oooo painful... I looked into integrating Sharepoint with a VLE / VLEs and it looked a pretty tough job. Is it Classserver based? Luckily we're using an LEA wide Moodle install - a collective sigh of relief was had when we heard that news.

I had a written test for my current post and that was mainly centred on the school's network setup.... 2003 / XP, AD, Exchange etc This was coupled with some IP /DNS questions, if I remember right and a prioritise a list of jobs based on importance... There were a smattering of general IT questions which I thik were put in to see if the candidates had a general interest in IT beyond the workplace (always a good thing IMHO) I didn't get the highest score for the test :oops: but gained the post through my previous school based work experience

I must say that I'm not overly impressed with v3.... I seem to spend an ever increasing part of my day dealing with Sophos related probs...

you can use osql from the command line - have a look on the sophos knowledge base on how best to do that or you can use what I use - a utility called Query ExPlus. This allows you to query against any sql database you have. Far quicker and lighter to use than Enterprise Manager!!

yep and even after restarting - like the OP said - the warnings still show in the Console

On the PC's that won't communicate back to the console... check the system times on them. The only time I had this was when the PC system times were totally out of sync with my DC's. (don't ask why this happened they *should* sync I know!!) With regards to the numerous warnings about a restart being needed... this is one of the countless glitches I've come accross with the recent update to Sophos. If I remember right even the Sophos knowledgebase says you can 'ignore' these warnings, but for some reason you can't get rid of them from the console. This is where you have to delve into you sophos SQL database and remove them manually.. This is the sql I use to remove the 'restart warnings' UPDATE ComputersAndDeletedComputers SET LastAUErrorAlert = NULL from computersanddeletedcomputers join errors on computersanddeletedcomputers.lastauerroralert = errors.id where errors.number = 109 Use at your own risk. It works for me but please test it out in your environment or construct your own similar query. HTH

I've just had another look into this and there is a setting to disable Backround Printing I think it's in the Word11.adm (I've only got the Office11.adm installed hence me saying that it wasn't possible :oops: ) Here's a link to the 2003 SP3 adm files Clicky If you have a look at the Group POlicies Excel file in this download you'll see the setting on 2295 on the 2nd sheet in the workbook Cheers!!

You can right click on an infected PC and do a Full System Scan in v3 of the console. So that would be my first choice. Do you have HIPS enabled? When I had this enabled it was throwing up alert after alert all of which were 'false alarms'. If you're using HIPS take some time to set up your exclusion list right. The way I approached the general set up was to create a few policies - Desktops, Servers, DC's, Exchange etc and set the exclusions accordingly for each kind of box. Do a search on the MS site as this will give you a list of files / folders to exclude for stuff like Exchange servers and your DC's etc otherwise Sophos may harm system performance.

I don't think you can via the Office adm. The only way I know you can do it is through an MST when deploying. Well that's how I did it anyway. I guess unless you lock down Tools > Options aswell the little darlings could just enable the setting even if you used a transform.

I was told it isn't even transferable within the organisation. I think it's job specific. - i needed another CRB check when i took an additional extended schools teaching job. I also needed a CRB when I transferred from one school to another within the same authority (employer) When I moved from my previous school to my current one I phoned up the CRB people and they took the details of my new school and for want of a better word 'updated' my CRB. I didn't think you needed a new one when you moved jobs or changed roles. I was under the impression that they only needed amending to reflect any changes.

You could try running FileMon to see what files may be causing you the Access Denied error message

As we’re a training school we get quite a few new members of staff over the year and I’m thinking of putting together an introduction to the ICT facilities for the new starters. I’m looking for ideas as to what needs to be in it. In no particular order here’s the list of topics I think should be in it: Username / temp password / Email address – on detachable sheet (not sure on this) Introduction to the school facilities – no. of PC’s / Laptops / IWB’s List of network drives – what they’re for / who can access them etc How to access email ICT support contacts – email / phone Map of school highlighted with ICT / IWB rooms How to book ICT / IWB rooms How to book other facilities – laptops / projectors / meeting rooms Overview of the intranet (Sharepoint) AUP That’s what I’ve come up with off the top of my head. Any additions or suggestions would be welcome

I'd go with Promethean. I've worked in both Primary and Secondary with Smart and Promethean and in my experience Promethean are superior in terms of reliability and sturdiness. I'm also impressed with the quality and amount of resources for the Activboard. We've got a few dozen or so Prometheans in the school and we've only ever had minor probs with them - a few driver issues on the odd rogue PC. At my last school, which had Smartboards, I did have one or two monir problems with them - not being recognised etc nothing too bad but, touch wood, my Activboards have be trouble free. Witch does come up with a very good point with the height of the board. In a primary environment the height is far more of a factor than in a secondary. Promethean does have the Activboard+2 which is height adjustable and has the over arm short through projector (no expensive projector install) Not too certain on the pricing for the +2 though!! Another vote here for HP4250's We have one of these in our main office and it 'just works' - printing is fast and copes with everything thrown at it by our office staff. It gets a fair hammering by the office staff - a 12000 yield toner lasts about 11 weeks and I think I've replaced the maintenance kit once in the past 18 months. It's a solid workhorse of a printer. If you're taking about a usage that goes to several thousand sheets a week, I'd seriously look into doing what Geoff said and leasing a network photocopier with a good service contract!

We tried to have this sort of set up... try to get one solid, IT savvy teacher in each department and get them to be an IT Champion where they can pass on their expertise and enthusiasm for ICT to their dept colleagues. The other staff in that dept also gained a ‘friendlier’ face to go to with general IT related questions, questions they may not have had the confidence to approach us with. . This ‘post’ came with half a management point and after the recent teacher / management points shake up our previous Head decided that this particular duty didn’t warrant any extra remuneration. Needless to say the dept IT person naturally decided not to do it anymore and the school, ICT wise, is a worse place for it. Since then I have started using Tony’s term ‘manglement’ for SLT

Be subtle and play with their minds..... Just move the odd file or two into unrelated folders in their user areas or rename a file or two on a regular basis. Has far longer psychological effects than a simple file delete

Try... Tools > Options > Print Tab - Include With Document and uncheck Field Codes That's the only way I can replicate your problem!!!

Have you got field codes enabled by accidentt? Try pressing alt+F9 to see if that removes the [hyperlink...] bit

I wasn't aware of this problem until Sidewinder posted it. I assumed existing Explorer policies would've kicked in... but alas no. Since his post I've spent some time looking for a solution and disabling hyperlinks in Office was my first idea but, in our school at least, several depts - MFL in particular - have loads of Office resources which have links to websites in them. If I disable them en masse it'd cause more 'operational' problems for us. I've looked at trying to disable only UNC path links with no success. I don't want to start messing around with sec settings (List Folder Contents / Traverse etc) on my Netlogon etc folder either as I don't really have the facility to test any changes during term time. I even thought about down and dirty stuff like setting the contents of these folders to hidden and then applying a policy to remover the folder options from Tool menu in Explorer. Yes I was getting THAT desperate. At the end of the day our approach is that it isn't a major security threat. The kids can't write / modify / delete anything in the folders. They can however view all our scripts - which were not overjoyed about. We are closely monitoring / auditing files in the Netlogon folder just to see who potentially has been accessing it (none so far) and then using the AUP to handle any wrong-doers. Good thread though, as I was totally unaware of this 'get around'
