Not from me this one but from IWB guru and fellow learning tech blogger Danny Nicholson (he said I could put the idea forward for inclusion in the booklet) A quick way to reuse the assets (images, flash etc) from a .nbk / .flp etc document to use for another task is to rename your .nbk / .flp file to .zip You can then browse through the newly created 'zip' file just like you would do if you'd compressed a bunch of files and copy and paste the assets into other documents.

A great to help id 'lost' pen drives is to get your pupils to create a file called info.txt (or something similar) which contains the pupils name / form and save it on the root of their pen drives. Helps id'ing the owner of the pen drive

we've never had a single request to restrict desktop customisation - no issues here at all regarding students spending more time moving icons than working... then again our SLT do encourage that classroom discipline issues - which 'fiddling' with things is - are dealt with through teacher discipline and not by us.

I think users should be able to rearrange or customise their desktops! I personally prefer like the recycle bin to be on the bottom right of the desktop for example. Why, because that's what works for me! I definitely wouldn't restrict pupils from customising their desktops too! As long as they can't delete anything that *needs* to be there or they add inappropriate wallpapers etc, give them the freedom to potentially be more efficient or productive. Putting one more, pointless IMHO, restriction on ict usage puts one more barrier in a pupils way. In a Primary environment I could understand keeping a unified desktop - to aid memory / familiarisation, but in a secondary... well not in my secondary at all!

it costs because its got far more features, usable features too .... I use / have used both considerably and side by side Wink doesn't come close. Wink is OK if you've got not spare coin, but £150, less with edu pricing, for industry standard software isn't a lot is it!

I don't think you can add user created items yet, but I would be interested in any projects using Lively you may working on....

if you're not talking about HUGE file sizes you could try Zamzar - Free online file conversion they offer vob format output...

im not an expert with joomla but when I was looking at it to replace the school website, permissions or the lack of flexibility / configurability with perms is what made me fire it off google for joomla acl... it may be what you need, it wasn't for me

its far more accessible than second life, it has limitations though but is a pretty exciting tool... been using it for about 3 weeks now cant wait for september to see if we can use it with the kids

which mobile network plans should I look out for... I'm currently with O2 but feel that they don't actually provide a lot of bang for the buck anymore - their customer services is pretty good though IMHO. I'm primarily after 'unlimited' web access - I know most cap on 1gb per month - and, if I'm lucky, unlimited texts. 3 seem too good to be true but I've heard bad reviews about their coverage and customer service. T-Mobile looks pretty good 40 quid for unlimited texts, 1000 mins and unlimited web - and an N95 8gb too Does anyone use T-Mobile or does anyone know of a similar / better package, etc I'm looking at around 40 quid a month or less... I've been thinking about setting up an on line chat for an activity with, possibly, our new Year 7 next year and wondered if anyone could recommend a chat application that was 'secure' ie where only those invited could participate in the chat activity. A hosted solution is preferred - I don't particularly want to have to set up something This will be a kind of pre activity to a bigger proposed project using E2BN Flash Meeting later in the year. to be honest you'd be 'lucky' to get jobs like that... any employer will look at your cv and realise that the job you're applying for is a stop gap job and that you'll bugger off as soon as you get a job in your own field. you are in a no win situation, I'm afraid. The longer you're on job seekers the more desperate you become to get a job and that desperation can either skew your though on which jobs to go for or worse still come across badly in an interview. I was in *exactly* the same situation as you - i applied for every job going - security guard, admin assistant, groundsman, even in the laundry at the local hospital if I got an interview, I was 'lucky' then out of the blue a primary I used to work for wrote to me and said that my old job was back up for grabs and would I like it back - 1 in a 1000 chance i know but don't give up hope. as Michael said really... I had exactly the same issue when I installed a new printer on a dept staffroom PC. I didn't remove the previous printers' driver(s) and got the error message you've been getting. I removed all 'old' drivers then downloaded the latest driver for the new printer - problem solved.

It looks like I'll be taking the lead with our Uniservity implementation and the 'putting powerpoint online' bit you mentioned is precisely what I need to get through to staff... it's not just an 'application' its, potentially, a new way of teaching and will only succeed if it's seen that way by staff / SLT etc. But the chance of me being bumped up to S01 is pretty slim to stray further OT for a moment @beeswax: do you use Uniservity in your LA?
