I think I've abandoned that idea now. I'm just going to be adding more untrusted components into the mix; whose to say the LSI card isn't fault or I do something wrong with flashing it. I'm using R-Studio demo now, to capture an image over to our file store at work, from which I'll run data recovery on so I'm not bashing the disks constantly. If this doesn't work, it's just going to have to be one of the annoying, "could have easily been avoided, but I'm stupid...", gutting life lessons.

They were unused and spare at work, so the boss said I could have them. Saved me spending a few hundred quid on SATA drives. Would this LSI card do the trick? Once I get the data back, I don't really care about using the server again if I'm honest, or I'll at least get some SATA disks and set up RAID6 or 10 with an online backup...

It's a P410. I'm at the point of just giving up to be honest. I'm still gutted that the data is gone, but I don't know if I can be bothered with the hassle/stress of going through all the steps to find that the data is still unrecoverable. Tempted to just ditch the server entirely and go to a 2TB SSD and rely on cloud backups. I've just booted it up again and it's saying the array needs to recover; this is probably because I booted up to the 410's config with just one of the three drives plugged in. I wonder if it's worth just putting back the original, failed disk in, and letting it do a recovery. I fear that all the writes will just make it properly dead though. Another lesson learned; don't bother using enterprise grade stuff at home, especially if I can't afford to repair/maintain it...

Hi, I cannot see any obvious way of doing this on the P410 RAID controller. There is an option to create indivudial RAID 0 arrays for each physical disk, however I'm concerned that that will wipe the disks. Any ideas?

I had to go HW RAID due to the server mobo only supporting SATA. I would have gone SATA but I was given three brand new 4TB SAS drives...

Just thinking; would a cheap ish DELL/HP PCI-E RAID controller work to just have all the separate disks show up on my desktop PC? Get them showing up as separate drives, back them up, then attempt to use software to recover a RAID config and pull out any files I can?

Ah got you. There's nothing to recover, sadly. Many folders appear, but most of them are corrupt/unreadable when you try to access them. I might bring the drive in to work and take an image of the whole 8TB drive at Windows level. After that, how you recommend I go about getting the disks to show up as separate disks? Take them out and connect them elsewhere?

Does that mean I'll need to clear the config on the controller to allow the 3 drives to appear separately in Windows/other bootable OS to take a backup?

Any tips on getting SAS drives hooked up to anything other than a live business server? Are there any reliable USB3 adaptors etc?

No luck. Initialisation hit 100% and failed. Data is still showing folders but all are corrupt and unreadable. I'm determined not to loose this array, but not sure what do next as they're SAS drives. Are there any affordable adapters, even if it's SAS to USB3 etc? I don't want to remove the config of the RAID controller on the server itself and risk exacerbating the issue. I fear it's too far gone now anyway; it's more the old data I've forgotten about that I'm upset about the most. Years and years of stuff

Yup, if I could afford £800 for a new bank of 4TB SAS DISKs I'd get rid of RAID5 entirely. One of the sites we look after is RAID 5 still, and they've had a recent failure. Thankfully no loss yet. I'll be begging them to cough up for new disks and downtime soon.

I wonder if the P410 is just a very basic controller then. I still don't know why my little HP microserver with the HW RAID controller took the whole array down after a single disk failure...

yeah I have 200GB on Google Drive, so my phone photos and the saved holiday albums are online. It's more the raw files from the camera that I'd meant to go back to edit etc that I'm going to miss.

Yeah that's what I thought, which is why I was so confused when the whole thing went down from a single failed disk. It's not life or death that I get the data back, but I'll be pretty gutted if it goes. All my holiday raw photos, GoPro footage of holidays and flying lessons, various documents, old photos/installers, WIP videos. I know I should have backed up, but I'm not sure where I would back up ~3TB of data without costing the earth.

Thankfully, this is my personal file store at home so data loss won't get me sacked I have a 3 x 4TB RAID 5 Array at home, using some old SAS drives. One of them just failed, which normally would be 'OK' - OK in the sense that it shouldn't fail the array... but it did. . Took it offline, went into the P410 RAID controller and yup, drive 5, the middle one, was 'MISSING'. Ordered a refurb from ebay, fitted it last night. Loads of warnings about the array still being failed and the data lost. Ok, lets not panic, the data is still on the disks, I'll be able to sort it... Put the array back online, boot the server up real quick (OS is on an SSD on a separate controller) and see if D drive has reappeared. It has! Performance is horrendous though, as the RAID controller is churning away, presumably rebuilding the data on the new disk. Once the noise stops, I try to open a folder - great, I see folders! Subfolders now, this is looking good! File, crap - corrupt or missing. I try a single tiny 20KB jpg and that opens. Mind starts racing about stripe size - I'm a RAID rookie, but my understanding is that if a file is smaller than the stripe size, it won't be split across the disks? Please tell me if this is correct or not. I shut it down again, go back to the controller and see a status about a parity initialising in progress. I've left this over night and it's currently on 19%. Please tell me I've done the right thing? First of all, I've not done the good thing (ever) of taking a back up of the array. If this data goes, it's gone forever. All my GoPro footage, WIP premiere videos, my Plex movie library, documents etc. All gone and it's my own fault. What are my chances of this parity thing actually getting my data back together and usable? Or is it more likely that all these writes have scuppered any chance I may have had?

