I had similar issues with logon, but a simple reboot of our 2 dc's rectified this. I stopped deploying printers via vbs months ago - far quicker logon now they are deployed via group policy. The only thing our logon scripts do is map the network drives.

If you can get into cmd and run chkdsk /f that would pick up and try and repair any structure issues off of the hdd. As mentioned previously - an xp live disk would do the trick, or the inbuilt disaster recovery system.

Almost definately a dns issue with the cisco I would have said. Are there any errors in the dns event logs?

What is the resolution set too? I would drop the resolution down a little just to make sure that it is in range if set too high.

Hi Guys, I am in the process of rolling out symantec endpoint protection to all of our servers and client machines. I haven't released this to our sims server as yet, because I seem to remember something about SQL and antivirus, but I cannot for the life of me remeber what this was. Has anyone had any problems installing and running any antivirus on sims servers? Any feedback would be useful. Regards

Hi all, I have an annoying problem that I have been trying to find a work around for the past few hours! I have a master excel spreadsheet with individual spreadsheets linking to the master. The problem is, I don't want users having access to viewing the master sheet, just their own faculty one. If I lock the master to stop public viewing, the individual sheets can't update unless the user enters the password for the master. Is there something silly that I have missed, or is there an easier way to do this? Many thanks in advance.

Would there not be a policy change in group policy that would override this?

Hi all, I am trying to deploy some msi's that I have created using wininstallLE. Now these deploy perfectly fine when I deploy them using my administrator account, but when they are deployed to student machines / logon, windows will come up saying that it is deploying managed software, but once the student logs in, and windows starts to configure the software, I get an error saying that the file extension is invalid. It states the username eg simontest) is not a valid file extension. Students don't have the rights to install software, but this is deployed without this in mind. Could this be a fault with the way that the msi is built or is there another setting in GPO that needs to be changed? I have made amendments to only allow aproved installs, but doesn't seem to have made any difference!

I seem to have got somewhere! I did find some rougue scripts lurking in some of the client machines as someone mentioned earlier in this case. I have successfully managed to deploy the printers through group policy, however, this will not remove existing printer connections. I have been deleting them manually under the users logon, restarting the machine, and voilla, all deployed printers are there! Mr forgetful - have you ensured that the pushprinterconnections.exe is listed in the group policy startup container?

Hi Contink, I thought of that too, and have searched both dc's for another script, and there isn't any. But, there is light at the end of the tunnel. I have been testing this today in one of the IT suites, and it works like a dream, so it would appear that the issue is in one of the offices alone. I shall investigate and let you all know!!!!

Thanks Michael, I have around 30 2015's and they have been working ok. I either use PCL 5 universal drivers or PCL 5e drivers, and have been working almost without fault. Would the spooler service crashing delete the printers? I cannot see anything in the event logs that would suggest this was hapenning. Unless it is something to do with the fact there is no way of specifying that the connections should be persistent, and it's the network that is dropping the connection?

Hi all, I have just had a overhall of printing, by installing a dedicated printserver aswell as adding 15 new network printers. The majority of the printers are HP 2015n's with a handful of Ricoh document stations. 35 printers in total. Originally there were vbs scripts mapping the printers, however these were not working as well as I would have liked, so I decided to deploy the printers through group policy on a 2k3 R2 server. All client machines are XP. I have deployed the printers, and have placed the pushprinterconnection.exe into the startup section of the group policy editor. On the OU that I have been testing this on, the printers ARE deployed, however after a minute or 2 they start disapearing from the client machine. There are no other scripts, as I have removed them all, and I have tried deploying to both user startup and computer startup. Any ideas? This one is really baffling me!!! Help would be greatly appreciated. Kind Regards.

Hello, Are they set as power users on the laptop, or have anything like local admin rights? If they don't, they may not be able to link up to a new network. Give them admin rights on the laptop, then lock them down the following day.

Hello all, I have an issue with regards to printing from RDP on an XP machine to server 2003. The issue is, that although the software or documents are on win 2K3, the user wishes to print on the local (non networked) XP machines printer. Is there an easy fix for this? I have gone through the RDP settings, and have tried to add the printer through 2K3, but with no success. I have come accross this once before, but I cannot remeber what the resolution was! Any ideas would be gratefully received!
