I remember now as it has happened again. I pulled the win 7 pro x64 boot wim from the dvd and added it to WDS as a boot image. Renamed it deploy 7 x64 and when i fire up my laptop and select f12 i can only see the old x86 boot images and not this new x64 bit one. I restarted WDS and no change. I double checked the boot tab in WDS server properties which has the boot\x64\pxeboot.com for x64 architecture and boot\x86\pxeboot.com for x86 architecture. The laptop definitely can handle x64 and has had it installed in the past, if this was not the case i would have assumed it was because it was not a x64 capable machine. Any advice?

Thanks for the replies, I swear i have tried this and it kept booting to the x86 anyway but I am willing to give it another go..... ..... will post back with results.

I have been messing with WDS on my 2003 server as i was used to using RIS in the past. I have got XP working well with WDS but have a strange issue with Windows 7 at the minute. I have boot images for deploying and capturing 7. I have install images (base images from DVDs) for Windows 7 both x86 and x64 in WDS. When i hit f12 on a core2 duo laptop (which is definitely able to run x64 as it has in the past) and network boot, i choose to "deploy Vista/7" and after putting in my password and username to connect to the server, my images are shown. The problem is the images are all the x86 ones. The x64 are there in WDS next to the x86 but are not shown after i get to this stage. I have tried to disable the x86 ones in WDS to see if the others then show but no joy. I thought it was because my boot image was loading a x86 boot image and that was why it was showing only the x86 install images but i don't think that is right either because... I can capture a x64 Windows 7 image using the x86 capture boot image and also deploy the x64 captured image as a x64 OS using the x86 boot deploy. Why would the x86 capture and deploy boot images work great to capture and deploy x64 machines and not show the base wims taken from the DVD? Am i right to even say you do not need to use a x64 boot image at all? Or am i horribly wrong and i need a x86 boot image to capture and another x64 boot image alongside it. Then 2 again of each architecture for deploying? It annoys me that i have to create and image of a x64 machine before i can deploy it yet i can deploy the x86 ones straight off. Tell me i am doing something really stupid. I have checked up on the net about this and there were various problems similar to mine but nothing seemed to work or match the problem i was having. So to recap, my x86 capture boot image can capture x64 fine. It can also deploy the x64 captured image. It will not show the x64 base images i took from the 7 dvd the same way i did with the x86 ones. It only shows the x86. Any one with some ray of light? Cheers

In a few years there will be fewer network managers or non corporate techies when BSF really starts to bite in all areas. Perhaps many tuped workers will be unable to use sites like this that are so useful at the moment and be forced to use the systems and support facilities provided by their company. I hope Edugeek and those employed by it are planning for the future. What use is sponsoring sites when the userbase decreases and the purchasing power of the users dissapears when they all have their budgets handed to the managed service providers? I hope though that things don't ever get that bad.

Good news for everyone. Bad news is they are appealing and will continue to abuse our rights in the meantime.

Also make sure from a policy point of view that you are informing your superiors when 3rd parties access your system remotely. Even if it is simply just a form the head signs once a year to allow a selection of support companies to access parts of their software or service when needed. You know that when they blow your server up the head will crucify you otherwise for letting them do it.

I woke at 5.30 thinking it was past my alarm time at 6.20am. Quick panicked and woke myself up checked the my emails only to realise my mistake. Couldn't get back to sleep so waited 30 mins for the email saying it was closed as expected. Study day for me.

The jobs section seems to be a nit picking paradise. Spelling, websites the lot. Give everyone some slack guys. If you are resentful about your own wages you won't get a better deal slating pay or picking up errors on others websites etc.. Not saying anyone in particular but just what i have seen a few times or more now on these job boards. We are on the same team as said above. Nobody is perfect. My network is far from it. Agreed with some of the above. If someone said they wanted to pray to darth vader for your child because they were a follower of Jedi i think some would not be happy either. After all, to me as someone who believes all faiths are misguided and dangerous, it would be something i would definitely object to regardless of the fact that it would actually do nothing in reality. Let the people of faiths pray to their gods. They do need to keep that mystic stuff to themselves though when asked in these circumstances. Who is to say the teacher did not push it on the parent? There is always more to a story than the papers or news websites report.

