WIth more and more using MDT 2010 on here I wonder if it's worth starting a sticky at the top of this forum with MDT Tips and Tricks? If I get time I might start going through the posts collecting things from the forum. Just ordered the second one now from Computer Manuals. Great success with Windows 7 and MDT2010 today. Very happy with it - the basics all done. Now for research into extending it. KMS and MAK keys next for us. Gareth

All sorted. It seems I have to run the Management Tool as an Administrator. Weird thing is, the logon I am using is part of the Administrator group - so I assumed it would work. Gareth

Hi Guys, I'm currently configuring an SQLExpress database for MDT2010 using SQL Server Management Studio (SP2) and am having a permission issue. I don't know much about SQL but am following the instructions in this deployment book. I've followed it all the way through. Can anyone advise on what I need to do to get past the following error? I'm trying to get my BuildAccount to have permissions to use the 'db_datareader' option. This is the error I get. Cheers Gareth

Is there anyone out there who has integrated a Wordpress site into their Joomla installation? We are doing this with the module from corePHP (which the school paid for). I'm having trouble with some of the .css stuff. Gareth

Evening guys, We've just received our 4 free GBIC modules from Netgear - part of a promotion that was running the other month. So we plugged one into our new Netgear switch - a GS724TS and connected it to the network - it didn't work. So we plugged it into our new 48 port switch - GS748TS - and it didn't work. So we tried the three others and not one of them worked. So we moved a DLink GBIC module from a DLink switch and plugged it in - ahh it worked. Has anyone got any idea what we need to do for the Netgear ones to work? At the moment they are just dead. Do the switches need to be turned off and then on with the gbic modules installed? I assumed they were hot pluggable like the DLink ones are. Any help appreciated, Gareth

Well I'm at the point now that I have to do something. I've just reached 15 stone. I'm 5'9 but am getting a belly and moobs (I love that term). I want to start running so am after advice. I bought some 'proper' running shoes last year in a fit of energy and enthusiasm but messed up my back. I used to play hockey so am used to exercise. Any advice on what to do to start running? So this tale is getting better. The LEA have been looking at some stuff and so far we have managed to get the logon time down for a cached profile to around 35-40 seconds depending on the machine. At the LEA centre the logon is around 15 seconds which they say is right as they map drives across domains. Now this is our issue - the LEA have discovered an issue with mapping drives across domains. The LEA SIMS server is on a different network to the LEA Curriculum Domain. For some reason the drive mapping they have in place with a script is taking 15 seconds to connect. Thus adding this time to the logon - increasing it to the 30 or so seconds. This weekend the LEA restarted their domain servers in the early hours of the morning as they had identified a couple of authentication issues during Friday. So hopefully this may solve something or other. SO it's getting better. Myself and Richard (techie) are working on consolidating GPOs and cutting down the amount of individual/little GPOs we have on the network. Gareth

In that case where do I setup a mandatory profile that I want each user to use? The LEA always had us use the AD setting but changing the permissions on the server so nothing writes back and also change the ntuser to .man instead of .dat Hmmm - it seems we may have a roaming mandatory profile. So where are we going wrong? Gareth

This is an old one I guess, but how should mandatory profiles really work? Our situation is this.... In AD each user points to a profile. At the moment this is set to: \\\ygg-userprofiles\staffv5 (It is the 5th generation of staff profile). It is a mandatory profile and the required .man file is in place. The profile is 2.98Mb.We assume it works. When a user logs on, I assume they get given this profile and that it downloads to their machine. However how should this happen? WHen the profile downloads should it keep it's name - staffv5 when stored on the machine or will it rename itself to whatever user is logged in - thus creating several profiles if several users log in? At the moment when we check the machine there are a few profiles on there - all of various sizes - they seem to grow. I assumed that when they logged on the staffv5 profile would download to the local machine (2.98Mb of it) and sit there. Anyone else who logs in would then reference that profile (as it is the same). What I didn't expect is several profiles there each with different user names. IN addition if they do change usernames then I didn't expect them to grow. One staff member's profile is now at 8Gb - even though it is meant to be mandatory - which I assumed would keep it at 2.98Mbyte. Is there a setting somewhere I have missed? Any help appreciated, Gareth

Today we started tidying up our GPOs and managed to consolidate a couple into one larger one. We knew the settings worked so slapped them all together. Also created a GPO to install Base software for when a machine is built. When looking at the logs from Policy Reporter we can see each policy being loaded and read - now this must take a little bit of time (even if it is milliseconds) - so are working on the assumption that less policies is better than more policies. This was one of the benefits of our old RM Network - somehow the start menu knew what was installed and only built itself using those icons - no white boxes (which indeed ar a pain). Cannot remember how the RM network did it though. Gareth

Evening All, I'm just wondering what people use to keep their technical documentation. I've been looking at DocuWiki but it seems a lot of hassle for what it is. I just want something that will store pages of information and possibly keep track/diary of changes that are made to the network by myself or the techie. In addition it would be handy to have sections for each department so we can refer to changes that have been made in that department. A lot to ask? Maybe someone out there already uses something, Gareth
