Historically data would not need to physically exit the school, the "plethora of SIMS online bits" are all new, and I would hope schools are\have updated the data collection sheet to reflect this. Again - how does Capita handle if individuals refuse to give permission?

Out of interest - how do you link\filter that to data collection UDFs? Just thinking parents might be happy with the school holding that data and Microsoft, but not Capita.

Again, if they are too busy, why would they close SIMS? It takes an age to open \ Why would they remember to close SIMS vs pressing two buttons?

It's the same as Outlook - just passes the user token. It doesn't reauth. Again - it's a false wall. Pupils shouldn't be on a computer logged on as a member of staff - it just makes a mock of any auditing. If you really want to add a unnecessary barrier you could RemoteApps or something \ hosted.

Nope. That's very bad advice. SIMS Auth pretty easy to hack - it doesn't get locked out for starters. It's better to use Windows Auth then use the build in OS stuff then some crooked system someone at Capita created decades ago (clever as it was - it's v.dated). I'm guessing you have a S drive, I'll wager there is a census file - which is basically a plain text data dump and possibility payroll info on there. Better to press Windows + L then setting up a false wall

Hey, it's do-able, its just not gonna be nice or pretty. Ideally, you'd use SSIS to load the data into SQL. No chance. If you use use Office 365 Forms you could hook up Power BI. If you use Access web thing you could point SSRS at it (as the data is stored in a Azure SQL DB).

Contact your payroll provider, they should be able to provide the file in the correct format and have the required FMS settings. If they don't, don't attempt to do it yourself! Switch payroll providers if they refuse to work with Capita to get the FMS settings to import the file. Reason begin you need to payroll provider to agree they will always send the file in the correct format. If you get the FMS settings incorrect and it imports - what Phil fails to tell you - is that you'll be liable to a large Capita bill to write a patch to fix it and lots of questions from the auditors for the next few years about it. Seriously, if a payroll provider is aimed at schools it should be able to interface with FMS!

SQL Express is limited to 1GB RAM and 10GB db - time to throw money at Microsoft for a SQL Standard license. Wait, I thought Bromcom was cloud based?

What about GDPR? If you migrate to a hosted MIS - how do you get consent to be allowed to put their data outside of the county or even country with a third party? Could you legally hold the data if you have no way of contacting the subject should something change or a data breach?

SalamanderSoft isn't cheap, but it's cheaper then doing it manually and it isn't the sort of thing you should cut corners on especially as its a critical thing for GDPR \ Data protection \ data security. Just my thought.

I get what you mean, but back in the real world... Being "compliant" on day 1 is going to be very different from being "compliant" on day 100. From a enforcement point of view - it would be highly unlikely they would target schools first. GDPR isn't limited to just this Nothing stopping you contacting them directly (I'm sure some folks will regardless of the list) - this would help also as they'd much prefer to publish something vs getting spammed with requests.

Take a look at C:\Windows\sims.ini. SIMS moves at a glacial pace, look how long it's taken to get folks to adopt the free stuff that Capita are activity pushing? Microsoft suffer from the same thing, Win10 is what, 3 year this year, still not widely adopted. This is before anyone comments on how long it takes Capita to develop anything - bulk import UDF anyone? I release an open source app, what 5 years ago, physically had the code on github for anyone to grab (using the SIMS API \ business objects too) - still slated to be release later this year. FYI there are other MIS system out there PS: I have no idea what you mean, I mean surely everyone knows what those lovely long codes mean - especially when they link to awesome up-to-date KB articles... oh wait..

SIMSLOAD is horrid and needs to have die when we all moved to Windows 2000. - Users should not be able to write to Windows directory or the program files directory. - IT should be proactive not reactive and push software, you shouldn't have to wait 5 mins for an application to update just to spend 2 mins taking a register Surprised Capita hasn't spoke about using the Windows Store

Sorry for derailing - but just a bit sick of "won't someone think of the internet connection" argument when talking cloud MIS. In terms of disaster recovery its lot easier, as you've said, its a lot of extra work to have a replica and you've got a lot of exceptions vs get some where with internet connection and carry on working, like another school or even some local office space for the backoffice functions - I'd hope the school already has a plan it terms of where you'd physically put pupils so its not that wild an idea. I get someone schools it's still a bad situation in terms of connectivity but like I've said before that's a bigger issue and the numbers are reducing.