Just a suggestion and maybe not exactly what is discussed here and maybe not even feasable but.. Edugeek puts some money aside for some project with special needs schools for example. At the same time arranges via the forums for anyone who is interested to volunteer to come and help install configure any kit and at the same time improve their CV and contribute. They get paid some travel fee or something. Might be too much hassle but might work for specific projects that require some manpower and a bit of planning. Just trying to think of ways that the guys on these forums between work or hoping to get into IT might be able to benefit from and help at the same time. I would also say standard contributions to IT related charities could happen alongside such things.

I remember Robert Moir. Wasn't he based in Luton somewhere? Always a highly knowledgeable guy. I remember he used to update Microsoft patches on his servers without concern despite using RM and the potential problems it may have caused. Brave guy . All those names mentioned above ring a bell. It used to make me chuckle when people argued against a forum because the list was easy for them, mainly because had a specific monitor set up on their desk just for the mailing list. Not so good for me on some 15 inch CRT though fighting through nonsense mails to get to the useful info Friday Funnies!! now i remember!

I remember the old list server and the rows when it was suggested that we go to a forum instead . The weblinks with treasure chest type packages on school websites that were shared to others. Always used to be some password of net/connect on many of them although i do not know why. Some really good community spirit back then too as well as squabbles every now and then. The good old days. I think The RM communities have lost a fair few members to this forum in fact.

On the whole i feel the mods do a pretty good job. I think Edugeek should hire Grumbledook back as a mod as he is one of the most sensible guys i have read posts from in many years. Personally, as much as i try to remain calm when people are throwing around rude remarks or being particularly holier than thou, sometimes i bite back and would expect such a reaction to result in a word from a mod when necessary. I think everyone needs to count to ten when someone has a dig at them which they feel is unjustified (definitely myself included) and have a word via pm before posting back to the main thread with a biting reply. Perhaps less moderator action would be required if this was the case. I think that Dos_Box has the right balanced approach to the forums. I personally have an issue with a particular mod but that is not for me to worry about too much as i do not pay the bills for this site or do the "real" work that goes on behind the scenes to warrant much of a say in how it is run. I have faith that behind the scenes the team who run the site are doing things the right way for the benefit of the whole community even if sometimes i do not like some of the decisions myself. @Bossman, i may not agree with everything you post but you are so damned nice about it all!! How do you stay so happy?? Tell me as i need to release the grump inside.

With regards to the Fedex thread. I posted something that was pulled up by particular (same ones each time) members over the words "little hitler" which were referring to nobody in particular but rather an over officious type of person or character. I was then subjected to lots of nazi comments and negative remarks and such which were absolutely nothing to do with what i had said or in the spirit of the words used or indeed anything to do with the conversation that was going on. I got quite offended at this and made my feelings known. I guess this is why the thread was pulled. A shame that certain people constantly try to goad others on these forums and ruin threads. I have asked the mods to look into my posts on the Fedex thread to see where i warranted the negative attacks because it is quite clear to me certain people have a chip on their shoulder and are making that clear whenever i post. I do feel though that a certain moderator has absolutely no impartiality and will take sides when members have a disagreement. In this particular instance i did in fact use inappropriate language so i can appreciate that my comment needed to be edited, although the sarcastic remark on the public edit by the particular mod was not appreciated and only annoyed me more. I have mentioned this behaviour in a message to the moderators as i feel it only encourages others when they see a moderator being rude and picking sides. I apologise for your thread being removed Gareth, it was a good conversation and was pleasant until towards the end. Hopefully it can be put back without the unhelpful comments about nazis that sprung up for no valid reason. If you do not like something that someone has said and feel it is not suitable or is offensive, i would suggest you either pm that person or perhaps as a last resort, report the post and leave it to the mods. Flaming does not help the situation.
