That didn't work for me. Using my test pupil account I could still navigate to server shares using the technique in the OP's post.

and mine...... the problem with those kind of lists is that they're about 10 years old but get passed around in 'have you seen this....' kind of emails. I'd bet that unless you have an old PC with an out of date BIOS that all of those are defunct.

In our experience the crash while extruding an object is related to graphics acceleration - if you disable that in options it won't crash and you can change that setting as a user (I think - not got my test Virtual PC on at the moment!!)

Agree 100% here If the clients have on access sacnning - which they should have - what's the point of having on access scanning on the server where the user areas are located too? You're scanning them twice! I have daily scans on the servers, and on access on the clients. With 2000+ users, 600 PC's and 20 or so servers we've never had a serious problem yet. Then again I would say that as I'm the Sophos guy at the school Sophos is far from perfect - i have to manually delve into the sql database sometimes to remove 'errors and warnings' but thats another story - but if it's set up right and if you spend some time getting the exclusions right on the servers it works! But don't have on access turned on on your file servers - or you'll have major performance issues!

In the middle of a similar job at the moment... isn't it fun to find so many naming conventions and handwritten point id's where you've had dozens of contractors in over the past 10 years 8O Anyway, your first method is what we do Cab ID and then point number e.g C1\001 - C1\128 C2\001 - C2\128 and so on It works for us, but we've only got about 9 or 10 cabs. there may be an easier method if you've got dozens and dozens of cabs.

Only come across this problem once before... with a Vaio with only a 15gb c:\ partition and a 55gb d:\ I used a 2k resource kit tool called cachemov to move the csc folder to the larger partition. Problem solved But like Plexer said, check the amount of allocated space for offline files. I can't think of a scenario where you would allocate all available space to offline files - unless you have a minute c:\ Just out of interest... if you delete the CSC folder doesn't that bugger up your sync'ing? Just sounds a bit dangerous to me!!

We've had this exact same problem... Is the first cell of the column in question a number? If so put an apostrophe before the number and see if that solves it. Even though we formatted the cells in that particular column to text the error still occurred. Adding the apostrophe solved it. The error looks like Word seems to ignore the cell formatting and id's the cell value as a number then parses the rest of that column as the same format. Quite odd really HTH Karl

It should have been a pretty quiet week for me - about 16 admin machines to install, upgrade of ActivBoard software, some tweaking of login scripts etc but got into work on Tues to find there had been a power cut over the weekend (holiday monday I think) which knocked everything over. UPS kicked in to keep the servers running but power cut killed the air con resulting in an ambient temp of 39 degrees in server room - needless to say servers had pink fit! 1 server (print / file server) refused to see the network - two reboots sorted that. Spent all morning restarting services and checking rest of network etc After that I found out that half of the rooms I need access to are being re-floored (knew nothing about this before half term) so I can't get into them! So now I've resigned myself to play with Virtual Server 2005 R2 for the rest of this morning until the flooring guys have buggered off! ahhh half term.... don't you love it

its a great salary for the area in question - prolly about 4k-5k above the average for a secondary school NM! i guess it's a pittance to some NM's in London / SE

thats exactly how we use it. We don't sit and monitor 'as it happens' so to speak, we generally retrieve footage after something has been brought to our attention.

Yep, perfectly legal as long as clear notices are placed informing people of the monitoring. We have cameras in our pupil toilets which cover the entrance areas to the toilets. Since being installed incidents of vandalism - blocking sinks / flooding the room etc - have significantly fallen according to our caretaking staff. Even if we don't actually catch an act of vandalism on the system we can generally match up faces who were in the room around the time of the 'incident' and get one of them to cough who it was etc.... Overall they are a great detterent as well as a great tool to assist after an incident

This is not really a ‘problem’ so to speak but I’m just curious as to what might happening…. Scenario: I created a ghost image for a batch of laptops – everything works fine, no probs at all. I then put that image onto two clean, straight out of the box laptops then logged onto the machine as local admin so I can add to domain etc. Now this is the puzzling part… 1 laptop presented me with the classic desktop / start menu while the other laptop had the XP desktop. Both identical machines, identical image, logged onto locally as administrator but had different themes. Any ideas as to why this could be? Like I said above, it’s not a huge problem at all, but it’s just bugging the hell out of me!!!!! Cheers

Hi I want to pull a list of users from from an OU in AD based on the date the user object was created. I've had a look at creating a new query but I can't see a date created / modified field with which to query. I'm sure it's possible, but I can't seem to see how! Any help would be great Thanks Karl

With reference to SLA's..... How does one implement and enforce internal SLA's? With external SLA's if a vendor, service supplier etc broke a service agreement one could follow some kind of recourse - terminate the contract, compensation or even sue in extreme cases. I just can't see how SLA's can work within a school, unless they are nothing more than guideline documents with a fancy name

Hi All Just wondered if anyone here has used ASP / ASP.NET pages to rerieve data from Active Directory. I'm currently looking at how to pull simple stuff from AD to create a staff look-up page for our intranet. It'd be great to hear from anyone who's done this and would be willing to pass on any pointers etc Thanks Karl

Pretty standard stuff here really, but we tend to keep to descriptive names which make things easier to remember... DC1 and DC2 reall speak for themselves... then we have appserver (for applications) storeserver (for pupil data) caterserver (for our cashless catering system) sims-sql and fms-sql for sims / fms and about another 7 or 8 but I thik you may get the gist of how we name our boxes. I just tried it out on a couple of machines with another WMP skin, and it didn't work. Rip was still accessible from Options/Rip/"Rip CD when inserted" option. I really didn't want to have to create a custom skin as it looked a bit long winded, but it looks as though I'll have to give that a go :-( I'll post if I manage to get it working. Cheers Karl

Ahhh I'm not on my own then! HUGE Publisher files are the single biggest pain the backside re: pupils' user areas! Then again wait untill you have members of staff who insert uncompressed .png's (another work of Satan) freshly created in Fireworks into a Publisher file!! Karl

Hi All! As a suggestion / request.... how about having a Training category so we can discuss aspects of IT training - share resources, links, training providor details? I'm sure most, if not all, of us here have either undertaken or intend to do some kind of IT training - Microsoft / Cisco / ITIL / A+ / ECDL etc. I think it'd be pretty useful category to have and allow those who have taken any of the above course to pass on advice etc! Hi All. Is it possible to restrict the use of, or even remove, the Rip facility on Windows Media Player? I want to try and do something to deter our pupils from a) filling up thier profiles with audio files and b) remove any copyright / illegal redistribution issues of having ripped audio files on our network I've been looking for a reg tweak or something to remove the Rip tab from media player for a week or two now and come up with zero. Any tips on how to achieve this (if at all possible) would be most welcome. Cheers Karl

Hi All My first post....... OK, the most useful tool I use on a daily basis is a little app that our Network Manager and I put together. It uses a Kix script to capture username, time/date, IP address and computer name at logon and inserts the data into a MSSQL db. We put a web front end on it (using ASP) so we could query the db. It allows us to query room usage for MIS type stuff, track who logged when and where (to monitor pupils who may swap user details etc) but most of all we can ID excatly which machine a pupil is logged on at (by querying their user name) when they come up to the server room and say "my computer don't work" but can't remember whereabouts they were sat in one of the IT suites. Doesn't sound much I know but it's VERY useful. If anyone wants the ASP / Kix Script just shout. Cheers Karl
