UK Copyright Law and US Copyright Law are two wildly different beasts I'm afraid - in the UK, doing as you've stated is not legal, and simply constitutes as distribution of pirated material. (Note the flags under each poster's username)

[sims] Multiple SIMS instances on one PC Pulsar.exe Parameters
Marci replied to Steven_Cleaver's topic in MIS Systems
http://www.edugeek.net/forums/mis-systems/131313-fyi-multiinstance-switch-pulsar-exe.html EDIT: Looks like SOLUS upgrade destroyed it... Going off the above search results, something prior to 28/3/2015 removed the ability to use it. Can't get to the actual forum topics as currently MyAccount is erroring for every forum link returned by a search result. EDIT2: Scratch all the above - still works! -
As per @Brimstone - FAST storage network dedicated solely to the suite, all machines with gigabit links. Personally I'd be looking into the recommended workflows for operating whatever software you're using in a group environment... If you're working in Creative Cloud land for instance, you can set Adobe Media Encoder up with watch folders... have it re-encode all raw source footage down to H264@1080P with a lower bit rate and delete the original once complete. Get all students to dump raw footage into this watch folder, then pick up the processed footage from the output folder before they start to edit / post-process. Up to you whether you do this serverside or locally on the clients, but there's no need to be working at or storing full bitrate AVCHD files etc. Again if working in Adobe you can then have them export jobs out to the Media Encoder running serverside... you effectively end up with a small render farm. Kids spend the lesson editing, and at the end hand it off to the server to render and you have presets configured on the client so again they render automatically in a more sensible format in terms of bitrate and storage consumption. They can then collect the output footage at the start of the next lesson. S'handy if you start having students working in AfterEffects / Cinema3D / 3DS Max (all of which also have a server renderer workflow - we have a handful of P16 Media students using these, especially now that 3DS Max & most other Autodesk software are now free for edu students & staff) where rendering can be very time consuming - means they're not just sat about in a lesson watching an egg timer. Get the footage & workflow optimised before it heads off to storage network, and you start to reduce the cost & resource requirements. Means having a simple, planned & documented workflow for staff and students to follow, that's covered in their first lesson in the subject.

Sounds like you don't have required Group Permissions in SIMS - there are SLG groups you need to be a member of. Also, depending how it's set up, if you're not teaching staff then you may not see much - it doesn't really have a setup for non-teaching staff. Best to create a fake teacher account assigned as a co-teacher to a few classgroups in the timetable and use that. If you fill it in with a reason when it asks, then IIRC somewhere our IT dept get a notification to approve the request.

[sims] Creating marksheets for all assessed pieces of work
Marci replied to Flaming8's topic in MIS Systems
We have data extraction points throughout the year that we refer to as DX1 through DX5. These are created as resultsets in SIMS. We then have the subject aspects. I use one template then clone it for all subjects. This is done by finding the department with the requirement for the most number of units. If BTEC this could be up to 12 units. If AS or A2 then generally 3 units dependant on subject specification. It's up to each department's head to determine / remember what they're referring to as their 1st Unit, 2nd Unit, 3rd Unit etc. SIMS is kept as universally generic as possible to minimise repetitive maintenance / constant changes on subject specific basis, so once you know the most units for each qualification level you're good to go. This also makes setting up Individual Report templates much quicker and easier too... you just tell it to skip empty rows. If they're particularly hopeless at remembering this, you can just change the column headers on the marksheet template to match their particular requirements, but keep your aspects themselves to a generic naming convention. So for us, each subject then ends up with GCE AS 1st Unit to 3rd Unit, GCE A2 1st Unit to 3rd Unit & BTEC 1st Unit to BTEC 12th Unit aspects, & whatever overall aspects are needed (overall points / grade / ALPS grade / L3VA / target / whatever). For analysis we pop out all the aspects for each extraction point and throw them into SISRA as a tracking point so staff can refer to them online from any device / compare against previous tracking points / targets / results. -
In terms of YouTube / Vimeo etc, you may not remove / download content from YouTube... end of. You may stream it from their site, or via their sanctioned embed code on your own VLE / Site. Have a look from about half-way down in this post: #7

SIMS Technical Support Officer -£24,987 - £37,847 - London
Marci replied to lsparks's topic in Educational IT Jobs
Slightly confused: where is the role based... London or Leeds? -
Capita have just confirmed that this is by design - nothing to worry about. It's because the end date has passed for all the student members of each course. Won't affect results handling / PI Data.
-
3 other schools (via SSAT DataManagers Email Group) have also just confirmed they have the same issue.
-
Morning - has anyone else found that Course Manager (in 7.164, Summer 2015 release) has for no apparent reason set all of their Courses within Course Manager to 'Inactive'?? Not sure how this would affect incoming results on Wednesday, but have raised a ticket with Capita on the matter as I'm not setting them all back to active only for SIMS to randomly decide to deactivate them again of it's own accord first thing Wednesday morning.

