  1. Anyway cheers for the help.
  2. Sorry about that. Man it must have been a long week, hehehe. It shows that when staring at the screen for so long everything just seems the same.
  3. Hello all, It seems like a simple thing to do, right-click on the GPO that you wish to copy and click copy. So where is the copy option. It is not in the list of things to choose from when i right-click. I drill down from the top to the GPO i wish to copy in the left hand window, showing the domain hierarchy and i haven't got the option to copy. This is in the GPMC I have searched and every site i have read says simply right click and copy then paste...but how?
  4. But don't the cals for existing servers cover you for the additional servers as per microsofts sites say so. "I want to have additional servers running Windows 2000 Server or Windows Server 2003 on my SBS 2003 R2 domain. Do my users need CALs to access those servers? A. No. Your SBS 2003 R2 CALs allow your users to access any additional servers running Windows Server software in the domain. You do not need to buy additional CALs for file and print services, or to access additional servers running Exchange Server 2003 or SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition. However, you will need to purchase Terminal Server CALs if you have a server running Terminal Services in application mode on your network." http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsServer2003/sbs/evaluation/faq/licensing.mspx I read that if you have a DC already then when you add a second you do not need to purchase additonal cals since they aren't necessary? Is this not the same thing with exchange or is it because it is additional software that users will be accessing? Out of interest since exchange can be web-based does this mean in theory that cals need to be purchased for all machines accessing the server externally or am i getting the wrong end of the stick now?
  5. Hello all, I got some software that wants some admin rights to run. I would prefer to run it from the server really but the software adds a .ini file to the windows folder and apparently needs to read/write to it before it starts the app. There are also a few dlls that get installed into the windows system folder as well. I have added the group to the power users group locally and it runs fine but when not in any of the groups it fails to run, stating that access to the .ini file is denied. What security risk would be apparent if the groups were part of the power users group, and how could i run the software without this need to run as local power users. I have looked at the package in orka and wise (evaluation) but the ini file is not listed. To be honest, i didn't really have a clue how it worked when it started up... :?
  6. ooo arrr matey. This is my first post as Manager as the last place Manager dealt with licensing. I looked into to it briefly but never in-depth, but wish i had. what about being illegal?? Its like buying a car then the engine and then having to pay for someone to put the bits together. Similar to the one i got really ;-) But there are these volume license agreements as well and the open agreement as well (for educational/government purposes, pah). Why so many? If they feel the price is too high and so need this many agreements, just bring them down !?!
  7. I have never had to deal with licensing issues until today. I purchased 2 server licenses and the woman on the end of the blower asked me about CALs? I assumed that we already had these as we have a server already in place. But curious i went and looked to find out if i was correct. This seems like such a rip off. If i got it right you pay for the Client OS license, then pay for the Server OS license, THEN pay to connect the two together???? Surely this is illegal!!! Please let me know if i got the wrong end of the stick. Also i think the whole licensing business could do with a simpler structure for when purchasing these things as there are just too many options. How do the rest of you get through this mess of licensing purchases?
  8. there is a setting in group policy where you can block installs from removable media.
  9. Would posters at the edugeek be willing to distribute course material or courses, therefore building a collective library of moodle courses for all to share. Would be an excellent place for no doubt top-notch content. I for one would like to see this sort of thing if it was possible and people were willing. I have just last week installed Moodle on my localhost to look at its potential and it does have some. The only problem is that it is for primary school and therefore finding (decent well-made) courses for this age range isn't easy. I will try and make some when my workload reduces and would also contribute if it is indeed feasible.
  10. Any chance ther could be some info added on the best knids of msi and mst creation software and tips on how to get the best out of them. I don't usually use software deployment to distribute software, one ris and out it goes locally, and what can be run across the network stays on the network, but i have just run into some problems with software where i don't have the CDs to hand and a bunch of pre-compiled MSI's that don't seem work. Any help on these matters would be excellent i.e. decompiling msi's if possible. I haven't looked into any of this as yet but will be doing so soon.
  11. Ok great thanks. I have backed up the dhcp db and will restore it onto the second server just before it goes down. This will be the first time i have moved a dhcp from one machine to the other. The DNS entries on the main server as far as i know are all dynamic. How can i tell if they are manually entered ones? The entries are also a bit messed up since there are entries on there from the previous domain structure (before i got here) which is one of the reasons why i am rebuilding it. Plus there are a lot of things that have been implemented and i'm not sure whether we need these. A fresh start is what i feel is needed.
  12. If i have installed an additional DC into a single forest and single domain environment when i dcpromo the main dc will this then transfer the fsmo's or would i need to sieze the roles first. I ask this as i need to do this soon, and i have no room for downtime. Will downing the first DC cause a problem of no one able to log in as i will need to re-install server 2003? Sorry for jumping on this post but it came up just at the time i started thinking about this.
  13. Have i got this right in my mind? The hdd is locked by a password which is resulting in it not being allowed to boot? If this is correct then "possibly" you may be able to use the trick that the xbox uses to unlock its hdd. There is a tool that is used to check the state of hdds which can be downloaded. The best place to look for this to find out if its possible is xbox-scene. You may need a firmware for the laptop as well. The tool is part of a bootable cd that is called hdutil. Maybe of some help, but it is somewhat of a long shot. I have never tried unlocking any other drive in this way.
  14. OK i entered this into the squid.conf file and clients able to access the internet by going direct to a site, but when clicking on any links the pages time out. Why does this happen? I have looked at the config files but cannot see what would be blocking these. any ideas?
  15. Thank you very much. I will check this out tomorrow.
  16. Hello all, Does anyone know if Squid can use a RM Proxy as a parent proxy. If so what would one put in the squid config file to get it to work, i.e. ours is adslcache.rmplc.co.uk on port 8080 so i have entered: cache_host above parent 8080 3130 no-query default but when i run a test on the squid it fails? thanks in advance for any help.
  17. HodgeHi

