  1. I found this helpful: The Angry Technician’s Guide to Managing Windows 7, you Idiots « The Angry Technician
  2. I contacted Capita to enquire about licensing costs associated with academy conversion last month. Assuming we own the licence, I was told if we retained our DofE number the school could novate the licence, but a change of DofE number would result in SIMS having to be re-licensed. Is this advice still valid?
  3. I've allocated the new version to a room and it's working fine with read-only permission now, thanks.
  4. That's the one, new version retrieves reg values, old version generates the crash error.
  5. Looks good to me. Regedit screenshot below. Thanks for your perseverance.
  6. Hi Steve, I've tried it on XP this morning to ensure it's not a Win7 thing, I get the same problem on both OS. I've included a screenshot of the reg table from the MSI I am using to deploy. If I give everyone Full Control, the error goes away. If I withdraw that permission, the error comes back.

  8. Thanks for the quick reply. I take your points about the systray password field and encryption. I get the .net error regardless of whether the values are already created. It will only seem to launch if the user (student) has write access to the EduLock key.
  9. Looks good, just a few suggesstions/questions: When you right click the sys tray icon, did you intend for this password field to still show white text on a white background, as opposed to it being a proper password field? I can understand why you might do this while developing, as you can highlight to see what has been written. Any chance this can run be made to run as a service, so that the process can be made to re-start if it crashes? It's only happened once while testing it. The passwords are currently stored in plain text in the registry, have you considered encyrpting? Is there a good reason for students to need to write to the registry in order for the app to run? Thanks
  10. Have you considered MDT2010? This will prompt for a computer name at the start of the installation process.
  11. @CyBeRkId2002 on the whole it's fine. The only significant issue is that it can take a few more seconds than I'd like when a user logs on to a computer for the first time. This is because there seemed to be problems with logging on to a vanilla workstation with a CC3 profile, so until migration of the desktops is complete, I've set the vanilla desktops to use local profiles. No CC3 specific issues with WSUS or WDS that I can recall, as long as you've got them installed on separate (physical or virtual) servers. The only issue I've come up against, where the the RM DC GPO is the cause, is when I setup a vanilla terminal server and placed the server in the Servers - No Inheritance OU, as this still has the RM DC GPO linked to it. This caused a problem because this policy sets permissions on explorer.exe to only allow adminitrators access to this file (to prevent non-admins logging on to servers). This was fixed by changing the GPO and would only affect you if you're setting up a TS. Let me know if you've got any more specific questions and I'll try to help/advise.
  12. Michael, I am pursuing a similar CC3 exit path to the one you suggest. The majority of our desktops are now running vanilla XP with WSUS for updates and WDS for OS deployment. We are just about to start pushing out Win7 with MDT2010. We have setup new OUs at the root and applied GPOs with loopback enabled, allowing us to slowly transition away from C3. I'm still to finalise a plan for the servers but my current thinking is to add some 2008r2 DCs and transfer across FSMO, DHCP, DNS etc then demote the old RM DCs to member file servers, then remove/disable CC3 server components.
  13. We were moved across in December, the migrartion was relatively hassle-free. Updata have mirrored the Virgin setup in terms of IP addressing and (proxy) names so you have little to reconfigure on site. New VPN connection credentials and PCFs had to be distributed, and any third party VPN connections had to be reapplied for (housekeeping exercise). Since April, when the Fortigate licences and definitions expired, we've not had much local granular control over the web-filtering, although Updata are in the process of piloting/deploying the element of Netsweeper (Fortigate's replacement) which will allow schools some control over their filtering (WF1-5 policies). The schools netsweeper interface is very simple, the loss of some finer level of control that you might be used to with a Fortigate box probably comes at a cost of that level of simplicity, but that's no surprise. We've had at least one loss of internet connectivity. This happened not long after we were migrated and was apparently because there was a problem with one of the datacentres, and the system to fail-over to the second data centre hadn't worked. Other than that, it's been fine though. Many of the first line helpdesk staff that were on the Virgin helpdesk are now on the SITSS helpdesk (for Updata). Since the HGfL helpdesk is now part of SITSS, this means that non-critical issues can be logged via their web-based helpdesk. Did you have anything in particular in mind?
