  1. The 2009 MBP had a known graphics issue which was cured properly by reballing. Yes you could reflow but it never lasted. The balls need replacing with leaded ones. Your 2011 does not have this issue and ovening your board will do nothing for it only bad things. 190 is not enough to melt lead free solder anyway. Needs to be about 230. Users never claim it was damaged by water, but it's clear to see. Here's my BGA rework station.
  2. Board here cheaper 661-6078 ' Apple Macbook Pro Core i5-2415M 2.3Ghz Logic board – Servercom Or find someone who does component level repair.
  3. It's rare that logic boards can't be repaired. What's the problem with the MacBook ?
  4. A special bumper !
  5. I believe the screen is a B116XTN02 .3 which are £25 new, delivered from ebay. If the keys have been picked off by the kids, can you not just buy an American keyboard and attach single keys, or is the damage more severe ?
  6. I paid 2k for my 57 plate focus estate 2-3 years ago. It came with a full service history and a list of every bit of work that had ever been done on it and a lowish 115,000 miles. Apart from regular oil changes every 7 thousand miles that cost me £50 and a couple of tyres it's cost nothing extra apart from a couple of MOTs it's gone straight through. It has a device fitted that means nobody drives in my boot and kids in their toy cars don't race me either, it does 70-80mpg on the motorway and averages 50mpg with normal driving. I'm on 150,000 miles and as long as i keep up with the oil changes i expect another 100,000 miles out of it.
  7. If I had the spare disposable and wanted a new vehicle I'd look to purchase a pre registered car. My friends wife has just purchased an Antara, 28 miles on the clock but with about 8k off the purchase price. 3 years servicing thrown in too. Subscription services are in the interests of the seller not the purchaser, just because more and more are going that way doesn't mean they are a good thing. Tax on an EcoSport will be next to nothing compared to service prices. My mum leased her car when she worked for the council, one of the benefits was that that it was picked up and dropped off when it was serviced and it came with full breakdown cover. There was also a spare car available when hers was off the road being serviced or fixed when her son crashed it (this was a council leasing scheme) so yours might be different and not come with the extras.
  8. I was going to suggest CPU but problem solved.
  9. I liked the variety of "side jobs" so much I left the school I was working in to do it full time. Those that would invite me to dinner are friends and I do their fixing for free. Everyone else pays. I guess it comes down to how much value you put on your time and whether you're learning new skills on the personal jobs. Some of the small cheaper jobs have led to much bigger well paid projects and clients.
  10. No, you had an opportunity to check and send back and you missed it. I imagine trading standards will tell you, you should have checked it on arrival. Holidays are covered by ABTA, this purchase was covered by ebay for a short time. Be thankful it's a £43 printer and not in the hundreds.
  11. Nothing beats the "mum look" !!
  12. Supermarket fuel will make very little difference if any to performance. It's the long term effect on the engine where it does count, it tends to have less/no additives in which lubricate certain parts like idle control valves etc. which lead to higher maintenance costs. One in four or five fill ups with decent fuel should alleviate this problem.
  13. Looks very much like the bottom LEDs in the screen aren't lighting properly. A replacement LCD should fix it.
  14. Whilst we all wouldn't touch a sealed non genuine Apple charger, these Deltas would be difficult to fake. Whilst not impossible, they are not a high volume or high cost item. The ones I see are either pulls or repaired/reconditioned pulls. Genuine Delta power supplies are made in China as are the majority of Apple stuff anyway. I'm interested to know what you've seen fail due to non gen parts, apart from the obvious fake chargers. I repair down to component level and apart from their love of glue and the trickiness due to their love of aesthetics, there's very little difference between Apple and other manufactures apart from a few custom ICs.
  15. The main reason stuff from China is cheaper is because they sell without tax and duty and the shipping is subsided by the Chinese government. They also sell a lot of pulled stuff as they recycle lots of ewaste. One of the worlds largest sellers of second hand TV boards is in China. Yes they can fake stuff and yes they can make super cheap laptop/desktop power supplies but these power supplies are made by Delta and everything is on show. I'm not saying they can't be faked, but i highly doubt it, they are not a high volume item and if you purchase through ebay or Aliexpress you're covered by their guarantees anyway.
  16. This suggests they will be waiving the £5 fee if they are not returned. EE Power Bar recall: Telco will waive £5 fee for laggards • The Register
  17. Not USB but i have recently had a quote of just over £1600 for a 250Gb 2.5" hard drive. Level 4, internal mechanical failure.
  18. Maybe it needs to come to an expensive/sticky end for your boss to change his ways and do things properly. Save to device, copy to USB stick. Send it to Ontack, they do a free evaluation if the above software doesn't work.
  19. Congratulations !
  20. What are the input sources and have you swapped the amp for one in another room to identify if it's the room/setup or the amp.
  21. Check the contacts on the hard drive PCB aren't to oxidised and clean them with a rubber. Check the TVS diodes, there are usually two, one on the 5v line and one on the 12v.
  22. Yes, this is the standard response from Apple, they don't do component repair only replace new logic boards. I was thinking more third party repairer.
  23. It looks like liquid damage and it's probably repairable. Some of the equivalent priced Windows laptops take measures to stop water ingress Apple do not.
  24. They had a falling out, a summary here Arduino v. Arduino | Hackaday
  25. Newcastle College of Art and Design, but i lived in one of the Uni halls of residence. An awesome year.