Article: Happy SysAdmin Day 2015 - Now here is a prize
Marci replied to ZeroHour's topic in Legacy CMS Comments
Hmmm - a reply here, or here? EDIT: so replies on the article show up in both places, but replies on the forum remain in the forum. Do you get a prize for also working out which reply counts? -
Go > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup > Window > Show Audio Devices Select output on left, right click (or alt+left click, or 2-finger tap) > Use this device for sound output (for Apps) Select output on left, right click (or alt+left click, or 2-finger tap) > Play alerts and sound effects through this device (for System sounds) Then you should be able copy /Library/Preferences/Audio/* (2x files, one defines the devices, the other the system options) across to your machines via AppleRemoteDesktop / WGM. NB: This is on Yosemite. File location may not be the same on Mavericks or lower. You'll need to be looking for com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist and com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist

To be honest, the whole vba side of things was far superior in 2011 than it is in 2016... so I'm still running both versions.
-
Vba editor (on Mac) remains more of a Cba. Has a tendency to crash if your edit causes the project to reset - best advice: stop the project then edit... avoid editing in break-mode. The non-parity between functions remains. In short, use an external ide for vba editing (eg: Coda in vbScript mode) then copy/paste into the excel vba editor. No form designer either - MS expects 'serious' development to be done on the Windows vet via boot camp/parallels... Essentially - 'we've made it prettier on OSX' is about the size of it. We get the newer charts etc, but no slicer support... no web service data source support - continue to use the 3rd party plugins if you want it as MS have said they're not bringing those features to Mac... blah. We're still several steps behind the windows ver with no guarantee of cross-compatibility on some of the (major) new features.
-
Hope they've fixed the myriad of vba problems that were unaddressed in every preview release...! Even the most basic functions were causing overflow errors in the first preview, and still were in the last update.

Projectors and Lights in parties
Marci replied to robertkbrown1984's topic in AV and Multimedia Related
Mad Mapper, TroikaTronix Isadora, Resolume Arena... Personally I use Isadora, which can control lighting via DMX / ArtNet with suitable USB to DMX hardware (Enttec), and output to as many projectors as you can connect to the machine (retina Macbook Pro = 3), and map each output via warped slices or a 3D mesh of the surface being projected on to (usually acquired via Kinect). See Projection mapping in Isadora | TROIKATRONIX Input feeds and effects are either handled directly in Isadora (Video, Image, FreeframeGL), or fed in via Syphon from other apps (such as Magic Music Visuals, Delicode Z-Vector), or are live feeds via Firewire / BlackMagic hardware. -
I'm sticking to rFactor2... pCars just drives too gamey for my liking.
-
I've just recreated that here, and it prompts fine... can you screenshot the full report / fire over a report export? EDIT: altho wish I hadn't foolishly hit OK without limiting it down to a reg group first - takes an AGE to run when you've got 1800 students. EDIT2: Nevermind - it just bombed with Value out of Range.

What server spec are you using to run Moodle?
Marci replied to localzuk's topic in Virtual Learning Platforms
1 - Peak concurrent, 600 users 2 - 16Gb 3 - 4x 2Ghz vCPU 4 - No, Only at login. MySQL is handed off to a separate dedicated MySQL server with a dedicated 10Gb link, same spec but running Ubuntu (the one above runs CentOS / WHM / cPanel). Both servers are virtualised. -
Ditto - could you fire me details over also please...!

We have a template which contains 5 or more aspects for every subject at Post16, set to show the most recent result or result description from within a date range. For some reason these don't work and I've had to set them all to filter by result set instead, but it only affects this one template. If I recreate the template from scratch it appears to work fine, so I'm stumped on that one!

Weird AV problem, is it the audio file or something else?
Marci replied to Tricky's topic in AV and Multimedia Related
Depends how each individual track's been mixed as to the level of effect phase inversion has, and what effect that has on the system. With this particular tune, inversion makes the vocals leap out massively. I've got tracks where doingso makes the vocals vanish entirely, others where phase inversion simply removes the kick drum, bass & snare (items typically summed to mono in the LFE band if the track was mastered with multiband compression). Chuckster's point is valid within the same context - a dicky jack socket which is bridging across the L & R poles or shorting L to Grnd or R to Grnd will also produce phase issues (or a dicky driver which isn't digitally detecting & switching the socket from one role to the other correctly - usually it's looking at impedance to determine what mode it needs to be in). -
Weird AV problem, is it the audio file or something else?
Marci replied to Tricky's topic in AV and Multimedia Related
Nothing wrong with the MP3. Plays fine on everything here with no issues / distortion, been compressed at PPM-6 by the looks of things which is standard for broadcast. First place I'd turn to would be simply turning the volume down on whatever is playing the MP3. Panning left or right decreases overall output level. How much by depends on what panning law is selected within your software. I'd also check whether your wiring is in phase from source to mixer, mixer to amps, and amps to speakers (ie: the consistency of hot to hot, ground to ground, neutral to neutral). If I invert the phase of either left or right channel on it's own, the vocal leaps out of the mix ridiculously loudly (which would result in unexpected overdrive if the system was set close to gain limits). If I convert to mono with the phase inverted on either side, the overall level drops to almost none existent (as the waveform is inverted, and one side cancels out the other, which would result in almost no perceivable sound). Sounds as tho somewhere within your setup, the phase is being inverted by dodgy wiring. -
Issue appears to be solely with one of our previous templates. Recreating it from scratch and problem vanishes. Sods law it's the biggest template we have. *eyeroll*
