1. I have been thinking about this for a long time and we decided to go ahead with the following: Schools can create a tutor group based templates with aspects for appointment times in SIMS Assessment Manager for each tutor/teacher. Therefore each tutor/teacher makes individual appoinments with each student and they are centrally avaliable to both teaching staff [as each member of staff has access to AM/SIMS through their own laptop as we use Lesson Register for eReg; Profiles for Reports and AM for termly tracking]. Changes by parents to appointments would be made by ringing the Admin Asst directly who has access to all templates on Assessment Manager. Appointment postcards/letters can easily be created using AM's individual report functionaility and in SIMS.net Reporting. All info can be exported/imported!!. If you have SIMS webparts for the Learning Gateways or Eportal then you can publish them there quite easily.! [although i haven't got it]
2. I would have it as: FirstName.LastName = for ALL Staff Joe.Bloggs FirstName.LastName.YearOfEntry = for all students Joe.Bloggs.07
3. To be honest I'm not a great fan of Linux generally as a OS - I have been forced to use it a Uni but sometimes it can be used well. [i just find it difficult to do what I want to do but maybe thats down to a general lack of knowledge and software] As for servers, I agree that we could have some for webbased apps, however I would need to start learning how to do it. Sometimes its a sense of familiarity with windows which just does it. However I do agree with OpenSource Projects, ie. Joomla etc. I think I've just got mixed bag of opinions which are all confused and too difficult to write here!
4. What is this magazine...? 8O
5. Sims.net Lesson Monitor 7 sometime in Oct IRCC will incorporate offline working... [OR in the mean time use Lesson Monitor 6] The tablet idea is a very a good one!!! Surely you can wait till them and use a tablet or devise a solution without going offline... can you not put wireless in the PE foyer?
6. Thanks guys... you've been really helpful as always!! @thom: This is the bit I don't understand... why would you use the Moodle web parts if Sharepoint has its own learning kit? Am I missing something?
7. Its been decided that we are using the Learning Gateway solution. Are any of you using the Microsoft Solution to VLEs ... I'm wondering whether to: 1. Get an external company such as Ramesys or Texsys to do it OR 2. Do it myself. How hard is it too create yourself? If you have any screenshots of the Learning Gateway in action I would really appreciate it!! Thanks
8. I think your on the right lines but is not just Link...
9. Tahoma for me!! It's just nice cool looking font. I also like the new Office 07 fonts, but I'm more keen on Tahoma. But the one thing I hate is seeing Times New Roman
10. Lesson Monitor is being outphased by Lesson Register in SIMS.net which will hopefully provide all the functionality of LM including offline working.
11. Could you not just use SIMS Assessment Manager 7 and Profiles 7 for your Recoridng, Assessment and Reporting Needs?
12. SIMS.net Lesson Monitor 7 using teachers laptops through wired and Wireless connections. 1. We don't have morning Reg - all students go to their 1st lesson. In your case you could create a Assessmbly slot before P1 but P1 would still be the earliest marks. 2. Teachers take electronic registers by laptop in the changing rooms - its wireless! 3. We get the office to print registration classes every morning after the AM statutory registration. 4. We went with the Big bang theory [but were prepared and had paper registers just incase] as we moved from Bromcom to SIMS.net. However before we introduced Bromcom, we phased in by Year Group, 1 Year group at a time, solving problems if they arised. Staff seem fine with it. Slight glitches as always with any system but nothing more. Teachers actually find it helpful to see the data SIMS hold as they never had access to it before! There is an online solution ....SIMS Learning Gateway but it looks to be in its infancy just yet... so were getting our MS Learning Gateway sorted first and then we might consider it.
13. Hi Sorry to bring the topic up again, but if anybody has got any working examples that they would like to share of their Powerpoints or screenshots, it would be nice to see them .... Thanks
14. Would you soley teach... would you still do a bit of network managing thus keeping your foot in two doors...?
15. The Dell Ultra SFF sits quite neatly behind their monitor which is always good however the normal Dell Small Form Factor is quite good too!!!
16. As to legality, I know a few Universities too, who have changed the file itself - so it is a patchy ground - unsure though
17. I'd be really interested in the images that you create for the logon screen customisations... if you could post them here it would greatly appreciated
18. Again, Dell here too!
19. Hi I was wondering what Exchange spam software people use... Thanks
20. We use Lesson Register - a fantastic product with the ability to add comments to each student. A very quick and easy system - since we moved from Bromcom folders!!
21. What Health & Saftey act is it? our librarian supervises kids all day - during lunch; before schools; after school; with no teaching staff. I know this happens in many schools. Are you sure?
22. Sorry to bring the post off-topic again, but how did you get a liecense - did you get a free educators one; if so who was the reseller? Cheers Images were made using Google SketchUp and only took an evening. I've also got one of the new ICT office and server room, makes things so much easier when explaining the plan to the builders ^^
23. We brought some material from the funds of Specialist School. The stuff is very good to start off with and then staff can go ahead and edit how they want it!! In some areas such as maths they quite interesting!
24. No problems here either!!
25. Ok, I'm just wondering whether if you have XP running Server 03 SBS do you have to leave the VPC running all day; logged in or what? Unsure :?: I think I might just go for actually putting Server 03 straight on to the machine ... Although I have put VPC on my laptop which has Vista with XP running as VPC.... looks good!