  14. I have a Canon IP3500 that has started reporting that the magenta and yellow inks are not installed in the correct position. The ink LEDs flash as though the inks were empty, which they're not, and the print driver reports: "An ink tank is not installed in the correct position. Confirm that the following ink tank is installed in the appropriate position. Magenta Yellow ." I have swapped all the inks and the printhead with another IP3500 and the problem is still apparent on this printer. The contacts in the printer that touch the ink chips look fine. Is there anything else I can do?
  15. That's great, thanks Mike.
  16. I guess we were just lucky to not have the remnants of the old version stuck in our registry.
  17. I saw your message about the lost code, I didn't realise the missing y13 (upper sixth form) was a known issue, that's fine. Thanks for getting back so quickly.
  18. Any idea why the sixth form button returns all 04 and 05 students in v1, but only 05 students in v2? Thanks
  19. Fortinet currently rate this address as Web Translation, which I assume you haven't filtered as a category. To block a URL immediately, you can re-rate in a category that you are blocking. You can do this locally on the box by logging into the web interface, selecting UTM, Web Filter, then select the Local Ratings tab. Select Create New, enter the URL and select the category you want to rate the site as (eg Potentially Liable>Proxy Avoidance). This should work assuming that you have setup your protection profile to block the Proxy Avoidance category). Menu options may be slighly different dependent upon your firwmare version. You can also request Fortinet to re-evaluate a URL's rating here: FortiGuard | Web Filtering
  20. I deployed this version and the previous one using Edexcel's MSI in Group Policy Software Installation. No tweaking, besides the datapath required.
  21. Our Macromedia 8 Suite site licence specifies xxx number of installations allowed in school and yyy number of installations on teacher's personal computers, is there nothing similar on the MX2004 certificate?
  22. That should be fne as long as none of the settings you configure in the MSI are specififed in the transform, as the settings in the transform would take precedence when applied. I prefer to make my changes in a transform so I'm not touching the vendor's MSI. The Apply Transform option in Orca is used to open a transform for viewing/editing, it does not commit the contents of the transform to the MSI (that seems to be how you were using it from the description above). The transform is applied over the MSI at install-time, either using the TRANSFORMS property with msiexec.exe, or the Modifications tab in GPO Software Installation. I don't have the jre????.mst in the English version of Java RE. Perhaps Sun have supplied this with all non-English distributions to localise the installer language? Can you be more specific how you are testing the MSI and expecting it to install silently? As I mentioned, just double clicking the MSI won't run the installer silently, nor will it apply any transforms. Recent Java installers have included the necessary actions to remove previous version of Java. Theoretically you should be able to remove the old version's package from the GPO and select not to uninstall, but it would be worth testing that works as expected. I deployed this upgrade to all computers covered by the policy at once, so I selected the old version to uninstall immediately, then added in the new version package. If you are deploying it as a test to one computer, or are deploying the upgrade in batches, then I guess it would make sense to use the Upgrade Tab in Group Policy.
  23. I deployed Update 23 a couple of weeks ago. I'm surprised your configuration didn't work. How were you launching to test it? You know that for an MSI to install silently while you are logged on, you need to run the command msiexec /i %MSILOCATIONANDFILENAME% /qn. Substitute /qb for /qn if you just want to see a progress bar for installation, with no prompt. I grabbed the MSI, CAB and MST. Modified the MST to apply similar settings (disable systray, autoupdate etc). This deployed fine in GPO.
  24. Can anyone recommend a cheap source for refurbished/second use JetDirect cards, other than ebay? My usual supplier is having difficulty sourcing them. Thanks.
  25. Is it possible to embed live streamed BBC News (or failing that, some other news) in Xibo with subtitles? Having searched the forums, I understand that the embedding BBC news bit shouldn't be a problem, but I can't seem to find anything with subtitles. Will I need receive a signal using a TV tuner in order to get the subtitles? Thanks
