Hi Just an addition to this thread... Does anyone know the Disable Command Code for the 'Formatting Consistency Check'? This is the wavy blue line when Word decrees that the structure of a sentence or paragraph doesn't reflect a standard format. eg if some typed in garbage such as kjhkjhkjhkh - it would prompt with a blue wavy line. I've found the option in Word 2013 > Options > Advanced > Keep track of formatting / Mark Formatting Inconsistencies . I just cant find the code anywhere!

Hi All We deployed Smart Notebook 16.1 on all our classroom PCs this summer. We've noticed quite a few performance issues with Smart Ink - symptoms include slow down of PC's e.g. frequent lag of mouse movement and relatively high ram usage of Smart Ink itself. On a couple of PCs I rolled back to Notebook 14.1 and the old version of Smart Ink - no performance issues - re deployed the PCs with 16.1 back on and we have the frequent slow downs. Has anyone else rolled out 16.1 and had any similar issues? Is this a common issue - I've not seen any reports of performance issues with 16.1 We're all 64bit Win7 and PCs are a mix of i3s, i5s with 4-8gb of ram and SSDs. So PC spec shouldn't be an issue (hopefully!!) Any pointers?

we use restricted network accounts for the exam accounts (currently around the 20 mark) - with the numbers we deal with / potentially dealing with its infinitely more efficient than using local accounts. In rare cases we have students who have back to back exams so we can remove completed work from their user areas without having to enter the exam room and manually remove work etc We tried local accounts last year and it was doable, but from a man power point of view not really feasible.

Hi Just looking for ideas on solutions to provide power and data to IT kit in an examination environment. At present we provide laptops for exams to students who may not be able to write - wrist / arm / hand injuries etc - and for those students who need assistive technology. Presently, we only have a small number of students who require this support so we tend to do an ad-hoc set up (mini switch and run power / network under matting to the individual desks). Our projections show a potential increase of students who may need to use IT in an exam over the next 2-3 years, so I've started investigating how to provide power and data to desks in an exam layout - without the need for mini switches, power blocks, cable matting. I was thinking of sinking the power / data conduits into the floor... has anyone got any pointers as to any solutions - products or companies - that they've used to provide something similar to the above? Thanks in advance for any ideas?

Waking up an old thread... but just browsed to it Ram is everything with Moodle. Disks next then cpu. For that number of potential users, you'd easily do it from a single box. But the post that mentioned 2 VMs - 1 db, 1 web - is totally spot on about having the option to expand. Hindsight, i wished I'd separated them for that very reason. You wouldn't need any form of load balancing or db pooling for <700 users - so having 5 servers like mentioned in another post is ridiculous. I have a Moodle of 700+ course pages, and 3000 accounts and had 212 concurrent users all doing assignments / activities as part of an FICT thing - my server didn't go above 20% cpu and 60% ram util. My server is a 6 year old dell, 2 xeons and 12gb of ram and 1 tb raid - not the fastest server in world The key to having a nice zippy moodle is php / mysql config and caching your php using something like memcache. Look after your php and you wont have any performance issues!

Thanks Jiser. I do have to say it's probably a scale above what is the 'norm' for a techie in our LA. We want a good quality person to join the team and thats reflected in the pay scale. +1 on that When I presented to SLT and teaching staff on the benefits of Moodle I never mentioned the word 'free'. Well except when I said Moodle was free to download. It costs my college in the time I spent config'ing and setting up and the time I currently spend developing it. I must admit technical support is minimal as I spent ages last summer setting everything up and checking / testing / tweaking everything - nothing has gone wrong with it yet. A ball park figure for me would be 3 months work and therefor wage for the total project.

Hi all... bit of a long shot but does anyone know of anyone or anywhere where I can get hold of some gig fibre cards for a 3com 4400? We're doubling up all our cards in the 4400s but some of the batch of our 'spares' aren't working Any pointers would be great! Thanks Karl

Sadly, we've tried various browsers - IE, Safari and FF and all have the same issue! We've ended up doing it through the command line via HyperTerminal but I'd still like to get the web end sorted!!

Morning all... Got a slightly annoying issue with our 3com 7550 switch... We've just upgraded the firmware to allow us to config the switch via web management, but when we logon via the web front end, we can login OK but the config pages are blank. We've created a new level 3 user for all protocols and logged on again but the config pages are still blank. When browsing the web front end in IE we get a java issue - 'object expected' pointing at libs/content.js on the switch. Is this a case of the content.js file being missing? I've spent ages going through the config guide (all 300 or so pages) but can't find any reference to this issue. HAs anyone got an idea as to what the issue is? Has anyone got a 7550 that I could 'borrow' a content.js file from? Any help would be welcomed! Thanks Karl

don't think you can just go and register a .sch.uk domain... speak to the LA they'll already have (or should have at least) a domain regsitered for your school, assuming you're in a state school. If you're an indy / public school use a .org type domain. As far as hosts go... I'd rec CS New Media top service and a top guy who runs the firm!

Looks a bit too 'busy' for me def dont like the bold font numbers along side the 'most read' section! It's prolly my age, but I dont like change!!!!

our IT guys have just bought 105 desktops... I think they had 1 dead on arrival other than that they seem rather good PCs for the money!

@gatt I'd guess this to be the same, but Migrating from Ex2003-Ex2010 is the same process? I plan to install 2010 on new hardware, set up, migrate boxes then switch off Ex2003. Sounds simple doesnt it

Exactly! No doubt one could work more productively in a 1st Class carriage, but saying that folk who don’t travel 1st Class are somehow different was the point of outrage. I’ve never had any issues working in standard class – I always choose a quiet coach and book seats nowhere near the loo’s or luggage racks so there’s not a lot of traffic passing me. I personally think anyone who is paid from the public purse, including myself as I work via the LA, should go for the best value. If they want 1st Class they should pay for the upgrade themselves

In my experience if you're good enough you're old enough! Apply for the job and even if you get knocked back it will be bloody good experience. NM jobs are tough to land so chance your arm. Our NM doesn't have a degree or sack fulls of MS Certs but he's pretty damn useful NM. Go for it!

yep, use Webman's CRBS I had one minor issue with it - probably my fault - but Craig gave me a solution within the hour. Not bad seeing as its free and Craig is only working on this in his spare time. Showed it to my SLT and they were happy with it too

That's pretty much how I deployed it - think I did a test system at home - then created a live system at school which was rolled out to two depts then the whole school. I probably spent a total of two full working days, hour wise, over two weeks to implement sharepoint, and I'm definitely not a techies techie. I would doubt any school could justify bringing in a consultant for a job as minor, in the greater scope of school priorities, as developing an intranet.
