Kaite, you should buy a nice new shiney server (or two). Buy Windows Server 2003 enterprise. Set it up from scratch. It isn't as difficult as it sounds, most things work out of the box. Set up you group policy as you want it. Play around if you have time. Ask on here and search the Forum - there will be loads of threads relating to what you want to know. All the best!

The only problem I can see now is slower logon times if the computer has to create a local user profile everytime someone logs on.

We will be trying out the new SIMS Mobile solution as soon as it is officially released. We are just buying one license and setting it up for PE. Will be using WPA for security. PE staff who want to register in the gymn or on the field do not want a laptop - it is too bulky and could get knocked.

An AUP covers the schools back! It is't necessarily going to make much difference in the school, but in a serious case, it will make a difference in the court room. We don't give internet access unless an AUP has been signed by both parent and pupil. And the AUP outlines correct behaviour alongside sanctions for miss use or the network / internet. No AUP will work without consistent procedure and support of senior management. But when you have that, you have a strong arm to play. Of course, you have to lock down your network, but without an AUP, you are saying to the kids, "come and get my network". If they think there will be no comeback for trying to hack / abuse the internet they will do it more regularly and more persistenly than ever.

Was it CSE who told you that? They installed ours and we've had PEO cameras outside for over a year now without any problems, apart from the odd spider making a comfy web in front of the camera! Milestone does appear to be better software but it's a case of will you use it if the other has the features you need? Milestone is expensive compared to others. You could ask CSE to price up the alternatives.

I am trying to get a HP PDA (Pocket PC 2003) to connect to our wireless network which uses A radius server. I have tried to use the HP Enroller, where you have to enter the username and password of a certificate and the address of the server the certificate is set up on. I am doing this but getting nowhere. I don't see how it can retrieve the certificate anyway if it is not connected to the network to begin with. Has anybody done this before, or is there another way to get the certificate installed?

Remote Desktop, but I have plugged in a monitor / keyboard / mouse and tried it from the machine. Exactly the same problem.

NetworkGeezer and DMcCoy: thanks for advice but please read from beginning of thread. I can't take ownership because I don't get the security tab when I look at the properties of the folder. All I get is 'General', 'Customize' and 'NFS sharing'. And I have tried shortname. Every time I try to perform any action on the folder, whether to access it, rename it or delete it, I just get Access Denied, in Windows or from the command promt. If this were a client, I would probably take the HD out and boot it up as slave in another pc. But this is our NAS server which actively holds all of our documents for staff and pupils. At least this isn't a big problem at the moment. It's not stopping the pupils doing any work and I don't think they have anything in the folder they are in desperate need of. I'm on holiday next week so might come back to this then.

Thought you might have a Linux solution. So you think I should boot up my NAS server running Microsoft Windows 2003 Appliance edition with a Linux System rescue CD? Would that work?

Thanks BradP - tried that and it just tells me access is denied. Here is the path on the server of the folder: d:\documents\year04\[studentname]\my documents\[x] my stuff [x]\[x] picz [x] I know the [x] make it look suspicious, but I'm not sure that is anything to do with it because right next to that folder is another one with the same type of filename and that's fine.

What would be the line for set acl?

Thanks for swift reply Alan.d - tried from server. Exaclty the same problem / symptoms Ian.B - Tried that but it didn't work. The files names are not long at all. andy - it's not this, I can see the security tab on all other folders surrounding this one so it's not a folder options thing. I've just noticed a folder buried in one of the pupils other directories with the same name and the same problem. Something has gone wrong at some point here.

I have a kids folder which has another folder in that which has another folder in that. Are you following me yet? Anyway this particular folder wont allow access to it by anybody. Not the owner/creater, not the administrator of the domain, not the local administrator. You can't rename it, move it, delete it. When you go to properties, not all the tabs appear - you only get 'General', 'Customize', and 'NFS Sharing'. No security tab, so I can't take ownership of it. Under General, it tells me it is zero k and contains no files or folders. I even tried deleting / renameing it from the command prompt but no luck. Definately gremlins. Can anyone tell me how to sort it?

Well, it was actually AB tutor, our classroom control software. I've spoken about it on other posts - it allows teachers to set policy restrictions in place for internet access. Well, the teacher had 3 seperate policies in place before the class logged on. For some reason, these policies were blocking the applying of group policy at logon. I havene't figured out which of the three was doing it or perhpas it was the combination. But I'm also going to contact the authors of the software to ask their take on matters.

It's ok, I've just found out the problem we have had isn't related to this Patch. I can see what you mean about not needing it on the server. The server patch is if it is slow logging onto the server itself.

Can I just ask? Has any one applied the patch on a client but not on a server? We started applying the patch to xp sp2 worksations last night but I didn't apply it on the server because I didn't want it to restart at that point and chuck everyone out. However this morning, we have come across a problem where if a user doesn't have a profile already in documents and settings, they log on without group polices applying. I'm just wondering if the server needs the patch to apply as well?

Is there a log off script I can run to remove their local profile?

I have a policy set in our AB Tutor program which allows you to ban applications on the fly. The best thing about this is it kicks them out if the app if it is currently running. We have started using this as a quick and easy way for teachers to ban the internet. They just set the policy to ban iexplorer.exe - the key factor here is being able to stop it live, so it can be applied at any point through the lesson. Now then, pupils have found that they can open up their docs folder and press the Internet Home hotkey on the microsoft basic keyboard. Now they are able to access internet through explorer.exe rather than iexplorer.exe. The shell is set to 'classic' in Group Policy but I can't find anything to stop explorer shell to disable internet access. We can block internet at port level through AB but then they can access what is in the cache by looking at their recent history. Any ideas?
