  1. Cheers Ric Yeah, anything must be better than the version I'm trying (and failing) to keep running I think it's about time the Library bit the bullet and upgraded. It'll also mean goodbye to my trusty NT4 TS box!!
  2. We have an old install of Accelerated Reader v5.1. To try and fix a particular problem with the app Renaissance Learning's KB recommends upgrading to 5.14. I contacted Renaissance Learning to request the upgrade but was told that 5.1 / 5.14 is no longer supported and they couldn't supply the upgrade (hardly surprising as it runs on NT4!) Does anyone have the 5.14 upgrade? If so I could I have a copy of it? Only other option is to buy the latest version - something the Librarian doesn't want, and probably can't afford, to do Thanks!
  3. Dell Mini 12? Linky
  4. I do private work for staff here and get 'paid' with Guinness Most of the work I get given is spyware / malware / virus type stuff. Win win situtaion really - staff get a fully working PC again and it reduces the risk of the them bringing nasties into school
  5. thanks.. I'll give it a go tomorrow
  6. thanks guys... I had tried admin as part of the guessing the password process, but that didnt work looks like its been changed from the default but no one has documented it looks like a reinstall.... I may be some time
  7. Recently had a yr11 lad show us how he could get to a command prompt while running as a pupil user and I'm a bit stumped how to block it... he's creating a new shortcut on the desktop pointing to command.com. If he runs that from the desktop he gets blocked through a SR policy. If he drags the shortcut into IE the shortcut runs OK and he gets a dos window. I could block command.com but I'd like to know how to stop shortcuts running this way. I initially thought it was somehow running from his temp internet files, so I ran filemon to see what was running and from where but couldn't see anything out of the ordinary. TIA
  8. we're using an old version of Accelerated Reader installed on an even older NT4 server... I need to run the db repair tool but it's asking for an admin password. From what we can make out the admin password for the db repair tool was left to the factory default but as the software is about 5 million years old no one knows where the original packaging is our documentation can anyone DM me the default admin password? I've dropped Renaissance Learning an email but heard nowt back yet Any help would be great!
  9. OT post alert: anyone got an example / experience / case study of a mixed Linux / XP network implementation? PM me with any details / experiences etc
  10. wow, if you're serious you've got a fair bit of development to do - and I'm not being sarcastic or having a dig. I still think the best way would be to use moodle as the platform and continue to develop that, or if you wanted to go down the commercial route offer bespoke development / consultancy. Good luck with it!
  11. excuse me for asking, but do you represent a company / group of developers or are you solely undertaking this project ?
  12. my first thought too, but I was trying to be polite
  13. seamless integration with the schools MIS other than that I'd say don't try and reinvent the wheel and start with moodle and edit / customise / improve that
  14. really chuffed for you mate!
  15. does anyone know specifically which schools the clowns / muppets / stooges that participated in the making of this video are from? apart from a having a deep desire to take them personally to task regarding their comments I would also cordially invite them to my school and show them what can be achieved by a very small (2 man) in house set-up I would also like to punch the bald guy, who looked a bit like Davros, until my fist went numb.
  16. Some of you may be aware that Bolton LA is currently going through the initial stages of BSF. As part of this initial phase one of the LA's consultants is arranging a meeting with IT Techs and the BSF project lead. So I'm just sounding out what questions need to be / should be asked, what areas need to be covered etc Any thoughts / suggestions / opinions etc would be appreciated
  17. I don't tend to get involved with posts concerning BSF but I do have to say that video was a pile of bollocks
  18. that's a bit of a shame. I woudn't have minded meeting up with you to have a talk about the mag project
  19. fantastic piece of kit... no pissin' clue of how to use it as tech resource with the kids in school, but cool none the less
  20. it can also be used to generate interest prior to the conference and get a meme going throughout the edublogsphere (god i f*ckin cringe even typing that...) upto and including the conference itself
  21. any chance i could crib a lift off you?
  22. yep .lnk's are probably the issue. I know we've had issues with pupils opening docs from the documents menu... when opened that way the get a software restriction error. when opened from within the app; File > Open they work fine
  23. nope, having used it for years I have to say its cack for the reasons mentioned above.... we can pause, review a 'blemish', scratch our heads, consult the sophos KB only to be prompted with 'error code not found', or some bollocks about a deployment timing out because of a slow network connection even though its being piped over a gig switch. perhaps sophos is optimised for deployment on a large hadron collider how can any software vendor code into their software error codes and then can't be arsed to have any reference to them on their KB? I have to say sophos KB is as about as useful as capita supportnet ... other than that sophos is wonderful
  24. another sophos user here.. mixed feelings at the moment. yep it's easy to setup Enterprise Manager and deploy sophos out to clients (syncs with AD so it basically does it itself) Never had any probs with it removing any nasties etc seems to do its job but... I get so many errors about clients being out of date or the av on the client being 'inactive' when I can dial into one of the PCs that are showing as errors and find there's nothing wrong. I can scan (and detect dummy virus files) and I can manually pull down updates. I also have about 20 clients - different models of pc in different parts of school that won't auto update each morning. I have to select > right click > update. No idea what's going on. Emails sent to Sophos don't even warrant a reply. Sophos are useless with support in my experience. It also does spank the CPU. Never had a 100% cpu since the old 'intercheck' sophos days but it regularly does hit 45%-50% cpu. Updates are scheduled for each morning and a client scan is performed at lunchtime. One last rant about sophos... the error codes / knowledge base articles are a pile of cack. Some of the error codes I've had don't even have an entry on the sophos KB It's now got to the stage where if I cant reinstall sophos back onto a client within 15 mins I just reimage the client and redploy. I can't be arsed to piss about with Sophos any more. If I could look into using another AV I would but we're tied to it as its LA provided. btw the stand alone version of Sophos is v good in my experience. I use it at home and I install it on 'home use' laptops fro staff - no issues with it all
