I'd be interested in how much people value the "cloud" aspect. By "cloud" I mean someone else's hardware and really I mean SaaS, so fully managed - software updates, hardware, backups. Just wondering if the added value of a fully managed service has increased popularity since ransonware is on the rise. I've heard a few places being hit and finding out that even their oldest backup has been afflicted and rendered useless leaving them in a sticky situation.

It's the @@servername that also gets overlooked. So if you query the SQL Server it thinks its name is still the old one. Simple fix: sp_dropserver <old_name>; GO sp_addserver <new_name>, local; GO Again, LA\SIMS Support Team should have advise (its their job after all)

Safeguarding is critical. No one can argue that. My comment was its it "odd" that Capita are "concerned" now they have a new product to sell. Electronic solutions have existed for many, many years. It's not like computers are a new invention that's just appeared this year! Over 8 years ago on SupportNet folks were talking about how other LAs recommend schools handle safeguarding and could you just use SIMS.

I think we both know the Teflon coated DfE deal with terms and methodology. They don't get bogged down with the detail like paper vs electronic. Especially when it means schools will have to throw money at certain software companies

My understanding of RM CC3/4 was it was a overlay, they did all the complex bits. It, putting it bluntly, meant you didn't have to hire people which as much experience\knowledge vs vanilla network which meant you didn't have to pay them (your staff) as much. If you're ditching the contract with RM, you basically need to get a new expert. If you've already got an expert then ditch CC3\4 and save some dosh

It's free, recommended by the supplier and has next to zero red tape, how did it take most folks to roll out SOLUS3 fully? Now try doing something as complex as a MIS!! If they were to charge, they'd have to do some actual real work - ideally sticking a upload button into SOLUS3. Which could turn into them building a backup tool.

Kinda going off topic, but I wonder why Capita hasn't produced a test dev Azure Quickstart Template? - https://azure.microsoft.com/en-gb/resources/templates/ - @PhilNeal. For those unaware, all Microsoft Agreements these days comes with Azure credit, this is "free" credit to run services on Azure such as a virtual machine in the cloud (to tease you into the cloud). The quickstart template is basically a button. You press it, log in to Azure and boom, you have a configured server. So why hasn't Capita produced one? Serious question. Click button, log into Azure, enter the url and password for the SIMS setups, upload SIMS backup. Login to VM and you have a test machine. Security wise you would limit the IP to your own IP, you'd upload the data over HTTPS, delete the VM afterwards, auto generate random secure passwords blah blah blah. So why hasn't Capita spent, what a day or 2 doing it? Surely it'll only take a few schools asking how to setup a test machine to cover the cost, plus you've got a air tight way of ruling out "environment" issues. Got issues? Can't replicate it? OK, spin up test VM, oh look, it works ok in Azure, must be your setup. Think you should be using Standard edition, pick the one with Standard edition.

Then you'd just deploy an updated connect.ini via SOLUS3 You would never store them locally, but again, you wouldn't want to the store them in a folder everyone can get at