How do you find Oktopus in comparison? We have had in on a couple of devices with CTOUCHs and I haven't like it much. It doesn't seem to play well with Windows 10 multi screen, but it may be that our GPOs need tweaking as we have customisation and display settings locked down. We have a pretty much 50/50 split between people preferring extended/duplicate mode in their rooms, and we tell them to use Windows + P to select their mode, but it breaks the tablet/touch settings if they change from the mode that we set it up for. For example, if we set the room up in extended, and tell Windows which is the touchscreen and save it using our admin accounts, when a user returns and switches to duplicate, the all the Windows Ink tools in PowerPoint 2016 cease to work until they Windows + P back to extended. Oktopus adds more frustration; a quick F12 switches screens, but it won't default to the touchscreen. On a related note, does anyone know of a display/power setting I can configure that will stop Windows from loosing connection to the interactive HDMI monitor (CTOUCH, BenQ etc.) if the monitors source is switched from HDMI to android for example? This seems to break things too, but, again, I suspect it's a display/power setting I need to tweak. Thanks!

Yeah it's not cheap, and frankly we're of the opinion we'd just want to go to an alternative and use their built in features or M$ Ink tools. It's just trying to convince staff to drop SMART and offer them a transition solution.

Thanks for this. I'm waiting on a call from a UK SMART rep, so I'll ask the same questions. That certainly matches our experience with SMART, however this is version 11 and prior to their current subscription model. Perhaps our shared experiences was valid then, but has changed since going subscription based? I suspect that once the year's subscription has expired, it drops to a restricted mode (unlike with older versions). I'll report back with SMART's answer to this Going with SMART stuff would be win win, but I won't do it just to keep notebook files working.

Hi all, Fast forward almost 6 months, and just wondering what people are going for these days? We're even more behind the times than the OP; we're running 11.0, also on a perpetual license. We're running 1609 LTSB W10, but we will be looking to catch up to the latest LTSC in the near future. From testing, Smartboard 11 will likely cease to work entirely, and given that it's already sketchy (we have to use M$ ink in powerpoint, as the SMARTInk plugin doesn't work with Office 2016), we seriously need to find an alternative sharpish. Our smartboards/projectors are 8 years old at the youngest, with the average age being older than the Yr7s... We're about to go out for tender for new interactive displays, and have sampled solutions from Hitachi, Sharp, Promethean, and BenQ thus far. The problem that we've got is that teaching staff are hanging on to Smart Notebook like a vice; they REALLY do not want to let it go, and I can understand it given their last decade of lesson planning has been done using this resource. But, it will not work forever, and one day it will simply be taken out of our hands and it WILL cease to work entirely. The simple solution is to buy back into SMART, but it is a subscription and I don't need to explain to fellow education based IT people why this won't happen... So, we have two (and a half) options: 1) Buy SMART hardware products, get the year's free subscription, then fall back to free restricted mode. Has anyone any experience with the current SMART range (MX, 6000, 7000)? Specs they seem about on par with alternatives, but with the benefit of having the physical pens etc. for use with SMART software. 1a) Don't buy SMART hardware and go for the likes an alternative such as BenQ etc., but install the free restricted version of SMART Notebook. This would entail having to put up with the "Restricted Mode" watermark in every SMART document/application. Assuming it's backwards compatible, the watermark won't show up in the rooms that are staying with projectors/smartboards (we're not replacing all 100+ classrooms). 2) Find a SMART alternative that, ideally, will open up Notebook files. If it can't open them, then we'll need to find a way to convert existing files due to the sheer amount of them in use. We've tried Oktopus which seems to be a direct competitor but so far we're not too impressed, and the teaching staff weren't either. Particularly regarding 1a) and 2), long term, we could look at exporting all SMART resources as powerpoints or PPTs to slowly get staff to move away from SMART. I think education has fallen into SMART being the de facto choice so many staff are set the SMART way. Thoughts from you fine people?

Me again. Anyone tips on setting/variables to use to get X6 to deploy with PDQ silently? I've used netcopy to create the MSI but upon runnning it on a PC, it is still asking for the old next, next, install etc. Seemingly got it working by locally running msiexec /i /quiet "serif_MSI.msi" but it's still a one by one basis...
