  1. Thanks for that Cybernerd. I had tried to re-register all the necessary files manually but even that didn't work. Offline updates seems to be working now. Does it actually install the updates or is it just downloading them for manual install?
  2. Ok, so trying to update an older w2k laptop. Installed SP4 from file then tried to connect to Windows update via the start menu. Microsoft installed the newer version of their update software, then I got the regular 'Express' install or 'Custom' install options. I click on either one and after a short period of time watching the incredible green progress bar (which actually doesn't show the progress) I get an error message. 'Files required to use Microsoft Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer. To continue: o - Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended) o - Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve this problem' So I click on the recommended and it goes through downloading, then registering. All 100% complete. Then I get to the original update screen - Express or Custom. When I click on either of these, I'm back to the same error message. AAARRRHH :x If I choose to 'Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve this problem' it takes me to support website and I have to search the knowledge base for the problem. Of course, no matter what I search for I can't find an article with my symptoms. Any ideas?
  3. Get the most IT illiterate teacher you can find. Deck their printer in. Then get the candidate to troubleshoot over the phone with the teacher. Evil, I know, but very very practical and realistic!
  4. How the hell did funtastic computer smashing change into some tasteless jokes?
  5. You've had a long week. You really could do with venting your anger. Try this: http://www.thegn.com/playgame/flash_arcade/action_games/metele_al_ordenata.html

We filter anything with 'prox' in it now. This accounts for both plural versions ie proxys and proxies. Haven't had any complaints of legit sites not working yet.
  8. Ok, now I'm not going to get any work done watching this!
  9. We have started using Truancy Call but they also do this which we will try after christmas: http://www.callparents.com/
  10. Where do we find the 'goat cam' then?
  11. Have you tried this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300537
  12. I will try to run a reg cleaner over one of the PCs, but I will be surprised if it's that. The original PC we set up was from scratch, with no use at all other than installing the necessary apps. but will try the reg cleaner anyway.
  13. We run sysprep on the original before we ghosted it so we could change the ip addresses on first boot-up etc. What is newSID?
  14. Ever since we set up two new suites of PCs in september, we've been getting random application error messages at log off. These are occuring on every PC since we ghosted an image to the lot. This is what I've pulled from the application event log: I've also had this which may be related: Any ideas how to solve this?

    XXCOPY

Have tested XXCOPY for backup purposes and it works really well. But the free version coughs up several messages before it gets into the actual copying. Is that just how it is? It is no use whatsoever for scheduling it to run at night. The school would be happy to purchase 2 licenses @ $40 which is all I need, but don't want to do it with a credit card over the web. I was thinking of emailing them. Any ideas?
  23. As you say, redirect 'my pictures' (if possible) but how would you do this. It's not one of the folders available for redirection in group policy.
  24. Why oh why do they do it? Ok so they have an interest. Cars. An Xbox game. Fluffy bunnies. So they google it, find a site with loads of highres jpgs, then save them into their user folder. So far, I have found quotas to be inflexible and difficult to get the balance between those who need extra space and those who don't. Each year, I delete all the pics and then if any come back to me saying they need a particular image for work, I restore it if I still have it on backup. But it doesn't take two minutes for them to fill up their 'My Pictures' folder with unnecessary images again. How do you sort this problem out?
  25. We do all the ICT equipment in our school. Then other technicians cover their department areas, eg science and Design Tech. Then the caretaker is supposed to finish off the bits and bobs although he hasn't started yet because he doesn't have time. It is a big hassle as it is sooooo time consuming, and I just don't have the time in the day to do it. Plus you need to have kids and staff out of the way really. Don't have time to do it in hols either, usually big projects going on. So now I have started doing overtime on an enevening and they are paying time and a half so not too bad afterall. I must say though that you cannot do PAT testing unless you have been on a proper course and received a certificate to qualify you. That is the law. So as simple as it can be to do, don't do it if you haven't had the official training. Our college here in carlisle provided my training.