    Better MAC's

I use an Intel Mac mini and can say the best thing about it is its size when you couple this with say a 42" HDTV then thats where it gets good. Its all about size. And theres the power side of it which is well fast considering the size. Oh has anyone seen the iTV that is rumoured to be coming out? I do like to iMacs as well and if space is limited then you can also vesa mount the screen with the available adaptor leaving the desk even tidier.
  18. Hello all, Wasn't sure where to put this as i didn't want to stick it in the mac section as i thought more people would like to know, if they don't already. I have been trying to find a simple way to get a proxy service and content filter service up and running with minimum fuss. Since i know zero (or as close as) about Linux or programming side of UNIX, installing and securing a proxy server and content filtering would be a bit of a struggle. I found this site and installed on an intel laptop running latest version of tiger and it seemed fine. Edited some files to ban a few URLs and worked ok. Maybe some folks could look over it and see if there are any problems with it before i release it into a productive environment. Overall though i think it's pretty good in the fact that it was a straight forward installation. Thats the sort i like.
  19. Sorry i'm a bit confused by your answer. Did you mean system prefs when you pointed out control panel as i am using os x tiger. I forgot to mention this and it is in tiger where the problem is not parallels, but that does give me an idea of checking whether it works in Windows... thanks
  20. I hope someone can help. I have had this problem for a while now. When i need to either turn the sound down, up or mute, reduce or increase brightness or use the num lock i cannot as it does not respond. i have tried to turn on or off the option for using the fn key to provoke the os into making it work??? I have re-installed the base os after erasing hdd (with 0ne zero pass) before installing, but just the same. I upgraded to 10.4.6 to install the keyboard update but no difference. i have now run out of options. I have upgraded right up to date and still nothing. I hhave installed alll firmware and smc updates but still nada. I tried to reset the nvram but could not get it the beep twice instead it just restarted. anyone know how i can resolve this issue. Its been going on for about 4-5 months now. The machine? Macbook pro 2.ghz with 2GB ram.
  21. i used a belkin USB Dongle which seemed to be ok. I have to wait for server to load to use the util to connect so may not be good for configuring network services when booting. Its at PC world now for about £20. could be tested and returned if no good.
  22. You could just copy the apps straight out of the application folder if you are "entitled" to of course. Back up the application support folders in the library and then you should be ready to go once you put them back where they belong on the other machine. You will need a DVD-DL if you want to back them up though. I have tested this to see if it works and i never came across any problems. You may also want to copy the fonts folder as well since some fonts are used for the ilife suite. I had panther with my G5 and ilife is on the discs. So should be on the 1st install dvd? Any how if the discs cannot be found you may need a back up anyway.
  23. HodgeHi

    Riprep

Don't know if you sorted this this but i found somewhere on this forum (RIS Sticky maybe in the how to section) that you may need to disable the floppy controller in the bios, if copying over the image from the server to a machine. I also found that if the floppy drive is set to 1.44 and is not present it will stall the setup. You may need to set this to none as well.
  24. But how have they been welcomed? With a cold shoulder or open arms. Now you have been running them for a while. How many serious problems have you encountered? How has os tiger gone down (assuming the server has now arrived and it has been deployed).
  25. Also remember that the macbooks take some of the memory for graphics. Thats so not a good thing really. Don't know why they did that.
