I have been asked by a student to convert some .mpg files to be imported into a Mac. Any pointers as to the filetype i should be converting to, any maybe some software for the job. Cheers

They are downlaoded, installed and managed with itunes.

I have the DLINk DIR-615 from Virgin, IMO a load of pants. It needs resetting every week or so. The lights are on, my PCs are all connected but no internet access. My Linksys WRT54G was much more reliable, shame it doesn't like the 50Mb line.

I've used Ontrack in the past, excellent service, and you can check online to see if the file you need recovering can be recovered before you agree to the recovery. It was just under a grand to get 40Gb recovered on a completely dead drive.

What's stopping you from testing it? a 250w PSU should power that motherboard for test purposes. All new PSUs should be 20+4 pin, so there should be no compatability problems.

You need to identify working memory and a psu. Remove the motherbaord from the case (it might be shorting out). Unplug hard drives cd roms etc. Connect up the power supply and memory and turn on. (A screwdriver carefully placed to touch the 2 front panel pins). As a final test swopping the cpu into a known working motherboard would identify a faulty motherboard.

Yeah, we use a band here for all our student laptops and g for staff. Our newer laptops have n capability but we don't use it.

I think the Micso guy is wrong, you need headphones/headset that supports the A2DP bluetooth protocol if you want to stream audio to them.

Normally on laptops the trackpad is seperate to the buttons, and the buttons are part of the case assembly. I can't say that for definate with the Toshibas though. I have repaired loose buttons in the past with a soldering iron, melting the plastic that has become broken sometimes with excited pressing. Also might be worth cheching the switch under the button hasn't been damaged.

I'd avoid HP laptops, they had issued with graphics failing due to heat issues a while back. I personally favour Dell laptops, and would take one over a Toshiba.

Ex-mechanic here, avoid radweld and the like. It's great stuff as a temporary bodge in an emergency, but i've seen many problems caused by the stuff, and i personally have a blocked heater matrix because of the stuff, done by the previous owner.

I think you should be paying National Insurance if you work for yourself. You still declare your earnings at the end of the year. Speak to Inland Revenue, the woman i spoke to recently was very helpful.

Speaking from experience, it's only advisable to set up or register a LTD company if it's your only job. There is more tax to pay, paperwork is doubled and you need to get an Accountant to do your books. As a sole trader, there is national insurance to pay, that can either be monthly DD or quarterly, it's currently £3.40 a week. Your books can also be done by yourself.

I was a mechanic for 5 years, and am good friends with a guy that runs his own garage, specialising in diagnostics. He doesn't have 1 machine to plug into the car, he has a few, and even then he gets his scope out to check individual components. It's very rare the problem is the ECU, it's usually down to faulty or failed sensors. If you did buy an OBDII connector there is no guarantee it would tell you the problem with your car.

Recently in one of out IT suites i noticed the fans were louder than normal. I took the top of the case off and a thick layer of dust on top of the heatsink was noticable. It took me an hour or so to remove the dust layer from 24 machines. I used tweezers to remove the dust without removing the fan or plastics. The computers were then much quieter and i guess will last longer.

Pentium 4 processors with a 478 socket have a fan that blows down onto the heatsink, i've cleaned loads of the computers here and for private customers, where a layer of dust builds up on top of the fan and stops the cooling effect entirely and leads to overheating. Some dust is also a conductor of electricity so if its covering a motherboard there is a chance that it could cause premature failure. I've certainly found it to be the cause of many a power pack death.

I have a bracket on my work PC with 2 e-sata connectors and a power. The e-sata cables are molded to the bracket but are just standard sata connectors on the end.

We have Philips SHP2000 here, they were about £5 or £6 a pair and they are sturdy.
