 2 reg). I found that when new readers were connected to our most common PoE switch (HP 2600-8PWR) they would occassionally drop packets, which is a particularly bad thing on a system that uses UDP to transmit data, with nothing on top to verify transmission. Weirdly, this problem isn't apparent on our more recent HP swithes (E2615-8POE). Our most recent issue is that since the August update (to make it compatible with SIMS 7.140 - .net4), the system seems to be transferring swipes from all our readers, including access control, to SIMS, resulting in students being marked in registers when they shouldn't be. I logged this issue last week and it's now been escalated to development. What's your setup? Have they used the Gemini X1010IP? If so, what are you using to power them? Are the readers dropping packets? Are your readers on a VLAN isolated from lost of broadcast traffic? You could query the SQL database to see/verify what Easytrace is capturing.

I went with a OneLan solution in the end (with TV tuner). Expensive and works well. -
Since deploying Windows 7, we've noticed that EPR can take a long time between clicking reset and the password change confirmation coming back (10-60 seconds). Have you seen this issue before?

Detect local printer, check if connected, use as default if connected?
meastaugh1 replied to pete's topic in Windows
I don't think this option in GPP works. http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-server-2008/80996-gpp-local-printer-problem.html I suggest you use a login script to compliment GPP that will search for printers with USB (or whatever) in the port name and set it as default. -
we have a monitoring process that runs in the background that will invoke a screen lock after a period of administrator-defined inactivity only when processes such as pulsar.exe are running. The purpose is to reduce the risk when staff leave SIMS logged on and to encourage them to close it when not in use.
-
I'be found this feature doesn't work either. I worked around it by adding a login script that sets any local printers as default. This works for me as we have quite a few users with local printers, but no more than one each. If your users had multiple local "printers", then you'd need something more precise, such as that already suggested.
