Since the Summer we have noticed an issue when we try to assign a SIM's user permissions with new users, we have until now in System Manager 6 or System Manager --> Manage Users altered the login name to first letter of Forename and surname and assign permissions but we now get a permissions error "SIMS(DFE number)_Username' is not a valid login or you do not have permission' when doing this, I am doing this and have System Manager permissions, it still seems to create the user with permissions but then the user can't login, if I go in again and alter the Username again this sometimes seems to fix the issue. I have raised this with our LEA support team who are excellent and looking into this just wondered if anyone had any ideas, any ideas or help appreciated.

Bump a couple of weeks left. We have had a reasonable response but just wondering if anyone else is interested so thought I would try a bit of bribery to see if it would drum up any more interest, we usually get free food from Interviews and SLT meetings is sort of an historic thing, so often get Sandwiches, cakes and the odd Bacon Roll . Early finish Holidays usually 3pm Monday to Thursday and 2pm on Friday again Historic. As I said previously good staff and SLT but also really good and in general well behaved students. Would suit anyone in the Birmingham or Solihull area although this is not a restriction. A bit more background we sort of manage as much as possible in house and allow remote access to everything. We have also developed a couple of our own systems one for remote access for Staff and Students which a couple of other schools in the borough now use and our own web based Student Progress analysis system which automatically extracts the Grades out of SIM's and produces some analysis again a few of schools have shown interest in this.

Really interesting I thought they were a bit hit and miss lately and possibly why we have just received a couple of Invoices for the same thing twice.

Nope as Number 34 has said you can do this using Connect we gave this a go as a trial and seemed to work fine but we use a Remote Access system so staff use this to do registers reports etc in PAR's, but when we tried Connect a couple of years back seemed like a good product as is all the Tasc systems we use to be honest.

My role is ICT Strategy Manager as well as usual Network stuff I also line Manage MIS department have worked on Developing some in house software for remote access and Student Progress tracking, I also Chair the ICT Strategy meeting which includes Head (Used to be Deputy Head) and the Business Manager, Governor responsible for IT and we look at how we can use ICT to improve teaching and learning and drive these initiatives through and use the schools Quality Assurance System to drive ICT in regards to help Teaching and Learning. Also have as a few people have said becoming a Governor can give you some extra experience I was a Governor at the last school I worked at and have just joined the Governors where I am, I also give presentations to Governors a couple of times a year in regards to the schools ICT and how we want to move forward, costs, what has worked what hasn't etc.

We helped one of our Primary Feeder schools with there's using WIX they did want a sort of professional looking site Ulverley so style may not suite what you are after.

You could try David Potts David Pott | SIMS Assessment Manager Consultancy and Training he does some SIM's training and consultancy. We went down a similar route although has become much bigger now we automatically extract the info out of SIM's into our own SQL Database then have created a web front end that produces analysed Data for staff so all subjects, subject, Class, Form and Teacher which is easy for staff to use and has some of the functionality used in excel such as filtering but also produced some custom reports that staff just click a button and it produces various overviews by All Subjects, Subject, Class and form and also allows staff to add intervention and produce some analysis of Intervention, to be honest though this has been quite a long time consuming process.

I looked at SLG a couple of times but didn't really feel it was the best solution was also expensive and looked complicated user end but did give staff access to SIM's to an extent remotely, haven't really looked at Go4schools Went for Tasc Software and Insight was very easy to set up and maintain support is excellent and second to none, this has been a great success here and students and parents have really come on board with this. It has reduced printing costs for reports as most only on Insight now. Also like that it is internally hosted so we can resolve issues on site but to be honest don't really have any but Parents and SLT are happier data stays on site in school. Two other schools in the borough have moved to Tasc and Insight once they had a look but a few schools in the borough are using Tasc and Insight.

Over the years have used RM, CSE and Burconix not used SCCM. Moved from CSE to Burconix. To be honest found RM a bit heavy as regards resources and a bit restrictive and unreliable although some tools were good but had too many issues but was a few years back and these may have improved. Found CSE really good for a few years but again became a bit unreliable for a couple of years I was with them and support although good for a few years not as good did to be honest seemed to have issues after a few years. I have also run vanilla Network, but have been using Burconix for a few years now in two schools and tools are excellent save me a massive amount of time and make things much easier and just make things simpler, save massive amount of time and more reliable, support is excellent and second to none. As you say advantages for opting for a tried and tested solution that is used in quite a few schools. Have a look at all three possibly as these can change or improve over time but personally think Burconix tools and support is second to none and wouldn't go back or change unless I had issues but have been using these for about seven years now and have been excellent.

Try these Burconix Ltd can't recommend these guys highly enough.

Just filling in the info for Demo kit. They came back with very competitive prices compared to my normal and three other suppliers but always go by quality, service and warranty as well.

Just wondering if anyone uses Ergo Computers and what there experience of them was for PC's in regards to quality of kit and reliability on delivery times and Warranty.

Tends to get done in the Summer here as any issues can get sorted and can fully test, this is unless a security issue is found our LEA scan all our web facing solutions so inform us of any issues only happened once when we have had to upgrade Moodle outside this schedule as the LEA warned us of an issue with the version of PHP. We also tend to go back to previous release if we feel this is better or new release is buggy etc.

Automated Progress and Intervention system Produces analysis based on students grades and links the data from our MIS has been received really well by Staff and SLT here. Online surveys, Staff, Students and Parents has provided some invaluable information for SLT and Staff to act upon.

To be honest setup Frog at my old school which was used well for a couple of years before I left and was used well after, although I know they have been having a lot of issues lately. We set Moodle up here although someone else in our Department did this and manages this. FROG has a lot of bells and whistles and looks nice (£27,000) + year on going costs. Moodle probably not as pretty but pretty customisable cost us very little I'd say £1,000 as can be virtualised so just sits on physical box. I wouldn't say either is much less work both took time and work to set up and maintain but not much difference. Staff seemed like and use both equally to be honest. Had a teacher come from another school that used FROG and she heavily used this but took to Moodle the same I asked after about 6 months what she thought she said there were a couple of nice features on FROG but in essence she preferred Moodle as it was easier for her to upload her resources. One of the big users of FROG and early adopters of FROG locally has made the switch to FireFly so could have a look at that, I went and had a look and it looked interesting.

Hi Could also try Burconix Ltd they do any thing from complete Network rebuilds to just supplying various bits and pieces. They are very competitive and will do as much or as little as you require. We have been using these for major projects for a few years with great success really reliable, a few schools in our LEA use these for major projects, also provide own management tools if required which are excellent and provide a Managed Service contract if you want but really as much or little as you want.
