  1. Governors seek to appoint a well qualified, committed and enthusiastic IT Support Officer to join our support team. Salary Range: N6 (currently £26,446 to £29,174) Contract Type: Permanent, 52/52 Hours: 37 hours per week worked over 5 days, Monday to Friday Start Date: July 2022 PM me for details or if you'd like a chat about this post. It's a lovely school and I've really enjoyed my first few months here.
  2. As @Koldov said, that's regedit locally on your print server; we didn't need to apply it to our clients for our printing to come back. One other thing to note is for the group policy mentioned: Computer Config>Preferences>Windows Settings>Registry>New reg policy: RestrictDriverInstallationToAdministrators. Action: Create Hive: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Key path: SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Printers\PointandPrint Value name: REG_DWORD Value data: 0x0 (0) I pretty much use Action:update in cases like this, as it will create the entry if it's not there and update with any changes if it is there.
  3. Have you tried this one? Managing deployment of Printer RPC binding changes for CVE-2021-1678 That was the final piece in the jigsaw for us, may be worth a look at.

  6. Forgive me for posting this one (and you have my symapthies if you've had a 'mare today - we had loads of hassle last year) but we've had no issues this morning. This is partly due, I'm sure, to having only five candidates, but I think it was mainly because we used the option to download the tests yesterday. Our exams officer specified a seating plan and we used a generic login rather than user specific. Using each candidates's keycode we downloaded the test to their machine yesterday and got them to sit in the correct seats this morning. I was a bit worry about the upload, but this completed without issue, thankfully. The invigilator dashboard was never very usable though. I guess this method isn't scalable if you've got more than a handful of candidates, but if you've got any exams tomorrow I'd recommend giving it try.
  7. Don't forget that Sibelius comes with a fairly large orchestral sound library. That's a hurdle that might have to be overcome with a move to musescore if they like the Sibelius sounds.
  8. This process just validates the previous updates on the server, allowing you to check for updates from the workstation. It may also be worth reinstalling the agent too, but it shouldn't need to find any new updates for the problem to be fixed. Edit: the check for updates has to be made from the settings page rather than the upgrades tab:
  9. It's an issue we've come across too. The solution is here, and involves running a check for updates from capita in solus. Worked for us, but needed to be rerun a few times when we came across other workstations with the problem. It's also worth checking for updates further back than the default -there's a drop down that does that.
  10. Open source video editor Shotcut has got audio normalisation; may be worth a look. edit: Be careful with Normalisation, as it boosts *all* audio, including hiss and room noise.
  11. Any idea on budget? We use vmix to do this sort of thing, currently with an usb hdmi capture dongle attached to a c£300 Canon camcorder, but if you could afford to throw one of these you'd be much better off. We've held off on buying the extra hardware so far because we're not doing assemblies in any form at the moment. Have a look for things that can use NDI to stream and you can pipe video around your lan with ease.
  12. We've got 80 Unifi APs across our secondary site. They've been pretty much faultless so far; Staff and 6th form have access for personal devices, and there are around 200 curriculum laptops too. Our two primary schools have it as well, with 60 ipads/30 laptops/staff access in one, and 30 ipads and staff access at the other.
  13. Check whether a NIC is dropping on the smoothwall box. A couple of years ago we had a very similar set of symptoms over the course of a few weeks. It turned out to be a failed upgrade of the driver on one of the NICs; it looked to all intents and purposes that someone was pulling the cable and immediately replacing it. Pings would find the box but dropped packets were still happening. I eventually found this in the Kernel log: Sep 20 14:04:12 smoothwall Kernel [ 9764.209964] e1000e: ethE NIC Link is Down Sep 20 14:04:12 smoothwall Kernel [ 9764.277459] bonding: bond0: link status definitely down for interface ethE, disabling it Sep 20 14:04:12 smoothwall Kernel [ 9764.277462] bonding: bond0: making interface ethC the new active one Sep 20 14:04:12 smoothwall Kernel [ 9764.326012] e1000e: ethC NIC Link is Down Sep 20 14:04:12 smoothwall Kernel [ 9764.377500] bonding: bond0: link status definitely down for interface ethC, disabling it Sep 20 14:04:12 smoothwall Kernel [ 9764.377784] bonding: bond0: now running without any active interface! Sep 20 14:04:15 smoothwall Kernel [ 9767.552037] e1000e: ethC NIC Link is Up 1000 Mbps Full Duplex, Flow Control: None Sep 20 14:04:15 smoothwall Kernel [ 9767.578988] bonding: bond0: link status definitely up for interface ethC, 1000 Mbps full duplex Smoothwall support dialled in and reverted the driver. We moved to sophos a few weeks later. Chris
  14. We used the method djm968 mentioned last summer and it worked very well indeed. The move speed and logging was great and it handles the cutover and retirement of the old server gracefully as well.
  15. Sophos was expensive, but given that we'd had a half term of trouble with smoothwall the senior team gave us the green light. Sophos is much easier to navigate and manage. Support has been great and they helped us get a High Availabilty Setup installed in two days of a half term, along with matching all of our smoothwall rules and config. User identification is a bit finicky in comparison with smoothwall, as it requires agents on the DCs, but the positives far outweigh the negatives.
  16. Aye, it's not great.
  17. There currently isn't a way to do it inside Solus. I use PDQ inventory to keep an eye on agent installation; a dynamic collection hunts it down for us.
  18. We had a surprise the other week when a department decided to go for it. First we heard about it was a request for a test appointment. It didn't need much doing for it to work - they want Chrome or Firefox, Mic/Headset and optional webcam. They can't support ssl inspection if you've got that running. URLs were already allowed in Sophos. I'll leave the discussion about the lack of notice, the department in question not listening to our advice about suitable headsets or whether we actually need it to another day...
  19. We're going to do our usual thing with the Autumn release - waiting until the teaching staff are playing Christmas films and snoozing their way through lessons stuffed with mince pies. They'll never notice if it breaks.
  20. Another vote for pockethernet. One of out network installers was in the other day and had left his Fluke. He we was taken aback by how good our pockethernets are.
  21. We cheated and used Windows Admin Center and the Storage Migration Service to get this done over the summer. Worked an absolute treat.
  22. If intel proset is installed (and managing the wifi) it doesn't allow wifi access until after the user is logged on. You can either uninstall the proset management section (be careful not to install the driver at the same time!), or look for the "allow windows to manage my WIFI" option on the tray icon. We had the same issue on some Dell All-in-One machines.
  23. We had a similar issue and it turned out to be a DFSR replication problem on one of our DCs. The GP that set the proxy hadn't been replicated to one of our three DCs (Don't ask -long story) so users had a one in three chance of getting the wrong proxy. The GP result reported things correctly, but the actual files on disk were incorrect. Something along the lines of the problem tackled here.
  24. We moved from smoothwall to a sophos XG550 and haven't looked back. 1600 users on a 1/1Gbps connection and it doesn't break a sweat.
  25. I learned a difficult lesson about this a few years back. A teacher had all their personal photos on an 8 year old hard disk, which started failing. I recovered 3000 or so out of 9000, but that wasn't good enough. "Why can't you get the rest?" he asked. "Because it's f***ed", I replied. This wasn't the reason we fell out though. He stopped talking to me when I refused to install an OS on the same machine on the same hard disk. Never done personal stuff since.
