  1. Reason free doesn't work for antivirus is it's mission critical, you can't wait for a developer to return home from his day job to investigate some new virus. You have to make it the developers day job. You MIGHT get away with it it everything was cloud based, the issue would be if someone installed a keylogger for example on a device, ok you've wiped it, but you wouldn't know that someone has previously installed it so you wouldn't know the damage has been done. So you wouldn't lock up that security hole. Antivirus is really the last line of defence, normally when that pops up, you know you've basically failed.
  2. Sure I've heard that too, but never tried it. I've got about 4 or 5 at home, I normally cancel then get the girlfriend to sign up every 12 months. Pointless staying if they treat you like sh1t and they give "new" customers £50-£100 M&S vouchers along with a new sky box and router (well we moved to Virgin broadband now since we moved to cabled house, we kept Sky tv tho cause she likes it )
  3. @bencole your a special school, I assume you have to apply for funding from the LA for pretty much everything. I doubt it would take more then 2 mins to get the funding for AV, still surprised it was included with the internet connection as it a critical part of the duty of care.
  4. Just be aware, Windows Server "unsupported" would mean restoring the database onto a supported OS then replicating the issue before Capita would deal with any problems you log. "Unsupported" SQL Server is... well lets just say you can't restore a backup from a higher version of SQL Server to a lower version of SQL Server. It's possible, it just involves a world of pain. I'd be tempted to run on a newer OS - especially after Windows Server 2008 was so problematic compared to R2 version. SQL Server is a no-no.
  5. You've been working with Capita too long!! Not say which year
  6. They've got it wrong, it isn't physical CPU, its cores. I think they're getting mixed up with threads. 12-cores is a bit nuts, 12 physical CPU would be insane!! Bit weird about over 12GB ram systems being down :S
  7. I'd wait, not heard they've released the new installer with SQL 2012 and it'll be silly to make the job harder, specially if you have no support at the moment.
  8. Depends really, how much is the RAM and is it a primary school running just SIMS with SQL Express, cause that's only going to use 1GB ram, so anything over 4GB is wasteful really. 8GB would be more practice unless it doesn't cost much more then go nuts! Like you said more disks would be the better option, a pair of good SSD ideally otherwise you need more disks.
  9. Question is, did you send the damp coal or was it a last minute attempt at getting onto Santa's good list?
  10. @Rawns you missed this bit. Just request it, then raise it with your account manager\Phil\Jon\anyone who'll listen why the heck when they de-authorised it they didn't have an option to exclude those already with it deployed and if they do, why it wasn't used. And why when you raised it they didn't task a helpdesk grunt with manually re-authorising it to those affect rather then waiting for them to request it.
  11. Primary school?
  12. Afraid not, still trying to find my copy he sent me, the joys of only having a 100mb mailbox He's retired now so I've got no hope of getting another copy to make it worse. I think setting up a separate DW for reporting would be a start. At least then you wouldn't have to fight reporting speed (less joins\logic) vs operational speed (less writes).
  13. @jinnantonnixx Did you ever get Bob Carswell document about maintenance plans? Basically it was a pretty word doc covering what your talking about but also some SIMS store procedures that are worth running regularly - like the valid memberships. It also covered other bits like renaming the sa account, testing your SQL backups and having a test system. edit: forgot to say it also included recommend frequencies as well - ie this every month, that ever day, and this, this you only want to run yearly.. about this time of year.
  14. It was actually for SIMS Bulk Import, but it uses Nlog and the same layout as they use (I think) so it could be ported. Will see how useful it is first.
  15. Ah yer, that's what I remember, but I thought I also saw a tool outside of S3 that allowed you to have a clean look, perhaps it was Discover. Coincidently I was looking at logs last night, will have to send you a copy to demo whilst your thinking about logs.
  16. Didn't they have a log viewer that made it easier to view, with filters?
  17. Yes, why would you want to undermind a framework that gives simple vendor-neutral comparison? Why would a vendor want to lure people away from a framework that gives simple vendor-neutral comparison? I'm sure the two aren't linked. Excuse me whilst I just go hoover my carpet.
  18. Lol, no, I'm sure I can arrange them to send it to you instead, just remember to pay within the 28 days otherwise the Capita mob come after you - oh and no tag backs!!
  19. Someone's just had the annual Capita licensing bill drop in front of him
  20. I would have hoped you'd logged a call now with your LA - http://www.edugeek.net/forums/mis-systems/128591-agents-not-loading.html
  21. I wonder what @Rawns is buying the S3 devs for Christmas in exchange for the new Solus3.Keys.DeploymentService.Public to be a S3 patch? Hopefully he hasn't forgotten about the M40k tax!!
  22. God your evil @vikpaw!! Surprised @PhilNeal hasn't pulled out the Partnership Xchange guns :S
  23. Thought you'd use something platform agnostic, like Xamarin. Also, Blackberry is dead.
  24. Not sure why he needs to log a case personally. Like @pete said this isn't anything new, I was under the impression that the Session ID collision was because the web server failed over\got restart and reissued your session id because you couldn't afford the performance hit of using SQL server for session state so it remembers active sessions after a reboot. Surely your technical team can confirm it restarted sometime before 10:40 today.
  25. I've done another release that includes all the fixes\workarounds - SIMS Bulk Import - Download: SIMS Bulk Import - 1.7.22
