If you have Apple remote desktop can you not just Copy the newer Office Folder from your computer and overwrite the copy on the remote machines?

Hello, VLEs. Everyone's on about them now and I'm no different at the moment. The boss has asked me to investigate a few of the commercial VLE's. The current list is looking like this: Fronter (fronter.co.uk) Netmedia Educations (netmedia-ed.co.uk) RM VLE (rm.com) Pearson Education (pearsonpheonix.com) Uniservity (uniservity.com) Viglen (viglen.co.uk) Basically what i am after is any comments from people whether the VLE in their experience was good/bad and what they thought was good/bad about them. We could perhaps build a small discussion regarding the VLEs out there and keep all the details together, like some sort of crib sheet? Anyway i digress. The sort of thing we are after is a VLE that can be tweaked to a style of our liking, whilst still maintaining a simplicity for a primary school to use. I had a look at Moodle but it seems very rigid in respect to it's theming abilities. We need the framework of the VLE to be flexible in the way that the younger (Reception) kids could have a more simplified layout than the Year 6 kids. I am in the process of looking into DrupalEd as it does seem a bit more flexible in its theming. Thanks in advance for any feedback

One of the key features that i wanted to use on OS X was to integrate all of the services that are separated into one application. Such as Calendaring, Emailing and Address/contacts. I have downloaded the Zimbra Desktop for this. It does what i want it to do but does seem a little sluggish at the moment. It is still in beta though so

I have just started to look at Zimbra for a real alternative to the built-in os x Mail service. The one thing i want to do is make the connection as seamless as possible. One way of doing this would be to use the connectors available for OS X and Outlook. But it seems to obtain these you need to buy the Professional edition. This is a bit too much for a Primary School which is why we opted for the Built-in OS X Mail service we currently use. So my question is does anyone know of a free open source connector option for both Outlook and OS X. I need one of each because the admin staff still use XP due to the requirements of SIMS.Net.

As i mentioned Office creates it's own folder 'Office 2004'. What about adding this to the allowed folders section? Are the Versions of OS the same for yours and Art (both leopard and not Tiger and leopard). The new application restrictions only work for leopard. You need to use legacy for Tiger.

I've Started to place my apps in certain folders so like DMcCoy i can allow and deny by folders. For example any games go into a 'games' folder and utilities are in the utilities folder. I can thus deny the access to utilities whilst still allowing access to Applications. Office should be the same, IIRC it adds it's own folder.

How much is the fine for driving whilst using a mobile phone? IMO it is far more dangerous. The amount of people who still do this irritates the hell out of me. I look at it this way. If someone ran over someone in your family you would be well furious as well as upset but if you found that they were texting a friend while doing it, then how would you feel? It's a little off-topic but it does come back round to bossman's comment on own actions and common sense. But also how yourself would act if it happened to you? Oh and why do some think that just because the phone isn't by their ears and on speakerphone it's OK??? /rant

Thanks for all the responses. It's interesting as a few posts have some conflicting info. A simple decision made awkward by the vendor's choice of making good or rubbish optical mice. We are a mac (ish) school and so would mostly be using Apple's mice which IMO are pretty good mice. Never had an issue with these mice on any surface before. Also the table in question has had various mice on it which all seem to result in the same fatality on this surface. They don't work.

I have one of the HP mini-note 2133 with XP pro installed and 2GB ram inside. Works reasonably well enough. Every thing works as it should. Open Office 3.0 installed etc.

I did. I got a piece of card with some pictures on I have decided on a speckled white (with black speckles) work surface as it resembles what we have at the moment, which works with the mice. Seems to safest solution to me.

I looked at the slingboxes and it would have been a good solution except that you can only watch from one client at a time. As we would have around 15-20 clients connecting then it wouldn't be usable. I have also been considering the Eye TV option. There is a small app called CyTV that allows a VLC player to stream from the client machine. But can only have access to one channel at a time IIRC.

Just looked at the TVCatchup thing. It seems that it can only be used in a domestic surrounding and also violates TOC's if publicly broadcasting.

Well i do have the option for a black finish (i already have leviathan carpet ) although i am not sure if it is a matte finish. Does the Matte finish make a difference? Does the reflection value of the surface have a dramatic affect. I thought that the better the reflection value the better the surface since optical work by reflection which is why glass fails as it refracts rather than reflects and so the laser doesn't get back to the mouse? Am i over-complicating this simple choice. I just don't want to end up with a whole bench of surface and it not working with optical mice. I don't want to resort back to mouse mats as it gives the pupils (primary kids) more freedom on the surface.

This is what i thought. The table in question is smooth. It is also yellow. I have uploaded some images of the table. Does pattern also play an important role. I read somewhere that patterns can cause an optical mouse pointer to jump around as the colour values change.

Hello, How would one stream TV across the network and give the end users the ability to choose which channel they watch? I have been asked this question by the head and it has got me scratching my head. Surely to do such a thing would require the use of more than one tuner? If anyone has managed to do this or knows what gear is needed to do this then any advice would be great. I have looked at the slingbox but it only allows playback on one device at any one time. Any others that would do the trick?

Good Morning, I have now got to choose a work surface for the ICT Suite in our new school. 2 years ago this would have been a simple decision but now i am not so sure. Basically at my current location we have a single table on which an optical mice simply doesn't work. The pointer shakes on the screen but no control can be had. There doesn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary about the table. Anyone know what i should be looking out for with regards to optimal surfaces for optical mice? Thanks for any hints

Hello all, I was wondering how flexible Moodle is for creating themes. For example can i create a theme and move some of the content into different locations? I have just started to look at Moodle and i think that it just doesn't look as good as Joomla. This is in no way dissing the excellent work of DanIt. We are a primary school and i have gone through all of the themes that are on the Moodle site. I have looked at quite a few of the sites that say they create moodle themes. Most look similar to all the others. I am after something that is a bit easier to work and navigate through from a Primary School usage side of things. I have been seriously considering creating my own theme for primary Schools, but if the framework is 'quite stiff' then i don't see the point. I have looked into drupal and am running Joomla for my school site. I would just like something that looks good and also has the simplicity for Primary School pupils (and Staff) to use. I hope this makes sense.

You may find that there is a problem with the URL of the site. I had this problem with my moodle install a couple of weeks ago. I had changed my URL on the site but not the config file and so the CSS files weren't loading. Upon changing the site URL in the config.php every thing worked fine again

Could be a permissions issue on those folders.

If you have it installed in parallels on a mac then you should be able to install the parallel tools. Now i can't remember if it allows for shared folders between the two machines. Probably not the way you wanted to do it though. Now i have no experience of Linux but i would assume to you create a shared folder somewhere on your Linux machine using SAMBA or FTP and access the share through Finder's connect to server option. That's as much help as i can be

I like Dhicks suggestions with regards to selling dedicated boards to vendors. This would help all of us. We could mention a product is rubbish and a post could direct us to the vendors section where they discuss how we got to that opinion and possibly resolve the issues with the product. Issue could possibly be a misconfiguration? Also a few more ideas. You could possibly expand on the Eduprojects a little more. Say sell some video tutorials on how to do things and customise your Edu Joomla installs. You could possibly create some podcasts and sell them in iTunes. You could also possibly create some small iPhone apps. The guy who made the iFart made a bomb over the Christmas period, selling his at just the 59 cents mark. I think he cleared just over $3,000 after Apple's cut as well. The Anti-Apple guys are gonna beat me senseless now

Sorry i didn't manage to get back to you. I will have a look at my server config for you when i get back to work although i am unsure as to when that is going to be since i may be working from home for most of the week off. What happens if you use "afp://AD_username:password@FQDN_of_OSXserver/sharename" You know to replace the details above with your own. Also i found that the share names are also case sensitive. You could also log on as an AD user, get a kerberos ticket from the authentication server and try "afp://;AUTH=Client%20Krb%20v2@myserver/myVolume" Again replace myserver/myvolume with your own. The above should try kerberos auth for mounting the AFP share. Not sure if this works in the Finder though. You could also try the IP address of the server instead of the FQDN. This may help to remove any doubt over DNS.

Hello everyone, hope you have had an enjoyable term I have just started to get into my Joomla site and have set up a restricted area for Staff to access. Now what i would like to do is to create a staff news feed similar to the one at the top left location on the front page. The question is how does one go about first creating the feed for staff announcements and then adding the option to create an entry using the usermenu? I have looked at the RD RSS and the news feed manager. i have created a category and also a news feed but i can't seem to find out where you add it to the staff area pages and i also can't add the feed to the usermenu since it isn't listed. It is probably very easy (like adding menus) it's just that i can't see how to do it. I may start creating some video tutorials on how to do these things (in my own little way ) but first i need to work out how to do them myself. Thanks for any help. Enjoy your half-term break.
